Zion Williamson had 29 points, but Lebron James is still the king as the Lakers defeated the Pelicans 118 to 109. James hit five three-pointers and finished with 40 points. Brandon Ingram also had a big game for the Pels as he had 34 points. New Orleans returns home to face Cleveland on Friday and the Lakers again on Sunday, but this time in the Smoothie King Center.

Governor John Bel Edwards wants to raise the state’s minimum wage and Marrero Representative Kyle Green has filed legislation that would increase the minimum wage from $7.25 to nine dollars an hour in 2021. He says since the economy is booming, there’s no reason businesses can’t afford to pay their workers fairly.

A significant cold front is blasting into the state today. National Weather Service Shreveport meteorologist Brad Bryant says gusty, northwest winds will make it worth your while to dress warm.

Arkansas rose its minimum wage to 10 dollars this year. It’s set to rise to eleven dollars in 2021. Green says nine dollars an hour is still not a living wage, but he’s willing to work with opponents who might refuse a higher number.

Democrats running for President back a 15 dollar minimum wage by 2025.

The last increase in the minimum wage for Louisianans happened in 2009 under the Obama Administration. Green says we’re long overdue to increase it again.

Ash Wednesday begins the Lenten season and seafood becomes a popular dish.  Chairman of the Gulf Seafood Institute Harlon Pearce believes there should be plenty available.  Pearce says high water levels and weather conditions have resulted in a bountiful crawfish harvest.

Pearce says oysters went through a rough phase with the high Mississippi river levels, but now there are more than enough to go around and prices are leveling out much better than what they were.

Pearce says wild-caught Louisiana catfish are gaining in popularity among restaurants.

New data from the CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control shows Louisiana ranks fifth in the nation among states with the highest per capita gun death rates in 2018. The states with the highest rates are Mississippi, Alabama, Wyoming, Missouri followed by the Bayou State. Violence Policy Center, Legislative Director Kristen Rand explains what these states have in common.

Rand says there are several studies that show a correlation between areas that have stronger gun violence prevention laws and lower rates of gun deaths. Also, a key factor is lower exposure to firearms as represented by household gun ownership in having lower death rates.

The nationwide average for gun deaths is 12 per 100-thousand, in Louisiana the death rate is 21 per 100-thousand, significantly above the national average. Rand says it’s time for Louisiana to get proactive and prevent gun deaths.

Some NFL reporters have speculated Burrow would pressure Cincinnati not to draft him. Burrow says he’s looking forward to speaking with the Bengals about their plans on offense.

LSU Football Coach Ed Orgeron has reportedly promoted Kevin Faulk to running backs coach. Faulk, who is the school’s all-time leading rusher, will replace Tommie Robinson, who is taking the same job at Texas A-and-M. Faulk has served as the Tigers director of player development.

And remember the controversy surrounding Odell Beckham Junior and the handing out of cash after the national championship game. Wide receiver Justin Jefferson says he donated his money handshake to his church.

The Pelicans conclude their three-game Mardi Gras road trip in L-A tonight taking on Lebron James and the Lakers. L-A has won the two previous meetings, but Zion Williamson did not suit up for New Orleans in those two contests. Anthony Davis has had his way against his old team, averaging 44 points a contest in two previous games played between the two teams.

In college baseball tonight, ULM hosts Southeastern Louisiana at 6 PM. The Warhawks are 5-and-1, while the Lions are 3-and-3. The two teams will play again tomorrow at 4 PM in Monroe.

Also tomorrow, LSU hosts Louisiana Tech. Northwestern State is at UL-Lafayette, McNeese hosts Missouri at 3 PM. Yesterday, Nicholls scored three runs in the ninth inning to beat McNeese four to three. Xane Washington had the walk-off hit.

Millions are celebrating Mardi Gras around the world, but no one does it bigger than New Orleans.  The celebration has a large economic impact on the Big Easy, bringing in over $1 billion annually, which is roughly 2 percent of the city’s GDP.  Personal finance website WalletHub analyst Jill Gonzales says it’s growing too.

Of the roughly half-million King Cakes sold in Carnival season, about 50-thousand are shipped out of state overnight, with the average cost being around $40.  But for those that want to come into town for the festivities, Gonzales says visitors to New Orleans can expect to pay just shy of $300 per night to stay in the French Quarter.

The average price to attend a Mardi Gras ball is about $190 a ticket.  Gonzales says a VIP experience of riding on a float is upwards of $3000.

About 25 million pounds of beads are thrown during the celebrations.  92,000 pounds of beads are removed from storm drains after the celebration.

With two float related fatalities within days of each other involving tandem floats, New Orleans Police Superintendent  Shaun Ferguson made the call to cease the use of tandem floats for the remainder of the 2020 festivities.  Ferguson says he wants to hold meetings in the immediate future to discuss safety measures.

Ferguson received criticism for making the decision to suddenly stop the use of tandem floats for the remainder of Mardi Gras but he feels he made the correct choice.

Ferguson says safety is his top priority for the citizens of New Orleans and its visitors and he praised the Krewes that cooperated with the last minute changes involving floats.

Former LSU Quarterback Joe Burrow put to rest rumors today that he would pull an Eli Manning and not play for the Bengals who are expected to draft him with the number one pick in the NFL draft on April 23rd. Burrow spoke to reporters today at the draft combine and said if Cincinnati selects him number one, he’ll play for the Bengals. He looks forward to meeting with Cincinnati and other NFL teams while at the combine…

Burrow will not throw at the combine, but he’ll throw at LSU’s pro day on April 3rd.

Former LSU star Kevin Faulk is reportedly the Tigers new running backs coach. Faulk will replace Tommie Robinson, who is taking the same job at Texas A-and-M. Faulk has been LSU’s director of player development. The Lafayette native is one of the greatest running backs in LSU history and is still the school’s all-time leading rusher.

Pelicans rookie Zion Williamson will matchup with Lebron James for the first time in his NBA career tonight as New Orleans visits the Lakers. The Pels are 8-and-5 since Williamson began playing following knee surgery. New Orleans is just three games back of Memphis for the final playoff spot in the West, as the Grizzlies lost again last night, falling to the Clippers.

LSU Basketball Coach Will Wade is not happy his team will have a nine o’clock local time game in Gainesville on Wednesday night and then turn around have an 11 AM tip-off in the Maravich Center versus Texas A-and-M on Saturday. Wade says the Tigers are the only team in the league that’s had this short duration between games and it’s the second time this year.

ULM senior forward Tyree White has been named Sun Belt Player of the Week by College Sports Madness. He averaged 18 points and six rebounds a game as the Warhawks won two games last week.

Law enforcement warns revelers to be aware of their surroundings in an effort to keep from becoming a victim of pickpocketing. State Police Lieutenant Nick Manale says make sure to keep your belongings minimal.

Over the course of the past weekend, troopers have made numerous arrests and recovered thousands of dollars in stolen items nabbed by pickpocket suspects.

The votes are in for the 5th Annual King Cake Snob Competition. This year’s competition saw nearly 2,500 cake reviews from more than 500 different cakes from 170 bakeries across the Bayou State. Andrew Alexander with King Cake Snob says last year’s overall winner Manny Randazzo fell short of defending its crown.

A two-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 in St. John the Baptist Parish has claimed the life of a Baton Rouge mother, 27-year-old Tyandra Lewis, who was pregnant with twins. Her seven-year-old son was also killed when their vehicle was hit from behind. State Police Trooper Monroe Dillon says for some reason, they stopped in the left lane of travel…

The lawyer for a Bossier City businessman and a former police officer who allegedly killed, dismembered and disposed of co-worker Garrett Wilson, says his client is innocent. Wilson’s remains were found in a north Bossier Parish field. Defense attorney Randal Fish tells KTBS-TV that John Hardy uses a walker to get around and finds it hard to believe Hardy could do this in his ambulatory condition.

They will chase live chickens today in the southwest Louisiana town Iowa as residents there still celebrate Mardi Gras the traditional way. Run Captain Rodney Victorian says they will go around town knocking on doors seeking ingredients to make a community gumbo and at each stop, a live chicken is released…
