Governor Edwards told legislators he knows of a student who is considering Alabama instead of LSU, because of uncertainity with TOPS funding.

LSU President F King Alexander was a guest this morning on Talk Louisiana with Jim Engster. Alexander was asked about the role the greek system plays on campus in wake of the suspected hazing death of Maxwell Gruver. Alexander says the culture of tradition runs deep in the Greek system and he says there is no reason for them to be hazing…

Lawmakers return to the capitol today to begin the regular session, just days after the special session failed to find a resolution for a one-billion-dollar budget shortfall. LAPolitics-dot-com Publisher Jeremy Alford says the backbiting and harsh words slung around between legislators will have an impact. Alford says they need to work together to consider over 1,000 bills for this session…

Teacher tenure will also be discussed in the regular session. Currently, teachers must be rated “highly efficient” for five of six years to qualify. The bill would lower the requirement to “effective: proficient”. West Monroe Representative Frank Hoffman says only 20 percent of teachers in a given year qualify for “highly efficient” status. He says his bill makes the requirements for tenure more reasonable.

New Orleans police say they arrested a 20-year-old man who allegedly threatened to shoot several people at UNO. The threat forced the university to cancel classes up until 5 PM today. The suspect has been identified as Nicholas Heard and he lives on campus. He allegedly made threats against UNO to two other students.

No schools from Louisiana in the NCAA Tournament, but LSU will play the Ragin Cajuns from Lafayette in the N-I-T on Wednesday night at 6 PM in the Maravich Center. The Tigers have not lost to the Cajuns since 1944. Southeastern Louisiana will play Tuesday night versus St. Mary’s at 9 PM.

And LSU baseball crushed Hawaii 14-1 as freshman hurler Ma’Khail Hilliard delivered another outstanding performance.

After winning 10 in a row, the Pelicans have now lost two straight. Utah came into the Smoothie King Center yesterday and beat the Pels 116 to 99. During the 10 game winning streak, New Orleans was averaging about 125 points a game, but in the last two, they’ve failed to score 100. Head Coach Alvin Gentry….

The regular session kicks off today, and Governor John Bel Edwards is hoping the legislature gets more accomplished than the special session that ended without a clear solution to the fiscal cliff. The special session was notable for its stark partisan divides, which Edwards says were the worst he’s seen in a decade.

Legislators are not allowed to address revenue issues in this regular session, so the fiscal cliff will have to wait for another special session to be called afterwards.

Despite the tension, Edwards says he’s optimistic that the legislature will put aside their differences and come together for a productive regular session.

Edwards says he and House Speaker Taylor Barras had the framework for a fiscal cliff deal in place, only to see the speaker back away from the plan early into the special session. Edwards says going forward, legislators need to place more trust in each other’s good intentions.

To kick off the regular session, the governor released his legislative agenda to advance the well-being of Louisiana children and seniors, that includes legislation addressing teacher tenure, and abuse of individuals with infirmities.

The regular session begins today less than a week after the special session crashed and burned. Fiscal cliff negotiations will be put on hold while a slew of other issues take center stage. There are several gun control bills filed. But Council for a Better Louisiana President Barry Erwin doesn’t see any of the measures to restrict who can purchase an assault rifle passing.

18 states raised their minimum wage this year, and a few major companies are following suite. Erwin says while the national landscape is tilting in favor of higher wages, he doesn’t see it happening in Louisiana.

Substantial changes to the state retirement system have been considered, but ultimately scrapped in past session, but Erwin says he sees support building for a fundamental overhaul of how new hired state employees receive their benefits.

One of the bills included is West Monroe Representative Frank Hoffman’s proposal to reduce the requirements necessary for public school teachers to obtain tenure. Hoffman says the current requirements are unfair to educators.

Hoffman says this is the kind of legislation that will make sure Louisiana can attract and retain quality instructors.

Hoffman is also proposing a bill that would alter the way the teacher evaluation system is weighed.

With the onset of spring comes seasonal allergies and this year could be a very long season. For those who suffer from hay fever, it spells many weeks of sniffing, sneezing, watery eyes and post nasal drainage. Physician Dr. Peter Boggs says the allergy season started early due to record breaking warmth in February. But there is still a lot of pollen to go around…

The LSU Baseball team dropped its series opener with Hawaii as the Rainbow Warriors hit three home runs in a 4-2 victory over the Tigers. LSU couldn’t buy a hit with runners in scoring position as they were 1-for-14 in those situations. The Tigers will look to even up the series tonight with game two of the series at 6:30.

Nick Lee struck out 10 in eight innings as the Ragin Cajuns defeated South Alabama two to one.

In the Southland, Central Arkansas crushed McNeese six to one, Nicholls nipped Northwestern State five to four and Southeastern Louisiana outscored UNO seven to six. Drew Avans had three hits and drove in two.

The Southeastern Louisiana men’s basketball team is one win away from an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament after beating Sam Houston State 89-79. The top-seeded Lions will play in Stephen F Austin in the Southland Tournament championship tonight. The Lumberjacks eliminated Nicholls with a 78-66 victory.

 

The Pelicans 10-game winning streak ended last night with a 116-97 loss to the Washington Wizards. Anthony Davis didn’t play for New Orleans as he sat with a sprained ankle. With Davis on the bench, the Wizards dominated the glass and had 18 second-chance points.

The Ragin Cajuns basketball team is in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Tournament. UL Lafayette thumped Texas State 80-54 last night and they’ll play UT Arlington at 11:30 this morning in New Orleans. Georgia Southern eliminated ULM as the Panthers beat the Warhawks 63-55.

At the boys state tournament….it was a big night for Acadiana, as Lafayette Christian, Carencro (Care-in-crow) and St. Thomas More each won state championships. Summerfield won its seventh state title. Today, Peabody looks to go back-to-back as the 3A champs as the Warhorses face Madison Prep.

And in the NFL, the Cleveland Browns completed three big trades and in one of the deals they acquired former LSU star Jarvis Landry from Miami for two draft picks.

It’s a short stay in St. Louis for the LSU men’s basketball team as they were bounced out of the SEC tournament by Mississippi State after one game. The Bulldogs held on for an 80-77 win over the Tigers. State built a 19 point lead as they hit a season high 10 three-pointers. But LSU got back into the game thanks to Tremont Waters 28 points and six assists. The loss drops LSU’s record to 17-14 and they’ll find out on Sunday night if that’s good enough to get in the NIT.

Louisiana Tech’s season is done after a 62-58 loss in the Conference USA Tournament. Temple topped Tulane 82-77 to end the Green Wave’s season. Sam Houston State eliminated UNO from the Southland Tournament 85-63.

Anthony Davis is listed doubtful for tonight’s game against Washington at the Smoothie King Center. A-D rolled his ankle in Wednesday’s win over Sacramento. The Pels go after their 11th straight win tonight. Tip off is at 7 PM.

LSU hosts Hawaii for a weekend series beginning tonight at Alex Box Stadium. It’s the final non-conference series for the Tigers, before they begin SEC play next weekend versus Missouri. Coach Paul Mainieri says his team needs to tighten up in the field, defense cost them the ball game versus UL Lafayette on Wednesday

LSU takes on Mississippi State tonight in the SEC Tournament. The Tigers are 17-13 and a win could at least secure a home game in the N-I-T next week. Coach Will Wade says his players want this season to go as long as it can possibly go….

A bill has been filed in the regular session to legalize sports betting in Louisiana. The U-S Supreme Court could soon issue a ruling that legalizes sports betting across the country. New Roads Representative Major Thibaut says several other states are preparing to allow sports betting and he believes Louisiana should be prepared to regulate it too…

Under Thibaut’s bill, sports betting parlors would be allowed at the state’s four horse racing tracks in New Orleans, Vinton, Opelousas and Bossier City.

The Pelicans won their tenth straight game last night as they defeated Sacramento 114 to 101. Anthony Davis left the game in the third quarter after rolling his ankle. X-rays taken were negative. A-D was expected to undergo an MRI today. New Orleans hosts the Wizards tomorrow night.

12 state championships in high school boys basketball will be awarded starting tomorrow. At noon, the Class C title will pit Summerfield versus Simpson and the 1-A title game should be a good one too…Delhi versus White Castle.
