Enjoy the mild weather today, because a strong cold front moves through the state tomorrow, dropping our temperatures significantly. When we wake up Monday morning, temperatures will be in the upper 30s in the northern parishes and in the 40s closer to the coast. And Chanelle Stigger, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service out of Lake Charles, says temperatures will stay cool all day long.

Louisiana is outpacing the national average three times over when it comes to V-A benefits growth. From fiscal year 2023 to fiscal 2024, there was a six-percent increase in the number of veterans accessing critical support programs, tripling the national average of two-percent. Louisiana V-A Secretary Charlton Meginley says more than 82-thousand veterans receive more than two-billion dollars in V-A compensation.

According to a story in the Advocate Newspaper, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has signed an agreement with a developer for the construction of two large scale solar farms. One of the sites is in Morehouse Parish and the other is in Sabine Parish. It’s tied to the tech giant’s massive data center in Richland Parish.

LSU football visits fourth-ranked Alabama tonight. The Tigers’ offense and defense have been going against each other in inside run drills, which require more physicality from the linemen. Interim Head Coach Frank Wilson says he’s pleased with his team’s tenacity in practice this week….

Last night in high school football….Franklin Parish over Tioga 61 to 22, Evangel Christian pounded Parkway 55 to 27. Loyola Prep edged Northwood Shreveport 28 to 27, Destrehan topped Thibodaux 49 to 26 and Ruston over West Monroe 49 to 44.

More uncertainty surrounding the SNAP program as the Supreme Court issued an emergency order to block full SNAP food aid payments. Yesterday, the Louisiana Department of Health began distributing federal SNAP funds. The food stamps went to households that included the elderly and disabled and the next distribution was set to go out on Sunday. But the Trump Administration got an appeals court in Massachusetts to suspend a lower court’s ruling that said the federal government had to provide full food benefits. The Trump Administration says it has already exhausted the five-billion dollars that were in contingency reserve and can only provide partial food assistance payments for the month.

After tumultuous two weeks, the LSU football team plays Alabama tonight in Tuscaloosa. Louisiana Tech looks for its sixth win of the season at Delaware, the Ragin Cajuns host Texas State and last night Tulane scored 35 points in the first half and held on to beat 22nd ranked Memphis 38 to 32. The Green Wave are 7-2, 4-1 in the American Conference.

The percentage of veterans in Louisiana receiving V-A benefits is outpacing the national average threefold. Andrew Greenstein reports.

Last night was the final Friday night of the high school football regular season. Ruston outscored West Monroe 49 to 44 in a wild victory to claim a district championship. The Bearcats are expected to be the top seed in division one non select when the official brackets come out tomorrow. Jena will likely be the top seed in Division 3 non-select, after beating Buckeye 52-0.

The Saints are a 5.5 point underdog as they travel to Carolina to take on the Panthers, who are 5-and-4 on the season. Carolina is getting good production from former Cowboy Rico Dowdle. Dowdle had 130 yards rushing and two touchdowns last week against Green Bay. New Orleans linebacker Demario Davis on Carolina’s offense…

UL-Lafayette snapped a three-game losing streak by beating South Alabama, 31-22, in Mobile last week. Even though it hasn’t been the ideal season, head coach Michael Desormeaux (DEZ-er-moe) was happy for his group and wants his team to continue to play with the same determination this week.

The Cajuns are 3-and-6 on the season and they need to win their final three games to be bowl eligible.

Louisiana Tech looks for its first six-win season since 2019 when the Bulldogs visit Delaware.

Southeastern Louisiana looks to continue their push for an FCS playoff berth as the Lions visit Lamar. Also this Saturday, McNeese is at East Texas A-and-M, Nicholls visits UT Rio Grande Valley, Northwestern State hosts UIW and Grambling hosts Bethune Cookman.

And if you think Monday morning will be cold, Stigger says it’s going to be even colder Tuesday morning, with the possibility of temperatures dipping below freezing in some areas.

If you think that weather is unusual for Louisiana, especially for this time of year, Stigger says you’re absolutely right.

But if you can survive those two mornings, temperatures will begin their climb back to normal during the day Tuesday, returning to the 70s by the middle of the week.

This may be a lost season for the LSU football team, but it’s a memorable one for a certain freshman on the marching band. After retiring as an accountant, 66-year-old Kent Broussard pursued – and fulfilled – his lifelong dream of playing in the LSU marching band. Broussard appeared on the Kelly Clarkson Show this week and said he was nearly a half-century out of practice when he hatched his plan to join the LSU marching band.

So now that he had his Sousaphone and was practicing, he had to apply for admission like anyone else, most of whom are high school seniors. And when he made it through the tedious admissions process, he had to submit a YouTube video just to be invited to preseason camp.

Broussard says all 12 freshman Sousaphone players, including himself, made the team – and after the rest of the Sousaphonists and drummers celebrated with him, it was time to tell his family.

Broussard and the rest of the Golden Band from Tigerland will be in Tuscaloosa as the Tigers take on the Crimson Tide Saturday night.

The Louisiana Renaissance Festival continues this weekend in Hammond; and this weekend, fairgoers are in for a very special – and death-defying – performance from Cy the Sword Swallower. Cyrus Penn says he got the inspiration to take up sword swallowing when he needed something to do with his life upon graduating from college with a theater arts degree.

Penn says it should go without saying that his performance is something that no one should even think of trying at home!

Louisiana ranks 31st in the Tax Foundation’s State Tax Competitiveness Index — up from 37th. Tax Foundation Senior Policy Analyst Manish Bhatt (“bot”) expects the state’s ranking to improve in 2026, as the franchise tax will be repealed. He says modernizing a state’s tax structure helps position it for growth.

The trucking industry in Louisiana says insurance and lawsuit abuse are its biggest concerns in 2025. Renee Amar, the executive director of the Louisiana Motor Transport Association, says the cost of insurance is driving truckers out of the state.

Amar says the tort reform legislation approved in the last regular legislative session did not go far enough. She would have liked to see a medical transparency legislation get approved.

It will be warm today and tomorrow and then a major cold front hits the state, providing us with our first freeze on Monday and Tuesday. Dan Gill, host of the Garden Show on WWL Radio, says you don’t have to take extreme measures to protect your plants….

Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson is a Heisman candidate as he’s thrown 20 touchdowns and only one interception this year. LSU Interim head football coach Frank Wilson says Simpson possesses an elite skillset.

It looks like LSU will not have star linebacker Whit Weeks for a third consecutive game as he’s listed as doubtful with a bone bruise on his ankle.

In high school football…Ruston could look up a top seed in Division One non-select with a win tonight over West Monroe. Westgate likely secured a first round home playoff game by beating Comeaux 42-7. And Westminister Catholic will be your top seed in Division Four select after beating St. Edmund 37-22.
