The LSU Tigers improved to 5-7 in the SEC on Saturday with an easy 82-66 win over Ole Miss. Duop Reath had a huge game, 26 points, five rebounds and a blocked shot. Skylar Mays added 17 points, 15 in the second half. The game was tied at halftime, but the Tigers outscored the Rebels 45-29 in the second half. LSU is at Alabama tomorrow night. The Crimson Tide upset 15th ranked Tennessee on Saturday.

UL-Lafayette bounced back from a loss last Thursday by beating Georgia Southern 102-91 on Saturday. Johnathan Stove scored a career-high 28 points, while Bryce Washington had a double-double 18 points and 13 rebounds. The Cajuns are now 11-1 in the Sun Belt, still in first place.

ULM had a successful road trip to the Peach State as they beat Georgia State 90-82 in overtime. Sam McDaniel had 23 points and 12 reobunds. The Warhawks are 5-7 in the Sun Belt.

Louisiana Tech fell to 6-7 in Conference USA by losing to Old Dominion 82-69. The Bulldogs host UAB on Thursday.

Nicholls heads into the week still in first place in the Southland Conference as the Colonels won their third straight on Saturday as they defeated Houston Baptist 94-67. Tevon Saddler had 22 points, while Roddy Peters had 21 points and 12 rebounds. Nicholls has a huge game on Wednesday as the host Sam Houston State. The Bearcats are a half game back of Nicholls for first place.

Southeastern and UNO are also tied with Sam Houston for second place. The Lions beat McNeese 74-67 on Saturday and they host UNO on Wednesday night.

Grambling State has moved into a tie for first place in the SWAC as they’ve won nine straight. They beat Prairie View 90-85 on Saturday. Tonight they are at Texas Southerm

Legislative leaders are optimistic the February special session will end with a deal to fill the one billion dollar budget gap that’s the result of the expiration of sales taxes in July. The session will begin February 19th, and House Democratic Caucus Chairman Gene Reynolds says the two sides are getting close on an agreement.

Governor Edwards has pushed for replacing the expiring one cent sales tax by eliminating certain sales tax deductions that benefit businesses. House Republican Caucus Chairman Lance Harris says he’s open to eliminating those deductions, if it’s coupled with spending reductions.

Governor John Bel Edwards and state Transportation Secretary Shawn Wilson are in Washington DC today to participate in a roundtable discussion at the White House about President Donald Trump’s plans to improve infrastructure across the country. The White House has indicated states may be required to put up additional matching dollars to get access to the potential wealth of federal infrastructure dollars. If so, Wilson says failing to pass a gas tax increase could make it tough to get those funds.

Governor John Bel Edwards has issued the call for a special session to address the fiscal cliff. It will begin February 19th and must end March 7th. Edwards says the special session will give legislators an opportunity to pass reforms to stablize the budget and tax code. It’s still unclear what tax bills House Republicans are willing to support.

Landry says in bigger states, the Corp would not have gotten away with the over expansion…

The Saints have announced they are raising ticket prices for next season. The NFL franchise has told their fans that 75-percent of the seats will see an increase of 10-percent or less and some seats could see even higher increases. The team says the extra revenue will be used to improve the fan experience inside the Mercedes Benz Superdome. The Saints also say it will put their ticket prices around the league average.

The Pelicans begin a three-game road trip in Philadelhipa tonight as they take on the 76ers. New Orleans is just 1-4 since All-Star DeMarcus Cousins went down with a season ending knee injury. But the Pels should feel fresh after Wednesday night’s game was postponed because of a leaky Smoothie King Center roof. Tip off is at 6 PM in the Wells Fargo Center.

LSU baseball has been picked to finish fourth in the SEC West in a preseason poll of the coaches. Arkansas is the favorite to win the West, followed by Texas A-and-M and Ole Miss.

The LSU men’s basketball team is back home Saturday afternoon to host the Ole Miss Rebels. Both teams are 4-7 in league play, but the Rebels have lost four in a row. Tigers Coach Will Wade says Ole Miss has good size and they are physical. He says the key is keeping them off the free throw line.

After losing their first Sun Belt game of the year, UL Lafayette is at Georgia Southern on Saturday for a 4 PM tip. ULM visits Georgia State, who just beat the Cajuns. The Warhawks are coming off an overtime win over Georgia Southern.

Louisiana Tech has a tough matchup inside the Thomas Assembly Center on Saturday night as they host Old Dominion. The Monarchs are 9-2 in Conference Play, while the Bulldogs are 6-and-6.

In the Southland, first place Nicholls State hosts Houston Baptist. Southeastern Louisiana, who is a half-game back of the Colonels is at McNeese State.

Grambling who has won eight in a row visits Prairie View A-and-M. Southern hosts SWAC leader Arkansas Pine Bluff.

The carnival season ramps up this weekend with parades all across the state. Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser says New Orleans is the focal point for Mardi Gras, but the entire state benefits from an influx of tourists who want to be a part of the celebration….

Weather will be an issue for the parades that roll tomorrow as some areas of the state could see a couple of inches of rain. But Nungesser knows that will not dampen the spirit….

Congress approved a spending bill that reopened the federal government after a brief shutdown over the night. Louisiana’s delegation voted three to five against accepting the budget deal. Senator John Kennedy voted against the bill, saying the spending increases are not paid for.

Cut 9 (10) “new expenses.”

The bill includes a substantial increase in defense and discretionary funding, including billions in additional disaster relief money, much of which should find its way back to 2016 Louisiana flood victims. Kennedy says despite voting against the bill, he sees some upside from the deal.

Kennedy was joined in voting no by Senator Bill Cassidy, and Representatives Cedric Richmond, Mike Johnson, and Garret Graves. Representatives Ralph Abraham, Clay Higgins, and Steve Scalise voted yes.

The spending bill includes a reported 165 billion dollar increase in military spending. North Louisiana Representative Ralph Abraham says that’s what got his vote.

Abraham is not happy about increasing the deficit, but he says the predictions for how much the debt will balloon may be overstated.

Abraham says the increase in defense spending will be a substantial boost the Louisiana economy.

Attorney General Jeff Landry filed a lawsuit against the Corps of Engineers alleging that the Corps expanded the Intracoastal Waterway in Vermillion Parish beyond the borders set in a 1920s agreement. Landry says the Corps has increased the size of the waterway far past what the state imagined, which the AG says has contributed to the decline of Louisiana’s coastline.

Landry says he’s seeking to force the Corps to roll back the waterway to the limits the state initially agreed to.

The Corps routinely makes arrangements with states that allow it to construct new waterway projects. Landry says in bigger states, the Corp wouldn’t have gotten away with the over expansion.

The Governor says he’ll review the suit, but is concerned Landry did not consult with him, or the Coastal Protection and Restoration authority, the agency charged with developing coastal protection plans, before filing the suit.

Monroe authorities arrested a 23-year-old after receiving a call about a man climbing a pole in his underwear. According to a police affidavit, Ballard Layton Rose was pulling on electrical equipment and told the cops he was chewing grass to avoid being electrocuted. Officers checked Rose’s wallet and found a substance that appeared to be methamphetamine. He was booked on drug charges.

Drax Biomass announces its moving its corporate headquarters from Atlanta to Monroe. Drax operates two wood pellet manufacturing faciliies and a shipping operation in Louisiana. Monroe Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Sue Nicholson says Drax joins CenturyLink as another big company with its headquarters in Monroe….

Former Saints backup quarterback Doug Nussmeier has reportedly been hired as an offensive analyst at LSU. Nussmeier has served as offensive coordinator at Alabama, Michigan and Florida, but his offenses struggled in Ann Arbor and Gainesville. But when at Alabama, the Tide won the BCS national title in 2012.

Saints assistant head coach Dan Campbell reportedly interviewed for the Indianapolis Colts head coaching job. Campbell is 41-years-old and served as an interim coach for the Dolphins for 12 games in 2015. Campbell has been with the Saints since 2016.

Dante Cunningham is no longer with the Pelicans. New Orleans traded the veteran forward to Brooklyn for shooting guard Rashad Vaughn. The deal was completed right before the NBA’s trading deadline. Vaughn is 21-years-old, but he’s only averaged three points a game during his three-year NBA career. New Orleans begins a three-game road trip tonight in Philadelphia.

The Ragin Cajuns are no longer unbeaten in the Sun Belt after losing to Georgia State 106-92. The Panthers shot 54% from the field. UL-Lafayette shot 43-percent and were led by Frank Bartley who had 21 points.

ULM won in overtime over Georgia Southern 66-64. Travis Munnings had a monster game as he had 26 points and 20 rebounds. Senior Sam McDaniel had 23 points and knocked down six 3-pointers.

Tulane lost in overtime as Tulsa knocked off the Green Wave 91-89, despite 20 points from Jordan Cornish.

Louisiana Tech started a four game homestand by beating Charlotte 83-65. Five players scored in double figures for the Bulldogs led by Sophomore Daquan Bracey who had 17 points.

And in the Southland, despite a furious comeback McNeese State lost to Stephen F Austin 99-95. The Cowboys trailed by 24 points at halftime and scored 63 points in the 2nd half to make it a game.
