A domestic violence firearms bill cleared a House panel that further restricts possession of a gun by someone who is under a protective order. Currently its prohibited for an abuser to have a weapon, this bill prohibits among other things carrying a concealed weapon. Mariah Wineski is the executive director of the Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

Domestic Violence survivor and advocate Tiffany Morgan was shot in the face by an angry boyfriend. Morgan says she’s been diagnosed with severe depression and PTSD as a result of her traumatic experience…

The Senate-approved bill heads to the House floor. It requires offenders to declare in open court what firearms they possess. Morgan says this bill would help domestic violence victims.

Louisiana now ranks second in the nation with the highest hit and run rate of fatal crashes per capita, according to a new survey from the AAA foundation. The national study concluded there is a hit and run fatality every minute in the nation. Don Redman is with AAA

A woman is under arrest for allegedly stealing a horse, and selling it for 1,000 dollars cash on the internet. 27-year-old Sarah Broussard of Scott was booked into the Lafayette Parish Jail on the charge of Theft of Property valued over 500 dollars. Ag Commisioner Mike Strain says the purchaser had no clue the horse was stolen.

The horse was being housed in Lafayette Parish, while its owner lived elsewhere. Strain says the owner had no clue the horse had been swiped.

Strain says this incident is a good reminder to all livestock purchasers to check the papers before you drop the cash.

Concerns are being raised about a House bill that includes an application for funding a Boy Scouts project, but did not include an application for a girl scouts project. Girl Scouts Louisiana East spokesperson Mary-Patricia Wray says neither project is guaranteed to be funded, but allowing both applications to be considered would send a message of equality.

The Girl Scouts are seeking funding for a project that would prevent a lake in Tangipahoa from spilling into the Tangipahoa River. Wray says the lake is a valuable part of the community.

Redman says the lack of sidewalks on rural roads is a factor for Louisiana’s high fatal hit and run rate.

Should public school students attending K-through-eighth grade have a mandatory 30-minute recess. The House Education Committee has endorsed legislation that does just that, despite opposition from the Louisiana Association of Principals, who raised concerns it would cut back on classroom time. Former LSU running back Derius Guice says he’ll be dressing casual tonight for the NFL draft. The Baton Rouge native is expected to be a first round pick, but stories have been written that say NFL teams have character issues with Guice. Draft analyst Mike Detillier believes these reports are agent driven….

Detillier says Pittsburgh has the 28th pick and they are interested in Guice, but he could go sooner.

Detillier has the Saints using their 27th pick to select Harold Landry, a defensive end and outiside linebacker from Boston College. NFL-dot-com’s Ian Rapoport reports the Saints are looking to make a major jump from 27.

One more practice today at their training facility in Metairie and then the Pelicans are on their way to Oakland as Game 1 of their series with Golden State begins Saturday night at 9:30. It’s unknown if two-time MVP Steph Curry will be avaiable to play in Game 1 or any point during the series. He’s been sidelined by a Grade 2 MCL strain for the last month.

The LSU basketball program has received a verbal commitment from junior college forward Marlon Taylor. He’s six-foot-six and averaged 17 points and nearly 10 rebounds per game at Panola College. Taylor also shot 44-percent from three point territory.

LSU baseball begins a series tonight against Ole Miss. The Tigers are hoping the return of Josh Smith in the line-up can help jump start an offense that’s struggled to score runs at times. Smith hit a home run in a win over Lamar on Tuesday. It was his first game back since injuring his back in the opening weekend.

A Senate Committee pases a House-approved bill that would allow families to put video cameras in the nursing home rooms of loved ones. Baton Rouge Senator Dan Claitor says after using cameras to watch his elderly father, he’s supportive of the idea.

Tonight is the first round of the NFL draft. New Orleans enters the three-day draft process with a total of eight picks and most of them coming in the later rounds. Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis on what goes into their evaluation of a potential prospect

Loomis also said the Saints don’t have anything against LSU, even though the NFL franchise has selected just two former Tigers since 2004. They have the 27th pick overall tonight, it’s unlikely they will select running back Derius Guice, who is expected to be the only LSU player taken in the first round. Cornerback, tight end and pass rusher are the major priorities for the Saints.

The Pelicans second round Western Conference playoff series versus Golden State will begin on Sunday night in Oakland. The Warriors are expected to provide an update tomorrow on two-time MVP Stephen Curry, who has not played since March 23rd because of a sprained M-C-L injury. Friday, marks exactly five weeks since the injury, so he is expected to return sometime during the series.

According to Tiger Rag-dot-com, junior college forward Marlon Taylor has committed to LSU. He’s a six-foot-six athletic wing from Panola College in Florida. He averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds last season, while shooting 44-percent from three-point territory.

In college baseball…Northwestern State, who beat Mississippi Valley State 21-0 on Tuesday night, did even more damage against the Delta Devils on Wednesday as they beat them 34-0 on Wednesday.

The Rain Cajuns defeated UNO eight to six. Gavin Bouregois drove in four runs.

The LSU Tigers begin an SEC series tonight versus Ole Miss. The Bayou Bengals trail the Rebels and Arkansas by one game for the division lead in the SEC West.

Festival season is kicking off in Louisiana, with a busy schedule that’s bound to keep the Bayou State buzzing for months to come. This weekend may be the busiest, with huge celebrations in New Orleans and Lafayette. Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser is calling on folks to “staycation” in Louisiana with a trip to New Orleans this weekend.

The golf tournament is the Zurich Classic, in Avondale just south of New Orleans.

But New Orleans isn’t the only town throwing down this weekend. Lafayette is hosting the Festival International, and Nungesser says visitors will be treated to a multicultural cornucopia of talent

Jazz Fest is expected to bring in roughly 300-million dollars. Nungesser says thousands of tourists will be in the state and he hopes their visit will lead to more tourism…

Cuban tree frogs have moved into New Orleans, and are now threatening to muscle out the locals according to the US Geological Survey. The frogs are invasive, and are suspected to have hopped a ride to the Crescent City on palm trees imported from Florida. Ecologist Brad Glorioso says it’s a threat to the state amphibian, the green tree frog.

It’s not just the local wildlife that’s at risk, Glorioso says they have a history of terrorizing homeowners.

He also warned that the frog’s skin causes a burning sensation in people and animals that touch it.

Glorioso has some advice for New Orleanians brave enough to fight back against the foreign threat.

The House Education Committee passed a proposal that would require schools provide a 30 minute recess break to students. Currently schools must have 30 minutes of physical activity, which is covered in many districts by PE class. Houma Representative and sponsor Beryl Amedee says recess is crucial to a child’s educational development.

But the legislation received opposition from the Louisiana Association of Principles, who raised concerns that it would cut back on classroom time. Executive Director Debra Schum says schools would struggle to accomplish this under current class time requirements.

But Amedee says despite the difficulties that would come with requiring recess, it’s still a worthwhile endeavor.

Houma Senator Norby Chabert says the legislation is designed to keep the elderly safe.

Tangipahoa voters will not get a chance to decide if they want a riverboat casino in their parish. A bill that called for a local referendum in November did not pass the Senate on a 15-18 vote. A House bill that would have done the same thing, also failed to get out of a House Committee.

A casino operator in Bossier City has looked at moving their license to Tangipahoa.

Supporters seeking to end Louisiana’s requirement that only 10 of 12 jurors are needed in order to secure a conviction in felony cases won a legislative battle today as the measure received approval from a House committee. The constitutional amendment would require all 12 jurists to agree on guilty or not guilty. The author of the legislation, New Orleans Senator, J-P Morrell says Louisiana is one of the two states using a Jim Crow era law in felony trials….

The uanimous jury proposal has already been approved by the Senate, it now heads to the House and will need voter approval as well.

Baton Rouge police say a two-year accidentally shot his eight-year-old brorther inside a vehicle. Detectives say the boys’ father left the loaded handgun unattended when he got out of the car. The child was shot in the arm, but the injury is not considered life-threatening.

The House Criminal Justice Committee approves a constitutional amendment that calls for all 12 members of a criminal jury to agree on the guilt or innocence of an accused person. Current law only requires 10. The debate digressed to a racial issue when an opponent, Calcasieu D.A. John Derosier, brushed off the notion that unanimous juries were racially driven.

Committee member Ted James of Baton Rouge fired back at Derosier.

The bill’s author, New Orleans Senator J.P. Morrell, cited 180 year old documents to make his point why convictions in felony should be unanimous…

Louisiana and Oregon are the only two states without Unanimous jury requirements. The Senate has already approved the proposal and it will need a two-thirds vote on the House floor.

A Senate-approved bestiality bill that’s been grabbing headlines passed unanimously through a House committee. The bill would update bestiality laws, and codify them as only applying to acts between man and animal. Some opponents argue the bill is an attempt to protect homosexual behavior. The bill’s sponsor, New Orleans Senator JP Morrell.

Louisiana Family Forum President Gene Mills objected to certain parts of the bill, because he says as written, the law would remove human on human acts from criminality.

Opponents say they aren’t supporting bestiality, they’re just opposed to the way the bill was worded, arguing that it was too vauge and could be extended to human behavior. Dr. Will Hall says existing laws are enough.

Smoothie King is moving its corporate headquarters out of New Orleans, and taking most of it’s 80 jobs to a new location in Dallas. Greater New Orleans Inc. President Michael Hecht says Smoothie King’s owner is Korean and is seeking better access to his overseas holdings.
