Eight teenagers were injured early Monday morning when shots were fired at a graduation party taking place at a Lake Charles business with about 200 unsupervised teenagers in attendance. Calcasieu Parish Sheriff deputies are still searching for two suspects, while one of the gunman was shot in the stomach. The seven other teens injured suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Lawmakers will consider a number of non-budgetary items in the June special session designed to provide financial relief for people and businesses suffering from the shutdown. Senate GOP Caucus Chairwoman Sharon Hewitt of Slidell says one big topic of conversation will be the potential elimination or suspension of the state’s corporate franchise tax.

A State Police trooper severely injured when he was hit by a Hammond Police vehicle last week during a police chase has succumbed to his injuries. 33-year-old Trooper George Baker was removing a tire-deflating device from the road when he was struck. Troop L spokesperson Jeremy Price says Baker started with the L-S-P in 2017 and was a model trooper.

Baker is survived by his wife Heather, their young daughter Harper, his parents, sisters, and his extended family.

Republican legislative leadership has issued its own call for a special session that’s set to begin when the regular session ends next Monday. The call features 41 items. A bill that would expand concealed handgun access in churches is halfway through the legislative process. The measure would allow a concealed carry holder to bring a gun into a place of worship if the church leader approves. Stonewall Representative Larry Bagley voted for the bill in the House, but raised concerns that the legislation removes from an existing law that requires an additional eight hours of tactical training in order to bring a gun into a church…

The House-approved measure is awaiting more discussion in the Senate.

The state reported a big jump in coronavirus cases on Memorial Day, 640 more positive tests. But officials say the spike is the result of a server issue impacted their ability to count cases on Saturday and Sunday. The number of deaths also increased by 18 yesterday.

The New Orleans Pelicans season could be over. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reports there’s a good chance that when the NBA season resumes the league will jump right into the postseason. And the top eight teams in each conference would make the playoffs and then they would be reseeded one to 16 based on their record. When the season was halted, the Pels were in tenth place in the Western Conference, 3.5 games back of the Grizzlies who have the eighth-best record in the West.

Yesterday was supposed to be selection Monday for college baseball and today we would be breaking down the regional that LSU would play in. D-1 baseball-dot-com came out with a bracket and they had LSU as a two-seed in the Miami regional. Northwestern State and Tulane also made the Field of 64 and they would play in the Starkville Regional.

LSU Senior pitcher Matthew Beck is LSU’s representative of the 2020 S-E-C Community Service team. The Alexandria native has been heavily involved in community service.

Former Northwestern State football assistant coach Gerald Howse has passed away at the age of 28. A cause of death was not given. He spent the last two seasons as the Demons running backs coach. He joined the Tennessee Tech football program in January.

Former NBA great Patrick Ewing is out of the hospital and recovering from COVID-19 at home. Ewing is 57-years-old and now coaches Georgetown.

The Match drew huge TV ratings on Sunday. The golf match between Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning versus Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady attracted an average of 5.8 million viewers for Turner Sports and its four networks. Turner says it was the most-watched golf telecast in cable TV history.

Major League Baseball and its players’ association begin serious negotiations today on how much players will get paid if they return to the field this season and play an 82-game schedule. The players reportedly would be okay with deferring part of their salary to next year to help owners who are having cash flow problems.

A House-approved bill that would expand concealed handgun access in churches is awaiting debate in the Senate. Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning won yesterday’s entertaining celebrity golf match over Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady that raised 20-million dollars for COVID-19 relief funds. Woods didn’t miss a fairway and Manning made a big bridie putt early in the match to put the duo up by three, they eventually won by one. Brady had the shot of the day as he holed one in from the fairway on the seventh hole.
Several went on social media to take shots at Brady’s game as he got off to a rough start, before that remarkable shot. Saints Coach Sean Payton said on Twitter he’s liking this Florida Tom Brady right now.

Saints Quarterback Drew Brees also went on Instagram saying he and Sergio Garcia would like to challenge the winner of yesterday’s Match event.

In NASCAR, Brad Keselowski, who started in the back of the field, won the Coca-Cola 600 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson finished second, extending his losing streak to 102 races.

This is a big week for Major League Baseball if they want to begin its season around the fourth of July. The owners and the players association are expected to discuss an economic plan that will determine how much the players will get paid this season. The owners have suggested a 50-50 split, but the players have already said that’s a non-starter.

The NBA has announced its in exploratory conversations with Disney in Orlando as the place to resume the league’s season in late July 20. The games would be played at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex. It’s unclear if every team will participate. It’s possible the NBA will start up by just going into the playoffs. When the season was halted, the New Orleans Pelicans were 3.5 games back of Memphis for eighth place in the West.

24-7-sports reports that former Texas senior defensive linemen Gerald Wilbon has committed to Louisiana Tech. Wilbon will be eligible right away for the Bulldogs. Wilbon played in just three games for the Bulldogs last season.

State Police is mourning the loss of one its troopers. George Baker has died from the injuries he sustained last week during a police chase in Hammond. Baker was hit by a Hammond Police car as he and another trooper were removing a tire-deflating device from the road. Baker was 33-years-old. The suspects in the police chase have been arrested.

Republican legislative leadership has called for the Legislature to begin a special session one minute after the regular session ends June 1st to address 41 items dealing with the budget and other fiscal matters pushed by business lobbyists. Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says the additional time may give them a clearer picture of the state’s finances.

Billy Nungesser is encouraging Louisiana residents to explore their state over the holiday weekend.  Louisiana’s state parks have canceled all out of state bookings through phase one and Nungesser says now is the time for locals to check them out because there is something for every member of the family.

The statewide average for a gallon of gas sits at 1.63 heading into Memorial Day weekend.

Despite the low price Fuel Analyst Don Redman does not expect the roads to be packed as the list of travel destinations is limited right now.

In 2019 the U.S. set a record for Memorial Day travel.

Redman says Memorial Day gas prices haven’t been this low since the Bush Administration.

If you are driving into Texas or Mississippi the average for a gallon there is actually a few cents lower, while those headed to Florida will be greeted by prices at 1.87 a gallon.

Redman expects this to be the last holiday weekend that prices will be this low, and by the 4th of July…

The price for a barrel of crude oil is hovering in the low 30s after dipping into the negatives a month ago.

The Crisis Counseling Text Line is now active in Louisiana for residents who need help coping with the mental stress of the pandemic.

GOHSEP Preparedness Section Chief Rubby Douglas says all you have to do is text reach out in all caps, one word to 741-741 to get help 24 hours a day.

The money to run the text line comes from the feds.

There are crisis call centers already active but Douglas says not everyone is comfortable voicing their fears to another person.

If additional help is needed those on the text line may refer the texter to the appropriate behavioral health provider.

The Crisis Counseling Text Line is different from 211 which focuses on providing medical information to people about COVID-19 and the spread of coronavirus.

The SEC announces student-athletes can resume on-campus workouts at their schools starting on June eighth, but there will be stringent health protocols in place. LSU’s Executive Deputy Athletics Director, Verge Ausberry, says they’ve been preparing to welcome football players back next month

The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 is down to 867. Governor John Bel Edwards says the hospitalization rate for this disease is at its lowest level since the end of March. Edwards says the state has also been supplied with thousands of viles of Remdesivir, a drug known to reduce the hospital stay of COVID-19 patients

Edwards says the state is also boosting up its contact tracing efforts. Republican lawmakers have expressed concerns that the state will mandate people to participate if they get a call from a contact tracer. The state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reports a significant spike in fishing license sales since COVID restrictions went in place. LDWF spokesperson Ed Pratt says there was a 53-percent increase in the sale of basic fishing licenses in April and saltwater licenses are also up over last year…
