This year’s post special session blame game is revving up after the legislature failed to solve the fiscal cliff. Jeff Palermo has the story.

The state legislature went home after spending 15 days in a special session and failing to find a solution for the one billion dollar fiscal cliff. Political analyst Clancy Dubos says legislators spent a lot of taxpayer money for very little return.

The session is expected to cost the state nearly a million dollars, 50-to-60-thousand dollars a day.

Despite early reports of House leadership and the governor having a framework for a deal, negotiations collapsed once the session started. DuBos says the same partisan divides that tanked the February special session still exist going forward.

Cut 5  (11)  “of uncertainty.”

No revenue bills will be heard in the upcoming regular session.

DuBos says the legislative gridlock could hurt some lawmakers chances at re-election….

The LSU System has warned that waiting until June to fix the cliff will have negative consequences on the 2018-2019 school year.

Baton Rouge Representative Edmond Jordan is seeking to introduce a bill that would legalize the recreational use of marijuana and set up a way to tax the sale of cannabis. Jordan says this legislation could help with the state’s constant budget deficits…

Colorado, the first state to legalize marijuana, pulled in nearly 200-million-dollars in taxes, while Washington State is expected to bring in over 700-million-dollars between 2017 and 2019.  California could make upwards of 1.4-billion-dollars by 2021.  Jordan proposes a tax rate similar to cigarettes, which is $1.08 per pack.  Jordan says if Louisiana were to legalize pot, it wouldn’t give citizens the right to smoke it whenever they want to

Baton Rouge and New Orleans recently approved ordinances that decrease the penalties for possession of small amounts of marijuana. He says making it legal statewide is the next obvious step…

Jordan stresses this bill only would address marijuana and not other illegal drugs.

Louisiana drivers are getting a bit of a break with falling gas prices over the last few weeks. The statewide average for regular unleaded gas is $2.33 a gallon, but Triple A’s Don Redman says don’t get too comfortable with these lower prices as we move into the warmer months…

Earlier this year, the projection was for $3.00 a gallon in Louisiana, but Redman says the increase won’t be as much as first thought…

Redman says drivers aren’t concerned as long as gas stays below $2.75 a gallon, which will translate to a lot of traveling this year…

Leaders from both sides are pointing fingers after the special session crashed and burned after 15 days of failed negotiations, leaving the state with no certain path to solving the one billion dollar fiscal cliff. Republican Representative Cameron Henry says Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards was unable to rally his side.

Henry says the governor failed to communicate exactly what he wanted, or how large of a shortfall that needed to be made up…

But Edwards is placing the blame on House Speaker Taylor Barras.

Edwards is accusing Barras of reneging on a deal that was cut before the special session started.

The state is facing a billion dollar shortfall on July 1st, because of temporary sales taxes approved in 2016 are set to expire on June 30th. Edwards says the House has failed to provide a long term solution to Louisiana’s fiscal situation…

The special session came to an end with legislators unable to come to an agreement on how to generate revenues to address a looming one-billion dollar shortfall. The special session must end by midnight Wednesday night, but Jonesboro Representative Jack McFarland says it’s disappointing they couldn’t come to an agreement on a plan to address the fiscal cliff…

This is the 15th day of the special session and each state cost Louisiana 50 to 60-thousand dollars a day.

The rising Mississippi River has led to a recommendation by the U-S Army Corps of Engineers to open the Bonnet Carre Spillway to take the pressure off the New Orleans levee system. The spillway diverts river water into Lake Ponchartrain and Colonel Michael Clancy says it could see an extended tour of duty….

Rayne Police say they plan on arresting several suspects involved in the shooting of an 11-year-old girl. The child was shot in the leg and was treated and released at a local hospital. Authorities say the girl was an innocent bystander in a gunfight involving multiple people on Sunday afternoon.

The NFL Network reports the Seahawks are not expected to re-sign tight end Jimmy Graham before free agency starts on March 14th. A source says the Saints would have some interest in bringing Graham back to New Orleans. The 31-year-old caught 10 touchdown passes this past season.

LSU’s Zack Hess has been named National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Magazine. Hess struck out a career-high 13 in LSU’s victory over Toledo on Friday.

Louisiana Tech’s Matt Miller has been named as the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week. Miller pitched seven strong innings and gave up just one unearned run on five hits in the Bulldogs four to two victory over nationally ranked Texas A-and-M.

The Pelicans Anthony Davis has been named the Western Conference Player of the Week. A-D averaged 34 points a game last week as New Orleans is currently riding an eight-game winning streak, which has moved them into fourth place in the Western Conference Standings. New Orleans faces the Los Angeles Clippers tomorrow night.

Nicholls Richie Riley has been named the Southland Conference Coach of the Year. The Colonels were picked to finish 10th in the league this season, but Nicholls greatly surpassed all expectations by finishing with a 15-3 conference mark and sharing the Southland title with Southeastern Louisiana.

The Lions claimed a share of the Southland championship by beating the Colonels on Saturday. S-L-U faced adversity two weeks ago, when a couple of their players were involved in a shooting on campus. James Currington was wounded and Jabbar Singleton was arrested for allegedly firing a warning shot. Ladner says team chemistry helped them get past that rough patch…

Southeastern Louisiana will be the top seed in the Southland tournment, while Nicholls is the second seed. They will not play until Friday.

After 12 seasons, Dave Simmons is out as head coach at McNeese State. The Cowboys missed the Southland Conference Tournament after finishing with a 8-10 league mark.

But Republican House Speaker Taylor Barras says the governor was unwilling to pass any spending reduction measures and was insistent on just tax increases to replace the expiring sales taxes.

Parts of Louisiana could see some strong thunderstorms as a cold front invades the bayou. State Climatologist Barry Keim says expect the weather to take a turn this afternoon.

The strong storms will not reach south Louisiana until late tonight or early tomorrow morning.

The Corps of Engineers is recommending opening the Bonnet Carre Spillway just outside of New Orleans this Thursday as Mississippi River levels are expected to steadily rise after several weeks of intense rains in the Midwest. Colonel Michael Clancy says if the spillway is not opened, New Orleans could get swamped.

The Bonnet Carre is expected to be operated at half capacity.

Cameron Sheriff Ron Johnson says investigators have determined a severed head found last week along Highway 27 is that of a woman between the ages of 25 and 40 years old. They also say there was no apparent trauma to the skull. It appears there was a lot of dental work that had been performed and Johnson hopes it will be easy for forensics at the LSU FACES lab to identify the victim through dental records…

A man wanted for second-degree murder out of Iberia Parish has been arrested in Houston. Authorities say the U-S Marshal’s Violent Offender Task Force apprehended Akeam Daniels. He’s accused of fatally shooting 29-year-old Courtland Hall, who was dating the mother of his child. The incident resulted in an Ambert Alert involving their two month old child, but the infant was found unharmed.

In a statement, Republican House Speaker Taylor Barras blames the governor for failing to reach a compromise. Barras says Edwards’ solution was to raise 994-million dollars in taxes, instead of using a combination of spending reform measures and tax increases. The governor plans to have a press conference 30 minutes after the House adjourns later today.

The Cameron Parish Sheriff’s office released more information today on the severed head that was found on Highway 27, south of Hackberry. Initial forensics testing has determined it’ s a woman between the ages of 25 and 40 years old. The victim also had extensive dental work done. Sheriff Ron Johnson says they hope the LSU FACES lab can provide more clues…

Site Selection magazine ranks Louisiana eighth on a per capita basis, among states with the most new and expanded facilities in 2017. It’s the ninth consecutive year Louisiana has landed in the top 10.

Southeastern Louisiana has the top seed in this week’s Southland Conference Tournament in Katy, Texas after beating Nicholls for a second time this season on Saturday. Coach Jay Ladner’s team clinched a share of the Southland title with that win, but now the goal is to win the conference tourney

The Pelicans won their eighth straight last night as Jrue Holiday had 30 points in a 126-109 win over Dallas. New Orleans has moved up to fourth place in the Western Conference. They continue their four-game road trip on Tuesday in Los Angeles against the Clippers.

LSU football has landed two verbal commitments from Mississippi for its class of 2019. The two players are defensive end Jaren Handy from New Augusta and inside linebacker Zach Edwards from Starkville. Both players were on campus this past weekend. According to the 24-7 composite rankings, LSU has the third highest rated 2019 recruiting class with eight verbal commitments.

LSU baseball got strong pitching all weekend and have a three-game winning streak after beating Southeastern Louisiana four to two yesterday. Right-hander AJ Labas made his first collegiate start and pitched two scoreless innings.

It was also a good weekend for Louisiana Tech as they beat Texas A-and-M and Cal before losing to Baylor in the Frisco Classic.

The Pelicans won their eighth straight last night as they easily beat the lowly Dallas Mavericks 126-109 last night. Jrue (Drew) Holiday led the way with 30 points. Nikola Mirotic (KNEE-coal-uh Mir-oh-tich) broke out of a mini shooting slump and had 25 points. Anthony Davis couldn’t knock down any outside shots, but still had 23 points and 13 rebounds. New Orleans heads to L-A, where they’ll play the Clippers on Tuesday night.

In college baseball…LSU is on a three-game winning streak after beating Southeastern Louisiana four to two yesterday. Antoine Duplantis and Beau Jordan homered and Ma’Khail Hilliard threw four shutout innings of relief for his third win on the young year. LSU hosts Southern tomorrow night.

Baylor beat Louisiana Tech six to one, Kentucky clobbered the Cajuns 10-4, ULM swept Southern Illinois, Tulane crushed Cal State Fullerton 9-3, 16th ranked Southern Miss thumped Nicholls 20-4.
