State Police announce two current and former Troopers have been arrested on charges that include theft, malfeance and filing false records. Authorities say they filed and altered records in order to receive more overtime pay as part of a program that provides them extra cash for traffic enforcement. Colonel Kevin Reeves calls it an extremely disappointing day for their agency.

An LSU police officer is being sought for allegedly battering his girlfriend and holding her hostage overnight. Twenty-five-year-old Samuel Ellis the Third is facing charges of 2nd Degree Battery and False Imprisonment as a result. Baton Rouge Police Spokesman Sgt. Don Coppola says it was a brutal crime.

Investigators are trying to determine if severed heads discovered last month near lakes in Texas and Louisiana are connected. Cameron Parish Sheriff Ron Johnson says the head found in his parish next to Highway 27 and one in Texas are eerily similar.

The Texas and Louisiana connection according to Johnson seems to point toward a serial killer. The heads were found in similar surroundings about 150 miles apart at Lake Houston and Calcasieu Lake.

An inmate doing clenup labor found the severed head in Cameron Parish on March 1st. Volunteers cleaning near Lake Houston made their discovery on March 24th. Johnson believes that another body discovered in his parish in 2016 could also be a part of these similar crimes.

Lafayette General Health System has sent notices to 770 of its employees that they could be laid off because of a lack of state funding. The proposed budget for next fiscal year calls for a significant drop in state dollars to fund what are known as safety-net hospitals. Governor Edwards will likely call a special session in order for legislators to pass tax bills that would provide the state money to keep their partner hospitals open.

The Pelicans are down one game to nothing in their best of seven Western Conference playoff series with Golden State after a 123-101 loss in Oakland on Saturday night. Head Coach Alvin Gentry said the Pels were a little rusty after a week off between games, but point guard Rajon Rondo disagrees

The investigation continues today in Sunday’s fatal shooting involving a Shreveport Police officer. Authorities say the shooting occurred in the city’s Red River District when the officer and a man began to scuffle and the person who was shot allegedly tried to disarm the on-duty officer. It was another rough weekend for the LSU baseball team as they dropped their second straight SEC series. Ole Miss took two of three from the Tigers, winning the series on Saturday. In Saturday’s finale, Caleb Gilbert gave up five runs in the 7th inning in a 9-8 loss. The Tigers are 10-11 in the SEC tied for fourth place in the West. They will host first place Arkansas this weekend.

In the Southland, Southeastern Louisiana has won five in a row after sweeping Stephen F Austin.

And Scott Piercy and Billy Horschel won by one-shot in the Zurich Classic team event at TPC Louisiana in Avondale.

A political analyst says embattled Secretary of State Tom Schedler might not be able to stay in office much longer as the sexual harassment allegations against him will not go away. Bernie Pinsonat says published emails showing sexual advances by Schedler towards an employee could lead to his resignation…

A Senate-approved bill that would double, and in some cases, increased tenfold the fines associated with soliciting prostitutes passed a House committee nine to six. The bill would not change the current penalty of up to six months in jail for soliciting. Sponsor Franklinton Senator Beth Mizel says it attacks human trafficking at its root.

The bill would also allow judges to order people convicted of soliciting to attend an educational course that instruct “Johns” on how human trafficking destroys lives. Mizel says that kind of public shaming is a powerful disincentive.

Denham Springs Representative Valerie Hodges, supported the legislation, arguing that heavier punishments are the only thing the stop people from trying to buy sex.

Lawmakers are constitutionally barred from raising revenue in this regular session to plug the budget gap, and Alford says that means the safe money is on a special session starting up next month, where revenue issues can be considered.

The House passed budget includes massive cuts to healthcare, which administrators warn would lead to the end of public-private partnership hospitals. Alford says voters won’t accept those kinds of cuts, so revenues will have to be raised to replace the one penny sales tax that is set to expire in July.

No LSU Tigers were selected in the first round of the NFL draft, but three of them went in the second round, including running back Derius Guice, who didn’t hear his name called until late in the second round. The Washington Redskins took Guice with the 59th overall pick. One report says Guice fell in the draft because of immaturity and showing up late to visits with teams.

 

Cornerback Donte Jackson was the first Tiger taken as he went to the Carolina Panthers, who had the 55th pick. And Alexandria native and wide receiver DJ Chark is heading to Jacksonville as the Jaguars picked up him with the 61st pick.

 

LSU’s Arden Key, who at one time was considered a future first round pick, went in the third round to the Oakland Raiders.

 

Ragin Cajuns safety Tracy Walker went in the third round to the Lions.

 

The Saints used their third round selection to take Central Florida wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith, who caught 13 touchdown passes in 2017.

The Pelicans have a lot of confidence heading into tonight’s Game 1 of the Western Conference semi-final series versus the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors. New Orleans went 1-3 against Golden State in the regular season, but that one win came on April 7th. Stephen Curry didn’t play in that game and he’s close to returning from that knee injury. He’s listed as questionable tonight. Tip time 9:30.

 

The LSU baseball team returned to the win column in the SEC last night by beating Ole Miss 5-2. After getting rouged up last week, Ma’Khail Hilliard threw seven strong innings, allowing one run and striking out six. Hunter Feduccia led the offense with three runs driven in, including a two-run double in the 6th inning.

 

Elsewhere, Louisiana Tech gave up four runs in the third inning and lost to Western Kentucky 6-1. UL Lafayette had a five to nothing lead, but lost to Georgia State 6-5 in the 12 innings. The Panthers scored the winning run on a squeeze bunt.

 

McNeese State fell behind 3-0 and lost to Sam Houston four to three. Taylor Schwaner drove in seven runs and Southeastern Louisiana smacked Stephen F Austin 11-2.
