A suspect has died as a result of another officer-involved shooting in Baton Rouge. That’s according to State Trooper Bryan Lee, who says Louisiana State Police is investigating the incident. He says the deadly encounter began when Baton Rouge Police conducted a traffic stop just before midnight.

The suspect has been identified as 35-year-old Jordan Frazier. Lee says investigators are working to establish the timeline of events that led to the death of the suspect.

New Orleans Congressman and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise is recovering from a gunshot wound to the hip, as he underwent surgery this morning. Scalise was shot at the practice for the Congressional Baseball Game in Alexandria, Va. US Senator John Kennedy says he wishes he understood why bad things happen to good people. He says he feels sad and mad that something like this happened.

The shooter has been identified as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of Illinois, and it’s been reported he has ties to several anti-Republican online groups. Two police officers and a congressional aide were also wounded in the shooting.

Scalise is being treated at MedStar Washington Hospital. The hospital tweeted that Scalise remains in critical condition. St. Landry Parish Congressman Clay Higgins says he is hopeful his colleague will make a full and speedy recovery.

President Trump confirmed the suspect has died as a result of his injuries. Higgins says although he would have liked for him to be prosecuted, that’s just fine with him. He is thankful the security detail responded as quickly and effectively as they did.

President Donald Trump addressed the public after the attack this morning at a baseball practice that left multiple people injured, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, of Jefferson Parish. Among the other injured are two police officers, a staffer, and lobbyist. Trump commended the actions of the officers who stepped in to stop this brutal and deliberate attack.

The state Department of Transportation announces plans to widen Interstate 10 from four to six lanes in East Baton Rouge and Ascension Parishes. The project also includes the replacement of the LA 42 overpass. DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson says construction is slated to begin in early 2018.

Wilson says DOTD will widen the bridge over Highland, and they’ll widen the stretch all the way to Highway 73 to allow traffic to pass the busy exit. He says this will help alleviate congestion that happens during morning and afternoon commutes.

The $72 million project is funded through a combination of state and federal funds. Wilson says they are using repurposed earmarks from the federal FASTLANE grant, along with a state match. He reminds drivers this is a onetime opportunity.

Although increasing slightly nationally, gas prices are dropping in 30 states and Louisiana is one of those seeing a decline in prices at the pump. That’s according to AAA spokesperson Don Redman, who says prices are slightly lower than at this time last year.

The statewide average of $2.14 a gallon is well below the forecast for June of $2.40 a gallon. Redman says how low it will go is hard to predict. He says we’re seeing higher demand like we typically do for summer, but refineries have kept up with the demand.

Redman says he expects the statewide average to remain above $2 a gallon throughout the summer. He says the price of gas is about 20 cents cheaper in Louisiana than the national average. He says they’re already seeing drivers take advantage of lower prices at the pump.

The Department of Children and Family Services encourages Louisiana residents to pre-register for disaster food stamps in preparation for hurricane season. Kim Matherne with DCFS says pre-registering gets your information in the system and makes things move smoother following a disaster.

Matherne says the DSNAP program offers assistance to people who need help purchasing groceries after a disaster. She says when pre-registering, families will need the names, dates of birth, and social security numbers of all household members. She says workers will ask for more information at the DSNAP site in the event of a hurricane.

Matherne says in the event of a disaster, people should go to the DSNAP site in their parish, which will be listed on the DCFS website. She says people can pre-register at dcfs.la.gov or call 1-888-LA-HELP-U. She says there are some people who do not need to register.

The House Appropriations Committee has approved a 28-billion dollar budget plan that spends more than what they proposed in the regular session, but still less than what the Senate and governor wanted. LSU’s double play combination of Kramer Robertson and Cole Freeman were drafted in the fourth round of today’s Major League Baseball draft. The St. Louis Cardinals selected Robertson, while the Washington Nationals took Freeman.

In the 5th round, Southeastern Louisiana pitcher Mac Sceroler was drafted in the fifth round by the Cleveland Indians. In the third round, LSU signee and former West Monroe star Jacob Pearson was selected by the Angels.

At Saints minicamp, Head Coach Sean Payton said they are still waiting for that third opinion from a medical professional regarding defensive tackle Nick Fairley’s heart condition. You can bet that the LSU baseball players slept late into the morning or early afternoon after a long day but gratifying day at the ballpark. The Tigers dogpiled at Alex Box Stadium just after 1:30 this morning following their 14-4 win over Mississippi State to complete a sweep of the Bulldogs.

The Saints have reportedly signed a back up quarterback. Ryan Nassib will compete with Garrett Grayson for the third string Q-B duties behind Chase Daniel and Drew Brees. Nassib spent the past four seasons with the Giants and he threw just 10 passes in the regular season during that time.

Fans can attend the Saints three-day minicamp that begins tomorrow at the team’s training facility in Metairie. Practices will run from 11 AM to 1:20 and they’ll be open to the public weather permitting.

The man charged in the shooting death of former NFL player Joe McKnight will have his trial begin on August seventh. Ronald Gasser has pleaded not guilty to a second-degree murder charge. Authorities say road rage led tot he shooting of the former Louisiana prep star. Gasser’s attorney says the shooting was a justifiable homicide.

The major league baseball draft begins tonight. LSU starting pitcher Alex Lange is expected to be a late first round selection. There’s also a chance right fielder Greg Deichmann could be drafted after the first round is completed.
