Ponchatoula police announce the arrest of six individuals, between the ages of 18 and 21 years-old in a shooting last Saturday that wounded two teenagers at the Strawberry Festival. The alleged gunman is 18-year-old Camryn Finley as he’s charged with attempted second-degree murder and terrorizing. The victims are expected to recover and Police Chief Bry Layrisson says the goal is to make sure a shooting at the Strawberry Fest never happens again…

Three Louisiana baseball teams had great come from behind victories last night. The Fighting Tigers trailed five to one to Alabama, but Ashton Larson and Steven Milam each hit three-run home runs and the Tigers won 11 to 6 at Alex Box Stadium.

Louisiana Tech blew a four-to nothing lead, but scored three runs in the ninth inning to beat Liberty seven to six. Coach Lane Burroughs on the thrilling win…

Big win for the Cajuns last night as well as U-L scored two runs in the ninth and one in the tenth to beat Old Dominion six to five. Game 2 is at 2 PM today.

The ULM softball team improved to 20-0 at home with a 1 to nothing win over Georgia Southern.

The top ranked LSU gymnastics team falls short of reaching the NCAA Championships as they struggled to hit on many of their routines in the semifinals and will not have a chance at defending its title. Coach Jay Clark says a great season ends in disappointment

What a win for the ninth-ranked LSU baseball team last night as they rallied from a four-run deficit to beat 15th-ranked Alabama 11 to six. Ashton Larson started the rally with a three-run pinch-hit home run, Steven Milam gave LSU the lead with another three-run homer, and Ethan Frey had a two-run blast. Casan Evans was dominant out of the bullpen in getting the win. Evans says it was a great victory after getting swept last weekend…

LSU has won 19 straight home games, and host Bama again tonight at 6 PM.

Louisiana Tech had a dramatic victory last night as Eli Berch’s walk-off single gave the Bulldogs a seven to six win over Liberty. Tech scored three runs in the ninth to win.

The Cajuns won in ten innings last night, tying the game with two runs in the ninth, and then Drew Markle drove in the go-ahead run in the tenth inning in a six-to-five win over Old Dominion.

ULM lost to 20th ranked Troy nine to three, Grambling beat Alcorn 21 to 4, Southeastern, Nicholls, and McNeese all won, while Northwestern lost.

LSU gymnastics will not repeat as national champs, as they failed to advance out of the NCAA Championship semifinals. The Tigers could not consistently hit on their routines.

Spring football is over for LSU, and defensive end Gabriel Reliford is looking forward to his sophomore season…

Easter wouldn’t be complete for generations in Louisiana without Elmer Chocolate’s Heavenly Hash and Gold Brick Eggs, seasonal treats produced at its Ponchatoula factory. Though Tangipahoa Parish is famed for strawberries, Elmer’s has added sweetness to the town’s legacy for decades. CEO Rob Nelson says a major transformation came in 2016.

Despite high-tech advances, Elmer’s still hand-makes its iconic Easter treats, preserving tradition.  Nelson says they start making Easter candy after Christmas.

In its first year, the LA GATOR scholarship program has proven to be a hit – maybe a little too much of a hit. So much so that it’s unlikely that the state can accommodate all applicants. Barry Erwin, the chief policy officer for Leaders for a Better Louisiana, says 40-thousand students registered for the program during the now-closed registration period.

Erwin says while the LA GATOR program expands eligibility from the previous program, it’s unlikely that anyone outside those who the previous program was targeted for will be able to secure one of those scholarships.

Erwin says furthermore, the state may need to scramble to come up with the money it had previously allotted to the program when it passed it last year.

Funeral arrangements are announced for former LSU receiver Kyren Lacy. The celebration of life for Kyren Lacy will be held one week from tomorrow – April 26th – at 11 a.m. at the David Stopher Gymnasium in Thibodaux; it will follow a two-hour visitation. Meanwhile, we’re getting more insight into his final moments. Jacques Doucet (doo-SAY), the sports director at WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge, says Lacy’s family became concerned for his well-being following his involvement in a fatal crash in November.

Doucet says last Saturday, Lacy started acting erratically.

Doucet says after Lacy left the house with the gun, his family called police.

If you drive a pickup truck, police will be paying close attention to see whether you’re wearing your seatbelt. Through April 27th, the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission is sponsoring “Buckle Up In Your Truck.” Spokesman Greg Fischer:

Fischer says if an officer catches you without your seatbelt on, expect to make a little donation to your local municipality.

Why single out pickup trucks? Fischer says the reason is on average, seatbelt use in pickup trucks trails that in all other vehicles.

LSU football wrapped up spring practice on Thursday. After finishing dead last in the SEC in rushing offense last year, offensive guard Paul Mubenga says during spring practice, the o-line focused a lot on two specific areas…

The college football spring transfer portal is open, but running back Kaleb Jackson has no plans of entering the portal, despite only rushing for 150 yards last season as he backed up Caden Durham. Jackson says he beefed up to 235 pounds last year, but he’s making his way back to 225…

Because of a lack of depth on the defensive line, Shreveport’s Gabriel Reliford saw playing time as a true freshman, playing in all 13 games and recording ten tackles, one tackle for a loss, and a half a sack. Reliford says last year was a learning experience, but he wants to be a  difference maker his sophomore season…

Coach Jay Johnson’s team was swept last weekend in Auburn, while Bama has lost its last two weekend series, falling to Auburn and Mississippi State.

After losing a series at U-L-M last weekend, the Ragin Cajuns are back on the road taking on Old Dominion. The Monarchs are 7-8 in the Sun Belt, while the Cajuns are 8-7.

ULM is now 5-10 in league play as they’ve won three in row, but they have a tough series at Troy. The Trojans are 10-5.

If one New Orleans-area lawmaker has his way, there will be no more afternoon games at LSU in September.

ESPN says Lee Corso will do one more College Gameday on August 30th and then retire. The 89-year-old Corso has been on College Gameday for nearly four decades and is an icon for wearing the headgear of mascots. He’s made 430 mascot headgear picks, selecting LSU 25 times, third most behind Ohio State and Alabama.

Louisiana Tech begins a three-game series against Liberty tonight. The Bulldogs are  a half game out of first place in Conference USA.

Two of the top teams in the Southland meet in Hammond tonight as Southeastern hosts UTRGV.  The Lions team ERA is 3.33, fourth best in the nation.

 

The Pelicans will introduce Joe Dumars as its new executive vice president of basketball operations at a press conference on Tuesday. Host of the Locked on Pelicans podcast, Jake Madison, expects Dumars will retain Willie Green as the head coach, but former number one overall pick Zion Williamson could be traded because of his inability to stay healthy.

ESPN announced today that Lee Corso will make his final appearance on College Gameday on August 30th. Corso will turn 90-years-old in August and he’s been with ESPN since 1987. College Gameday personality helped make the show popular with his headgear picks at the end of every show. With LSU opening the season at Clemson, a potential Top 10 matchup, there’s a possibility Gameday will be at Clemson.

The House Civil Law Committee approves legislation that says if a police officer determines a driver is 51-percent or more at fault, than the driver can not recover any insurance money for injuries. Defense Attorney Sidney Degan says the proposed legislation could reduce the amount of dollars awarded in a multi-vehicle wreck, which would help reduce rates and frivolous lawsuits.

Lawmakers say reducing accidents can help bring down insurance rates. That’s why Alexandria Senator Jay Luneau has authored a bill that would ticket drivers who travel at the speed limit or below in the left lane. Luneau says he’s received a lot of positive feedback…

The measure is heading to the Senate floor after receiving approval from Senate Transportation.

The Louisiana Department of Education says over 39-thousand Louisiana students have applied for state funding through the L-A Gator Scholarship program, the state’s new voucher program. Governor Jeff Landry has proposed 93-million dollars should be allocated for the program next school year, but that would only serve 12-thousand students.

An auto insurance reform bill advances to the full House, with the support of the governor and despite the opposition of the insurance commissioner. Andrew Greenstein reports.

The Senate Transportation Committee approved a bill that can result in a 150-dollar fine for driving in the left lane and not attempting to pass other vehicles. The House Natural Resources Committee has approved legislation to ban outdoor balloon releases, once the balloon falls back to the ground, it becomes litter and a threat to wildlife.

The district attorney in Catahoula Parish is seeking the death penalty against a Las Vegas man who killed a 12-year-old girl in Catahoula Parish. Former President Joe Biden commuted the federal death sentence of Thomas Sanders who was found guilty of killing Lexis Roberts. Catahoula D-A Brad Burget believes Sanders should be executed for what he’s done and a state grand jury this week indicted him on a first-degree murder charge…

Northwestern State is working to establish a law school and executive vice president and provost Greg Handel says if they get the necessary approvals from the U-L System and the Board of Regents, they could hopefully begin teaching law in the fall of 2026…

The idea started picking up steam when the school hired NSU graduate and former Louisiana Supreme Court Justice James Genovese as its new president last year.

A measure that would prevent a driver from recovering damages when they are at 51-percent or more at fault in an accident has received approval from the House Civil Law Committee. It passed on an 11-4 vote, but Plaquemine Representative Chad Brown voted against it, because if a plaintiff who is mostly at fault for an accident can’t recover damages than a defendant who is mostly at fault should have to pay 100-percent of the damages.

Legislation that would fine a driver 150-dollars for camping in the left lane, just driving the speed limit and not using the lane as a passing lane is headed to the Senate floor. Alexandria Senator Jay Luneau says currently a motorist can get a ticket if they are driving 10 miles per hour below the speed limit in the left lane…

In the Sun Belt, the Ragin Cajuns are at Old Dominion, while ULM looks for its fourth straight win tonight and the Warhawks are at Troy. The Trojans are 10-5 in the Sun Belt.

IN the Southland…McNeese hosts A-and-M Corpus Christi, while Southeastern hosts UTRGV.

The Pelicans have hired Natchitoches native Joe Dumars as their executive director of basketball operations. Dumars was the President of Basketball Operations in Detroit when the Pistons won an NBA title in 2004. But a lot of his draft picks flopped, his free agent signings fizzled and some of his trades did not pan out. But Jake Madison, Host of the Locked on Pelicans Podcast, says the NBA Hall of Famer is respected around the league…

Tonight at 8:00 the top-seeded LSU gymnastics team competes in the semifinals of the NCAA Championships. There are eight teams left, and LSU will participate in the semifinal number two against Utah, UCLA and Michigan State.
