Latest job numbers show that more Louisiana residents are employed than ever before. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, just over two-million people were employed last month, an increase of 47-thousand from the previous April. Executive Director of the Louisiana Workforce Commission, Ava Dejoie, says certain sectors of Louisiana’s economy continue to do well

Dejoie says education and health services added 78-hundred jobs for the year, while leisure and hospitality gained 67-hundred jobs.

Texas billionaire Tilman Fertitta purchased Lake Charles-based Waitr and the founder of the online restaurant delivery service, Chris Meaux, believes the extra capital will lead to an enhanced customer service experience….

The regular session is expected to end today, with a special session set for next week. Matt Doyle looks at some of the legislative accomplishments of the spring.

A bill that restores voting rights for some Louisiana felons has received final passage. The legislation is expected to give thousands of convicted felons who are still on probation and parole the ability to vote. Those eligible to take advantage of this law that’s expected to be signed by the governor must be out of prison for at least five years.

The 2018 regular session is expected to come to a close today. Once again equal pay legislation and an effort to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 an hour failed to pass. Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says proponents will have to wait a few years, before having a realistic shot at passing these bills…

The legislature has sent a budget for next fiscal year to the governor’s desk, but it remains to be seen if John Bel Edwards will sign it, because it contiains deep cuts in higher education, child welfare and funding for TOPS is reduced by 70-percent. Edwards has called for a special session to begin Tuesday, so legislators can pass revenue measures to fill the budget gaps. House Appropriations Chairman Cameron Henry says he’s open to passing revenue proposals, and they’ll get to hear from voters this weekend….

LSU will need a good start tonight from freshman Ma’Khail Hilliard if the Tigers are going to even up their series with Auburn. Auburn won last night 11-4 as LSU’s starter Zack Hess gave up five earned runs on six hits and three walks. Tonight, LSU faces the potential number one pick in next month’s Major League Baseball Draft, Casey Mize. He’s 9-3 with a 2.73. ERA. Hilliard has an 8.66 ERA over his last four starts. First pitch tonight is at 6.

The Ragin Cajuns dominance over ULM continued last night as UL-Lafayette’s Hayden Cantrell hit a walk-off home run in the 10th inning for a four to three victory. That’s 23 straight victories for the Cajuns over the Warhawks.

Louisiana Tech won its 36th game of the season last night as the bulldogs thumped Old Dominion 11-3. David Leal earned the victory and freshman Steele Netterville and Parker Bates each drove in four runs.

And Grambling beat Alabama State 12-7 and they are one win away from reaching the SWAC Tournament Championship game.

DeMarcus Cousins told The Undefeated” he’s very open to returning to the Pelicans if the deal is right. Cousins is an unrestricted free agent this summer and he’s also rehabbing from a season-ending Achilles injury. Cousins says he’ll be ready for the start of training camp in fall.

Saints and Pelicans Owner Gayle Benson’s horse Lone Sailor runs tomorrow in the Preakness. Lone Sailor will run from the second post and is listed as 15-1 favorite. Kentucky Derby winner Justify is the big favorite to win the second leg of the Triple Crown.

The Cleveland Browns will appear on HBO’s 2018 Hard Knocks television series. Cleveland is coming off an 0-16 season and have the number one pick in Baker Mayfield. It’s also a chance for fans to learn more about former LSU wide receiver Jarvis Landry, who was traded to Cleveland and signed a long term deal with the Browns.

The NCAA Softball Regional begins today in Baton Rouge. the Tigers will host Fordham tonight at 5:30. The 21st ranked Cajuns take on Houston at three o’ clock. McNeese plays Baylor in the College Station Regional.

LSU’s problems on the road continued last night and so did Zach Hess’s issues as he gave up five runs in three innings as the Tigers went on to lose 11-4 to Auburn. A two-run home run by Jake Slaughter was the only highlight for LSU, who fell to 14-14 in the SEC and 3-13 on the road. The Tigers face one of the top pitchers in college baseball tonight, nine-game winner Casey Mize.

Louisiana Tech had little trouble beating Old Dominion last night as the Bulldogs pounded the Monarchs 11-3. Parker Bates and Steele Netterville each hit home runs and each drove in four runs. The Bulldogs are now 19-9 in Conference USA.

The Ragin Cajuns won their 23rd straight game over ULM as Hayden Cantrelle hit his third home run of the season as UL Lafayette defeated the Warhawks four to three in ten innings. Little Rock lost, so the Cajuns have a game and a half lead over the Trojans for first place in the Sun Belt West.

Grambling improved to 2-0 in the SWAC Tournament with a 12-7 win over Alabama State last night in New Orleans. Rafael Ramirez had a couple of doubles and drove in four runs. Grambling plays again at six o’ clock tonight and if they win, they advance to the championship round.

In the Southland Conference, Nicholls kept its hope alive for making the Southland Tournament by scoring three runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to beat Central Arkansas 5-4. Kyle Knauth doubled to tie the game and then scored the game winning run on a fielder’s choice. Northwestern State doubled up UNO 6-3. Ridge Heisler won his sixth game of the year. McNeese pitching gave up 20 hits in a 12-5 loss to Lamar. And 22nd ranked Houston doubled up Southeastern Louisiana six to three.

In softball, the LSU regional gets underway today. At three o’ clock it will be UL Lafayette versus Houston and then at 5:30 it’s the Tigers versus Fordham.

McNeese is at the College Station Regional, where they’ll face off against Baylor.

Big game for the LSU baseball team tonight as they begin a series at Auburn. The Tigers are 3-and-13 on the road this season, which is hurting their chances of getting into the NCAA Tournament. Zach Hess will start on the mound tonight. He’s six and four with a 4.24 ERA. The sophomore right-hander says the key for him is throwing first pitch strikes…

Former SEC and Conference USA Commissioner Mike Slive has passed away at the age of 77. He was the founding commissioner of Conference USA and then led the SEC for 13 years. During that time the Southeastern Conference expanded to 14 schools, started the SEC Network and Slive played a big role in creating the college footbal playoff.

In college football recruiting news…Rummel Quarterback Chandler Fields has committed to the Ragin Cajuns. He’s listed as a three-star quarterback by 24-7 sports, the 37th best player ranked in the state for the Class of 2019.

In college basketball…Louisiana Tech has signed guard Kalob Ledoux, who will transfer in from McNeese State. The six-foot-three combo guard from Port Barre led the Cowboys in scoring the last two seasons. He’ll have to sit out the 2018-19 season, because of NCAA Transfer rules.

Governor John Bel Edwards addressed the recent US Supreme Court decision to allow sports betting outside of Nevada on his monthly talk radio show. 32 states have legislation in place to allow the activities, including Mississippi, but Louisiana shot down similar legislation this session. Edwards didn’t oppose the idea.

But don’t expect to see Senator Danny Martiny’s parish by parish legalization legislation to pop up again during the special session that starts next week.

Three anti-hazing bills are on their way to the governor’s desk following last fall’s death of LSU freshman Max Gruver. The house voted 88 to 1 in favor of final passage of house bill 78 otherwise known as the Max Gruver Act. East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore testified in favor of the measure to give the current laws more teeth.

Moore says a companion bill to force mandatory education for university fraternities and sororities should help  stop dangerous hazing.

Moore contends that the new law holds principals at the national level accountable for problems at the chapters.

In the new bill hazing that does not result in a death will still cost one thousand dollars and six months in jail.

It’s been a record breaking week of intense heat, that’s turned the usually tolerable Louisiana spring into a hot, soupy mess. State Climatologist Barry Keim says a high pressure system is camping just off the coast, leading to a historic scorcher that’s taken down long time state records.

A cool front is moving over the area starting today, which Keim says will make things just a little more pleasant this weekend than they’ve been this week.

The unusual heat is peaking with summer right around the corner, leading to concerns that we could be in store for a second year in a row of record breaking heat, but Keim says this unusual weather phenomenon is not an indicator of any long term trends.

The House approved Senate changes to the budget, that fully funds healthcare, but slashes higher ed, funding for state agencies, and cuts TOPS by 30 percent. The spending plan is now on its way to the Governor who has expressed opposition to the cuts. Metairie Representative Cameron Henry says the budget will identify what programs need to be funded with special session revenue.

But the Democratic Caucus opposed the passage of the budget, calling the cuts included immoral. They argued the legislature should wait until the special session, where revenue could be raised to fill the 648 million dollar budget gap to complete a budget. Caucus Chairman Robert Johnson:

Johnson says the budget passed is not feasible, and does not reflect a spending plan that the state could operate on.

LSU needs a good showing at Auburn over the next three days to help secure a spot in the NCAA Baseball Tournament. The latest projection from Baseball America has the Tigers as a three-seed in a regional hosted by Stetson. Zack Hess will start on the mound tonight for the Tigers. Hess says the team understands the urgency to play well at Auburn….

Baseball America has Louisiana Tech among the first four teams out of their bracket. The Bulldogs begin a series tonight in Ruston against Old Dominion, who has the worst record in Conference USA.

The Ragin Cajuns are also on the bubble and they begin a three-game series against in-state rival ULM. The Warhawks are trying to get the Sun Belt Tournament.

Former SEC and Conference USA Commissioner Mike Slive has passed away at the age of 77. He ran the Southeastern Conference from 2002 to 2015 and during that time revenues jumped from 96-million dollars to 456-million dollars. Slive helped establish the SEC Network and the college football play and the league expanded to 14 schools during his tenure.

The Pelicans Anthony Davis is a finalist for MVP and Defensive Player of the year awards. LeBron James and James Harden are the other finalists for MVP, while Davis’ competition for Defensive Player of the Year is Joel Embiid and Rudy Gobert. The awards will be given out June 25th.

In NFL news, the Saints have reportedly released special teams contributor and reserve linebacker Michael Mauti.

The Manning Passing Academy announced its first ever football clinic and camp for women and girls this summer. It will take place the weekend of June of 25th and 26th on the Nicholls campus. The Manning family says they want to provide women and girls with the same opportunity to learn the game as they’ve done for boys for the last 23 years.

The Senate approved a bill that would renew the state’s contract with Harrah’s New Orleans for at least 20 more years, contribute an additional 20 million dollars a year to the state’s coffers, and they would provide an upfront payment of 40-million dollars, which would be divided between the state and the city. Harrah’s would also agree to build a 350-million dollar hotel, with new restaurants and entertainment space. New Orleans Senator Karen Carter Peterson says if Harrah’s agrees, it’d be a huge investment in the state.

The measure heads back to the House to see if they agree to Senate changes with the legislation.

A bill that would have allowed teachers to join students in prayer during school hours was significantly changed by the House because of concerns were raised that it violated religious civil rights. The bill would have allowed the joint prayer to occur if all students present had a signed consent form from their parents. Shreveport Representative Alan Seabaugh says the old bill would have targeted religious minorities.

The amendments were rejected by the bill’s author, Bossier City Senator Ryan Gatti this moring, and a committee will try to iron out the differences.

Kenner Representative Julie Stokes announces she will run for Secretary of State this fall, becoming the first announced candidate to be the state’s election chief. Stokes if elected, she’ll encourage voter participation and protect Louisiana elections….

On a 21-16 vote, the Senate approves legislation that would provide Harrah’s New Orleans casino with a 20 to 30 year contract extension on its land-based license. In exchange, Harrah’s will build a 340-room luxury hotel and pay the state 84-million dollars a year starting in 2021. But Winnfield Senator Gerald Long wishes the legislature had more time to review the propsoal….

This November, Louisiana voters will decide if unanimous jury verdicts should be required in criminal trials. Under current law, it takes 10 of 12 juors to agree on a guilty verdict. Governor Edwards hopes the public will approve the change to the state’s constitution…

Because of consitutional concerns, the House has significantly changed a bill that attempts to allow teachers to participate in student-initiated prayer during the school day. But Ruston Representative Rob Shadion didn’t like the change, he supports the Senate version of the bill that requires each student to get a signed note from a parent, so the teacher can participate in the prayers…

More individuals could be eligible to receive a prescription to medical marijuana once it becomes available later this summer under two pieces of legislation that have received final passage. One of the proposals adds glaucoma, severe muscle spasms, intractable pain P-T-S-D and Parkinson’s. The other provides medicinal canibas as an option for autism patients.

The Governor addressed the 15 week abortion ban and unanimous jury constitutional amendment on his monthly talk show. Matt Doyle has more.
