We continue to see signs that major professional sports are gearing up for a return. The governors in California, New York, and Texas all say they are ready for professional sporting contests without fans. Texas says they could hold games as early as May 31st.

The NBA has talked about resuming its season by holding games in Las Vegas and Orlando. But Pelicans executive vice president David Griffin says the league is not dismissing the possibility of playing games in teams’ home arenas…

The Pels practiced facility reopened yesterday. Griffin says seven players on the roster showed up in two different groups.

The NFL is reportedly looking at changes with its Rooney Rule in an effort to get more minorities in head coaching and coordinator positions. Sources say the proposed changes would require teams to interview at least two minority candidates outside of the organization for a head coaching job and one minority candidate must be interviewed for a coordinator’s spot.

LSU added its 11th commitment to the 2021 recruiting class today as four-star safety Khari Gee announced his verbal pledge to the Tigers. The Atlanta native chose LSU over Clemson. He’s rated as the ninth-best safety in the country.

LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri has told the Advocate that sophomore outfielder Drew Bianco has taken his name out of the NCAA transfer portal. But sophomore utility player C-J Willis is in the transfer portal.

College athletic departments are looking to make cuts and baseball is on the chopping block at a couple of places. Bowling Green is dropping its baseball program and Furman says it’s made the difficult decision to end its baseball program. The Paladins have been playing baseball since 1891.

The state health department has made public a list of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities where residents and staff have tested positive for COVID-19. Governor Edwards says you can find the list on LDH’s coronavirus webpage and click on the tab that says nursing homes

The figures show 863 nursing home residents have died after testing positive for the coronavirus. That’s 35-percent of all COVID-19 deaths.

The Pelicans practice facility is open to players today for the first time since March 20th, but there are restrictions in place. No more than four players can be in the facility at one time. Players can work out with one staff member, but not the head coach or an assistant. And the staff member who is working with the player must wear gloves if that person is rebounding for the player. The TV voice of the Pelicans Joel Myers believes the season will resume in July. New Orleans is 3.5 games out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference with 18 games left.

The Saints have announced the signing of running back Ty Montgomery. The former Stanford star was drafted as a wide receiver in 2015 but made the move to running back in Green Bay. He’s also played for the Ravens and Jets. In career 58 career games and 16 starts, he’s rushed for 1,035 yards and seven touchdowns. He’s also caught 120 passes for 982 yards. Montgomery can also return kicks.

And the LHSAA announces if a high school begins summer workouts before June 8th, it could result in the school being placed on probation, suspended, or fined.

A 27-year-old woman is dead and nine others are being treated at a hospital from severe weather that hit a rural area in northeast Acadia Parish last night. The one fatality took place on Prudence Highway north of Church Point.  Sheriff KP Gibson says a suspected tornado damaged several homes.

Gibson says the loss of life could have been much worse as many residents were unprepared for the impact of the severe weather.

The price of oil has rebounded to over 30 dollars a barrel after sinking to negative numbers just a month ago.

Dismukes says today’s notable spike was the result of new positive news related to vaccine development.

Oil started the year over 60 dollars a barrel, and while that is unlikely to return this year Dismukes says the industry can sustain at these prices.

An industry survey indicated producers were bracing for massive layoffs, but Dismukes says if prices stay over 35 a barrel we should only lose 5,000 of the state’s 35,000 oil workers.

Today’s prices in the low 30s represent a two month high for oil.

The search continues for the gunmen involved in a mass shooting that wounded 13 people in Bogalusa on Saturday night. Major Wendell O’ Berry says between 500 to 800 people gathered at an intersection to remember the life of Dominique James, who was recently murdered. O’ Berry says as the crowd grew shots were fired…

O’ Berry says 12 of the 13 victims were male and some are critically wounded.

Washington Parish Sheriff Randy Seal is calling on those that have information about shooting to come forward and talk to police, saying it is much more effective that marching in protest of the violence.

Governor Edwards is recommending to legislative leaders to use federal money to close a one-billion-dollar budget hole that’s been caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne says a portion of the rainy day fund can be used as well, leaving just 80-million dollars in cuts

Dardenne says most of the projected cuts would occur within the Louisiana Department of Health’s budget. He says many other agencies are taking a two-percent cut, including higher education and there’s also a possibility more cuts will be needed later this year if the economy doesn’t rebound

Dardenne says their proposal to lawmakers is to keep TOPS fully funded and they are not recommending a reduction in public school funding. Lawmakers have until July 1st to pass a budget, and it may take a June special session to get it done.

A woman is dead and two juveniles were taken to the hospital after a train collided with their stalled out vehicle in Webster Parish.

State Police Trooper Brent Hardy says 51-year-old Rebecca Woodard of Minden and one juvenile were attempting to push the vehicle when the train came into view.

Woodard was transported to the hospital where she later died. The juvenile in the vehicle sustained moderate injuries.

Hardy says Woodard and the juvenile had not managed to get the vehicle very far when the impact occurred.

Hardy says if your vehicle ever becomes stranded on the track, immediate exit and get all other passengers away from the vehicle, then call the number on the nearby white and blue sign.

Linebacker Donte Starks is no longer a member of the LSU football team. He played in three games last season as a true freshman. If you remember he was suspended from the team on February fifth after he was arrested in Marrero for the illegal possession of a concealed handgun. Starks said in a tweet that it wasn’t the arrest that got him booted from the team, it was his grades.

Bo Pelini is back as LSU’s defensive coordinator, the Tigers will also move to a four-three defensive front. Pelini says there are enough talented defensive ends on the roster to make the switch

LSU hopes to begin on-campus offseason workouts in June.

Ragin Cajuns athletics director Bryan Maggard tells the Daily Advertiser there are no plans to cut any of their sports programs. Other Group of Five schools are dropping programs, Bowling Green in the MAC is ending its baseball program.

High schools can not begin summer workouts until June 8th. The LHSAA says if they find a school that violates the rule, that school could be placed on probation, suspended, or fined.

Eleven Office of Motor Vehicle locations reopen today to provide limited services, such as renewing a driver’s license or I-D cards, ordering a duplicate title, renewing vehicle registrations and title transfers. Casinos can also reopen today, but maximum capacity can not exceed 25-percent.

Movie theaters can reopen under Phase One guidelines, but most remain closed. Brooke Thorington explains.

A suspected tornado near Church Point reportedly injured at least nine people and damaged several homes in rural Acadia Parish last night. Authorities say the injuries range from minor to severe. There’s also suspected tornado damage in the Mamou and Eunice areas.

The state only reported 12 COVID-19 deaths yesterday bringing the state’s death toll to 2,425.

Casinos and video poker parlors can re-open today. The state has been without gaming revenue since mid-March. Casino Association of Louisiana executive director Wade Duty says they are optimistic players will visit Louisiana casinos and they should get out of state visitors too…

A Gonzales man who shot at East Baton Rouge Sheriff Deputies following a routine traffic stop is dead. 39-year-old Bernard Ledlow was fatally shot by deputies yesterday to conclude a six-hour search for him in a wooded area. One deputy was treated and released after a bullet grazed his leg. Ledlow was released from federal prison in January after serving a 17-year sentence on gun and drug charges.
