Officials say they will not press charges against a Vermilion Parish middle school teacher who was removed and then handcuffed after she spoke out during a school board meeting last night. English teacher Deyshia Hargrave opposed a pay raise for the superintendent. After asking several questions, Hargrave was led out by a marshal.

Multiple reports say Steve Ensminger will be named LSU’s new offensive coordinator. Ensminger served as an interim offensive coordinator eight games last season after the firing of Les Miles. He’s served as tight ends coach at LSU the last several years.

After beating the Pistons 112 to 109 last night, New Orleans heads to Memphis to take on the Grizzlies tomorrow night. Anthony Davis had 30 points in last night’s win over Detroit, but left in the second half with an ankle injury. Coach Alvin Gentry said today it’s doubhtful A-D will play tomorrow night.

In college hoops last night, Jackson State went to Baton Rouge and edged Southern 65-61 despite 22 points from Jared Sam, while Grambling beat Alcorn State 72-61. Southern and Grambling are 1-3 in league play.

Tonight, Tulane takes on Memphis at 6 PM. The Green Wave have won four of their last five.

In college baseball…Perfect Game announced it’s preseason All-American team today and Southeastern Louisiana third baseman Taylor Schwaner and LSU center fielder Zach Watson landed on the third-team.

Tiger Rag Magazine reports catcher Mason Doolittle has left the LSU baseball program. He was expected to compete for a starting role, but Coach Paul Mainieri says Hunter Feduccia has won that job.

After failing last year to raise Louisiana’s gas tax for road improvements, Baton Rouge Representative Steve Carter has a different idea this year. He plans to file a constitutional amendment that would would eventually allow a region of the state to decide if they want a higher gas tax for their area. Carter says there’s not enough support for a statewide gas tax increase…

In the last year’s bill, Carter proposed a 17-cent gas tax increase would have paid for a 15-billion-dollar backlog of projects.  Carter says since not all roads and bridges across Louisiana need maintenance, this amendment would allow voters a chance to say if they felt a gas tax increase was necessary in their area…

Carter says worsening road congestion is not only is a problem for drivers, but can hurt Louisiana’s economy.  He cites the heavy traffic in his Baton Rouge area district as a key issue that needs to be solved in the state…

The state hasn’t raised the gas tax since 1990.  Drivers pay 38-point-four cents per gallon, including 20-cents in state taxes.

NFIB Index of Small Business Optimism is at an all-time high as we enter 2018. The yearly index is a barometer for the general mood of small business owners across the US. A sharp rise in optimism was logged after the 2016 election, and Louisiana NFIB Director Dawn Starns says a lot of that has to do with the Trump administration’s promise of regulatory rollback and tax cuts…

Starns says a big factor was the judicial defeat of a Labor Department overtime rule. The rule would have required businesses to pay time and a half on overtime hours to roughly 4.6 million workers earning under $47,476 a year, who work more than forty hours a week. She says that was a boon for small businesses…

While optimism is high, Starns says businesses face one potential roadblock: finding qualified workers. She says it could hold back the Louisiana economy…

One teenager is dead and two adults are wounded after an apparent home invasion in Tallulah. 17-year-old Robert Taylor, was found deceased after Madison Parish deputies arrived on the scene Sunday night. 21-year-old Corey McGowan was injured and taken into custody last night. Investigator Brandon Wiltcher says the shootout began after Taylor and McGowan knocked at the homeowner’s door.

Afterward the homeowner opened the door, Wiltcher says the suspects allegedly forced their way into the house…

McGowan is being held without bond at the Madison Parish Correctional Facility, and is charged with home invasion, armed robbery, and attempted first degree murder.

Scalise lists over 100 businesses on his House Majority Whip website that have given bonuses, pay raises or made new investments as a result of the federal tax overhaul. Nick Saban won his sixth national championship last night as Alabama rallied to beat Georgia 26-23 in overtime. Saban’s decision to bench an ineffective Jalen Hurts for Tua Tagovailoa paid off as the freshman from Hawaii threw three touchdown passes, including the game winner to Devonta Smith, a former standout at Amite High School.

LSU is reportedly close to naming Steve Ensminger as the Tigers new offensive coordinator. Ensminger has been the Tigers tight ends coach for a number of years and served as interim offensive coordinator in 2016 after Les Miles and Cam Cameron were fired. LSU averaged 41 points a game in six victories with Ensminger calling plays, but didn’t do much in losses versus to Alabama and Florida.

And former LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis has found another job in the SEC. Arkansas has hired Chavis, after he failed to get Texas A-and-M’s defense among the best in the SEC the last two seasons.

The Saints coaching staff is developing a game plan to beat the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. The two teams met in the regular season opener, Minnesota won 29-19. Head Sean Payton says there are many reasons why the Vikings finished with the second best record in the NFC…

The Saints defense gave up 470 yards in that first meeting. And Minnesota has a different quarterback. Case Keenum has led Minnesota to a 13-3 record.

In the NBA last night, the Pelicans edged the Pistons 112 to 109. Anthony Davis had 30 points, before leaving the game in the third quarter, because of an ankle injury. New Orleans is at Memphis tomorrow.

And LSU has moved up about 40 spots in the RPI rankings after beating Texas A-and-M on Saturday. The Tigers visit Arkansas tomorrow.

Carnival season means king cake season, and this year’s compressed schedule, coupled with the Saints in the playoffs means this tradition is kicking into overdrive. Haydel’s Bakery’s Dave Haydel says the last time the Saints made the Super Bowl, black and gold king cakes flew off the shelves…

King cakes can be found at some locations year long, but there’s a particular yearning for them during Mardi Gras season. Haydel says this year’s particularly short season is keeping bakers busy…

The Madison Parish Sheriff’s Office says one person was killed another two were injured in what authorities believe was a home invasion in Tallulah. Investigator Brandon Wiltcher says someone allegedly tried to break in to an apartment at Country Meadows…:

Governor John Bel Edwards met with House Speaker Taylor Barras again today to discuss solutions to a looming one-billion dollar budget deficit. Edwards would like to call a special session in February to pass a revenue-neutral tax plan to address the fiscal cliff. In the meantime, the governor is working on proposing a budget that reflects a billion dollars in cuts, if he can’t reach an agreement with legislators on a tax plan…

Edwards says he’ll only call a special session in February, if there’s an agreement in principle with legislative leaders on a tax reform plan to address the fiscal cliff.  He says he is willing to extend a January 19th deadline for both sides to unite on plan…

Barras told the Associated Press that Republican lawmakers are still waiting on more specifics from the governor on how the state would change the state’s tax code to cover up the billion dollar deficit. Edwards says G-O-P legislators know the options, but they are hesitant to support anything…
