A Denham Springs contractor has been arrested after allegedly defrauding two Baton Rouge flood victims. BRPD Sgt. Don Coppola says 48-year-old Andrew Darian contacted two female victims, one of whom was 70-years-old, about doing work on their homes.

Coppola says Darian would even change his number after getting the money. He says unfortunately, we’ve seen similar cases of fraud by supposed contractors since the August flood. He says this adds an extra burden on the victims.

Coppola says Darian is charged with home improvement fraud, felony theft, misapplication of payment, and theft of assets of an aged person. He says it’s unclear if Darian has any other victims, but if you have been a victim of contractor fraud you should  contact authorities.

Jefferson Parish authorities found four people dead at an apartment complex in Metairie early this morning. Sheriff Newell Normand says when authorities arrived they found three people dead and a woman shot in the face, who was transported to a local hospital. He says as deputies were canvasing the scene, a nearby apartment had an open door…

Normand says they are working to identify the four victims. He says originally they were investigating a triple homicide and finding another body turns back the clock on the investigation.

Normand says three men and one woman were pronounced dead at the scene and the injured female is reported to be in stable condition. He says it’s too early in the investigation to speculate about what exactly happened.

After spending nine years as the leader of State Police, Superintendent Col. Mike Edmonson announces his plans to retire March 24th. The agency has been the center of controversy regarding questionable travel by four state troopers. Edmonson says he loves his job, but stepping down brings a sense of normalcy to the department.

Edmonson says he will work with Governor John Bel Edwards and his successor to make the transition as seamless as possible. He says he wouldn’t have done anything differently because problems are always going to arise.

LSP is under investigation by multiple agencies after four troopers made taxpayer funded overnight stops in Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon while heading to a training conference in San Diego. Political analyst Clancy Dubos the announcement shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Over a dozen members of State Police have also been subpoenaed as part of federal investigation into illegal campaign contributions involving the Louisiana State Troopers Association and its executive director. Dubos says Edmonson retirement is the best move for everyone involved.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu has decided not to go forward with his previous suggestion to close the doors of all bars in the Crescent City at 3 a.m. in an effort to increase safety. French Quarter Business League President Alex Fein says they’ve been against the idea from the get go and are glad that proposition has been taken off the table.

Fein says especially on Bourbon Street, a lot of bars are open past 3 a.m. and there was a concern it could negatively affect businesses. But he says their biggest problem with the proposed change was they didn’t want the world seeing the city in a different light…

Landrieu still plans on using 40 million dollars to tighten security in the city. Fein says they are encouraged by other recommendations the mayor has to make New Orleans a safer place.

In football scheduling news…LSU has reportedly added Utah State to the 2019 season.

The Monroe News Star reports head football coach Skip Holtz could receive an extension. Holtz has been the Bulldogs head coach since 2013 and the last three seasons he’s led Tech to victories in bowl games. Holtz will reportedly meet with Athletic Director Tommy McClelland in the offseason to discuss a new deal.

The LSU baseball team had an easy time beating Louisiana College 13-0 last night. Antoine Duplantis continues to swing a hot bat as he drove in three more runs. Freshman right-hander Zack Hess allowed just one hit in six innings of work. The Tigers host UNO tonight.

Also last night, Southeastern Louisiana stretched its winning streak to eight games as the Lions crushed South Alabama 12-4. Carson Crites, Taylor Schwaner and Derrick Mount each drove in two runs.

Houston ended McNeese State’s eight-game winning streak as the Cougars beat the Poks six to five. 14th ranked Ole Miss blanked Nicholls five to nothing. Louisiana Tech thumped Grambling 15-1. Marshall Boggs drove in four runs as hit a three-run homer in the fifth. Tonight, the Bulldogs host the Ragin Cajuns. ULM takes on Jackson State. Tulane is at Nicholls.

Governor John Bel Edwards has sent a letter to federal Congressional leaders urging them to keep Medicaid expansion as lawmakers debate replacing the current federal health care law . The governor’s spokesperson, Richard Carbo, says in addition to saving lives, the expansion is good for the state’s economy and budget.

Mount St. Mary’s press is called “Mount Mayhem.” But UNO has been one of the better teams in the country, when it comes to not turning the ball over.

The Pelicans are back in the Smoothie King Center tonight as they host Portland. The Trail Blazers have won nine of the last 11 games played between these two teams. New Orleans enters the contest five games out of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Saints announced today they’ve signed defensive end Alex Okafor to a one-year contract. Okafor spent the last four seasons with Arizona and racked up 13.5 sacks. And Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler is scheduled to visit with the Saints on Thursday. The 27-year-old is a restricted free agent, but there’s talk the Saints might work out another trade with New England to add one of the better cornerbacks in the league.

In other NFL news…former Dutchtown star running back Eddie Lacy has signed with Seattle. Lacy battled weight issues in Green Bay, but Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll doesn’t seem to mind. The Chiefs have signed former LSU defensive tackle Bennie Logan to a one-year deal. Logan made 51 starts during the past four seasons in Philadelphia. And the Browns have claimed ex Tiger wide reciever James Wright.

In baseball…LSU has a rare meeting with Louisiana College tonight at Box. Southeastern and McNeese look to keep their long winning streaks alive. The Lions have won seven in a row and they are at South Alabama, while the Pokes have won eight straight and they are at 24th ranked Houston.

There has been a large outbreak of mumps cases in Arkansas and we’re starting to see cases in Louisiana now. Medical Director of the state Immunization Program Dr. Frank Welch says they’ve been able to confirm at least six cases on the LSU campus. He says mumps is relatively mild but can cause some serious complications…

Welch says the U.S. used to see less than one thousand cases a year but there were over 5-thousand cases of the mumps in 2016. He says the disease is spread through saliva, so it’s important to wash your hands, cover your mouth when coughing and avoid sharing utensils.

LDH encourages everyone to receive two doses of the mumps vaccine which is 90-percent effective and the department has sent alerts to all doctors.  Welch says the outbreak in Arkansas is mostly in school aged children. He says even though the majority of mumps cases in Louisiana have been at LSU, they are also taking every measure to ensure young children are aware of the disease.

However, other employment sectors like construction and education and health services saw tremendous gains. The Lake Charles area in particular saw an increase of 5,600 jobs over the year. Scott says the primary reason for that growth is the industrial expansion.

Mount St. Mary’s is located in Maryland and they won the regular season and tournament titles in the Northeast Conference.

The Saints have reportedly signed edge rusher and outside linebacker Alex Okafor to a one year deal. He’s had 13.5 sacks during his four-year career in Arizona. And Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler will reportedly visit the Saints Thursday. He’s a restricted free-agent so New England can match the Saints offer.

Sixth ranked LSU looks for its fourth straight win when they host Louisiana College tonight at 6:30. This game was added to the schedule last week to make up for last week’s rain out against San Diego. Tiger second baseman Cole Freeman has been named SEC Player of the week and he’s hitting .482 on the season.

Elsewhere…Southeastern Louisiana has won seven straight and they visit South Alabama tonight. McNeese State has won eight in a row and the Pokes are at 24th ranked Houston tonight. Nicholls is at 30th ranked Ole Miss and Louisiana Tech, who is ranked 24th in the coaches poll, hosts Grambling State tonight at J-C Love Field.

In basketball…the Pelicans host Portland tonight, the LSU Lady Tigers are an eight-seed in the NCAA Tournament and will face Cal on Saturday night from Waco, Texas. Louisiana Tech and Tulane women’s basketball teams are in the WNIT. The Lady Techsters will play SMU in Dallas on Friday and the Lady Green Wave will host Texas-Arlington Thursday at 7 PM.

The National Highway Safety Administration finds distracted driving is the cause for 20-percent of crashes in the state.

Day two of jury selection is underway in the murder trial of Derek Stafford. He’s the law enforcement officer from Marksville accues of killing a six-year-old autistic boy during a traffic stop in November of 2015. So far six tentative jurors have been selected and attorneys have to agree on eight more.
