The St. Tammany Parish Coroner has ruled the death of the fire chief’s wife in July, as a homicide. Michelle Southern reports…:

Authorities say they arrested the man shown in a video punching out a student on the LSU Parade Grounds before last Saturday’s football game.  He’s been identified as 18 year old Casen Maggio of Prairieville and he been charged with aggravated battery.  The official report says several bones in the student’s face were broken.

A homeowner shot and killed an alleged intruder in LaPlace last night. St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff Mike Tregre says the homeowner told detectives he heard voices in his yard and went to investigate. Tregre says when he opened the back door, he was face-to-face with the intruder.

The entire Shreveport City Council voted no to a multi-million dollar project to build a sports complex and downtown arena. Councilman Oliver Jenkins says they would like to present this project to the public in a different light because many people didn’t know the project could bring in a major G-league basketball team…:

Cutting down on penalties is a big key as the Tigers lead the SEC after two games as they’ve been flagged 21 times. Today on the SEC teleconference, Head Coach Ed Orgeron said he doubts that defensive end Rashard Lawrence will be able to play this Saturday, but Arden Key should start. The All-American missed his the first two games of the season as he continued to recover from shoulder surgery.

First year LSU basketball coach Will Wade continues to recruit very well. Power forward Naz Reid from New Jersey announced via twitter that he’s committed to LSU after taking an unofficial visit lat week. Reid is listed as the 18th best player in the nation on the ESPN 100 list.

This Sunday the Saints will take on the Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots. Starting right tackle Zach Strief is not expected to play after he reportedly suffered an MCL Sprain in the loss to Minnesota. New Orleans has signed veteran tackle Byrce Harris, who has been cut and brought back several times, but now looks like he has a permanent spot on this team for the next month.

The New Orleans Pelicans have released a statement after the Shreveport City Council rejected a proposal to begin the process of getting funds together to build a 30-million dollar sports complex that would be the home to the Pelicans minor league basketball team. The Pels statement says they are focused on finding a location for their G League team and that’s their sole focus and the other development plans for that area are not part of their proposal.

U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy is a co-author of the latest effort by Republicans to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act.  Senators Lindsey Graham, Dean Heller and Ron Johnson are co-authors of the bill.  Graham says their approach of block grant funding to the states gives the power back to patients.

Last night a LaPlace homeowner shot and killed an alleged intruder. St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff Mike Tregre says the homeowner told detectives he heard voices in his yard.  Tregre says when the opened the back door, he was face-to-face with the intruder.  No charges have been filed against the homeowner and the whole episode was captured on the home’s video surveillance camera…

St Tammany parish coroner ruled the death of Fire Chief Stephen Krentel’s wife, Nanette Krental as a homicide from a gunshot wound.  Her body was found in the couple’s home which was burned to the ground.  Coroner Charles Preston says, following an initial autopsy, the remains were sent to the LSU FACES Lab…:

But the St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office said in a media advisory that it does not necessarily support the coroner’s conclusion.  The sheriff will provide an update on the investigation during a news conference tomorrow.

Cassidy says this proposal takes Washington out of the decision so that each state receives an annual block grant to determine how to help individuals pay for health care….

St Martin Parish Sheriff’s office has a murder investigation underway with a brother and sister in custody in connection with pregnant woman. The victim, Ashley Nicole Meche, was found dead yesterday. Major Ginny Higgins says two people wanted for questioning are Mark Trimble and Toni Trimble.  She says authorities are looking into what happened to the 24 year old woman.

The siblings are not yet charged but the investigation continues.

 

House Speaker Taylor Barras has told the Associated Press he believes the House can come up with a plan by January to address the loss of one-billion dollars in tax revenue that expires next summer. Barras says if there’s enough agreement, a special session could be held early next year. There’s been a stalemate between the House and the governor on how to address the fiscal cliff.

 

The Shreveport City Council has rejected the mayor’s proposal to build a sports complex in the downtown area. The vote was unanimous. Councilman Oliver Jenkins says 30 million of the city’s dollars would be used along with 139 million in private finances.  He says they would like to present this project to the public in a different light, because many didn’t know it could bring in a minor league basketball team.

Baton Rouge Police are seeking the principal of Laurel Oaks Charter School after he allegedly locked a five-year-old student in a closet as a form of punishment. Principal Shamsid-Deen is wanted on counts of cruelty to a juvenile. According to the warrant, two teachers found the child after hearing her screaming and crying inside a closet in the cafeteria. The girl told detectives the principal put her in the closet, because she was “bad.”

Cajuns head coach Mark Hudspeth is not sure about kicker Stevie Artigue’s availability for Saturday’s road game at Texas A-and-M. Artigue has a strained muscle in his leg and only handled two of the kickoffs in the loss to Tulsa.

Conference play begins this Saturday for Northwestern State and Southeastern. The Lions are at Central Arkansas and the Demons host Lamar.

And LSU has received a commitment from five-star big man Naz Reid from New Jersey. He’s six-foot-ten, 240 pounds.

Louisiana’s Congressional delegation is working to bring a Shreveport man back to the United States. Zachary Wilson was arrested in Guatemala following a church mission, when bullets were found in his luggage. U.S. Representative Mike Johnson says they respect the rule of law but the charges brought against Wilson are not justified….

The death of a fire chief’s wife in a Lacombe house fire has been ruled a homicide. That’s from the St. Tammany Parish coroner who says after three autopsies on the remains of Nanette Krentel, he is comfortable in declaring her death as a homicide. Krentel shared a home with St. Tammany District 12 Fire Chief Steve Krentel. Authorites have not said much about the case.

A woman who was eight months pregnant is dead and the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s office is looking for two persons of interest, 29-year-old Mark Trimble and his sister, 32-year-old Toni Trimble. Both are from Catahoula. Major Ginny Higgins says anyone with information is urged to come forward…

Wilson’s family says it is extremely difficult to ship his medication to Guatemala and he is running out of his prescription. Johnson says they understand Guatemala is a sovereign nation and respect the rule of law but the charges brought against Wilson are not justified.

A new study finds that Louisiana’s lawsuit climate is the worst in the nation, and also showed this ranking is not good when it comes to attracting new businesses. Harold Kim is the executive vice president of the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform. He says the survey found that 85% of company attorneys said a state’s lawsuit climate is likely to impact decision making:

Kim says the areas Louisiana ranked poorly were the in the competence and impartiality of its judges, the fairness of its juries and quality of appellate review. Kim says the poll of more than 1300 attorneys or leaders in companies also asked what they thought the worst jurisdictions were in the US:

 Northwestern State University’s fall enrollment has reached its highest ever in the school’s 133-year history, with 10,572 students. NSU President Dr. Chris Maggio says this is one of the most meaningful milestones in the school’s long history. He credits this achievement to the university’s academics.
