President Donald Trump has said he wants to conduct a major investigation into voter fraud, but Louisiana Secretary of State Tom Schedler says in the bayou state there were no cases of irrergularities or allegations of fraud during the 2016 Presidential election cycle. Trump believes there are those who are registered in more than one state and in some cases dead people are registered to vote.

The American Lung Association’s annual State of Tobacco Control report finds Louisiana is failing in efforts to reduce tobacco use. An estimated 22-percent of Louisiana adults smoke. Regional Policy Director Ashley Lyerly (Liar-lee) says the report assigned F letter grades in the areas like tobacco taxes and access to cessation programs.

The report gave another F to the state when it comes to funding for prevention programs. Lyerly says Louisiana should be spending about 60 million dollars on tobacco prevention each year but total funding for this fiscal year is only 8 million dollars. She says the state also received an F grade when it comes to tobacco taxes, even though it recently increased to $1.08.

Louisiana received a B grade for the strength of smoke-free workplace laws. But Lyerly says they recommend the state increase the minimum age for the sale of tobacco products.

Louisiana isn’t seeing as many flu cases as we usually do this time of year. That’s according to the state’s flu bug expert, Dr. Frank Welch, who says right now, 4 out of every 100 doctor visits in the state is for the flu. He says there’s several reasons we’re seeing a slower flu season this year.

Welch says while the Deep South has seen few cases, other states are seeing an uptick. But he says we aren’t out of the woods yet. He anticipates cases will pick up, once the weather gets colder, which will happen this weekend.

Welch advises everyone to get their flu shots to avoid getting the flu and to avoid spreading it to others. He says there are plenty of ways for people to stay well this flu season.

The Baton Rouge Advocate reports that the Edwards administration will likely not increase aid to public schools when they present a budget to lawmakers for next fiscal year. But the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education would like to see a 35-million dollar increase in funding for K-12 schools. Funding for public schools has been relatively stagnant since 2009.

Louisiana Oil and Gas Association Acting President Gifford Briggs says President Donald Trump’s executive order giving the go-ahead to build two major pipeline projects is a huge step towards energy security. Briggs is also pleased that Mr. Trump plans to reduce 75% of regulations on the industry..:

Today was the first day of Senior Bowl practices in Mobile. There are four former Tigers there trying to impress NFL scouts, linebacker Duke Riley, wide receiver Travin Dural, center Ethan Pocic and defensive back Tre Davious White. Grambling wide receiver Chad Williams is also there.

And LSU has announced it’s annual spring game will be held April 22nd with spring practice beginning March 11th. A game time for the spring game has not been set.

In recuiting news…Jennings running back Travis Etienne says he’ll announce his signing decision on Thursday at 5 PM. LSU, Tennessee, Texas A-and-M and Clemson have been after the ball carrier.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees will suit up Sunday night and play in the Pro Bowl. He’ll replace Atlanta’s Matt Ryan, who can’t play in the all-star game, because he has to get ready for the Super Bowl. This will be Brees’ 10th Pro Bowl appearance.

It was an impressive win for the Pelicans last night as they rebounded from a bad loss to Brooklyn for their best win of the year, a 124-122 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. And the Pels did it without Anthony Davis, who didn’t play because of a right thigh contusion. Terrence Jones had 36 points to lead the way for New Orleans, while Jrue Holiday had 33. Holiday on the victory…

Former Angola Warden Burl Cain has responded to claims in a state legislative auditor’s report that said he may have illegally used public funds for personal reasons. One of the accusations is that prison workers performed work on his private home, while getting paid by the state. Cain says it’s not his job to fill out their time sheets properly….

Cain’s comments were made during a live interview on Talk 107.3 in Baton Rouge. Legislative auditor Daryl Purpera says he’s forwarded his findings to local and federal prosecutors.

The state’s unemployment rate is at 6-point-1 percent. That’s based on a data from the federal Bureal of Labor statistics who compiled job numbers for December. Another report shows Louisiana added 26-hundred private-sector jobs in December as total employment in the education and health care services has hit an all-time high.

Legislators will find out on Friday the Edwards administration proposal to eliminate a 304-million dollar midyear deficit. It’s expected that the governor will call for a special session and Lake Charles Representative Mark Abraham says he’s fine with that…

A family fight apparently prompted a 28-year-old Covington-area man to douse a home with gasoline which started a fire that killed him and critically injured his father.
