Louisiana’s death toll from Hurricane Laura is up to 14 and more than half of the fatalities are from carbon monoxide poisoning from portable generators. State Fire Marshal Butch Browning says gas-powered generators produce carbon monoxide which is odorless and colorless

Browning says when using a generator, it should be at least 20 feet away from your home…

Browning says it’s also important to avoid trying to refuel a generator when it’s still hot…

Beauregard Electric Co-op tells its customers to be prepared to be without power for at least the next four weeks.  Co-op spokesperson Danielle Tilley says they’ve brought in 500-600 additional storm restoration workers to cut trees, reset poles and make repairs to more than 5,700 miles of line.

Tilley says substations and transmission lines will be repaired first and then service lines, but substations will not be able to receive power until its larger transmission lines are functioning again.

Tilley says with the level of damage received from the storm, some customers may be out of power even longer than four weeks.

Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter says his city will need a lot of outside help to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Laura. Hunter is calling for people from across the nation to donate to causes aimed at helping the city and its residents.

He says most of all the city will need a tremendous amount of federal aid.

Early estimates say it could take four weeks for power to be restored to Lake Charles. Hunter feels even that is a bit optimistic.

Hunter did note a silver lining to this tragedy: it appears the people of his city took the mandatory evacuation order very seriously.

52,500 homeowners so far have applied for FEMA assistance in the six parishes currently designated for relief.

FEMA Region Six Administrator Tony Robinson says the first step in the road to recovery for homeowners is to seek assistance from your insurance company.

Those in Calcasieu, Cameron, Jefferson Davis, Vernon, Allen, and Beauregard Parishes can apply currently, with the list of eligible parishes expected to grow in the near future. So far FEMA has conducted over 200 inspections on homes, resulting in over 650,000 dollars in assistance.

Robinson says after you contact your home insurer and get your settlement documentation, upload that in the FEMA app, or send it in via the method that was provided to you when you registered.

Robinson says some people have already begun receiving denials. He says that is linked to a lack of proper documentation from your home insurer, or lack of documentation proving your identity.

Robinson says there’s a number of ways to submit your application for FEMA aid.

About 44,000 northwest and central Louisiana SWEPCO customers are still without power, but the timeline for restoration has been moved up a day.

Swepco spokesperson Carey Sullivan says restoration for nearly all Bossier City and Haughton residents is expected tonight by 10 PM, with Shreveport and Mansfield expected back online by tomorrow night.

Hornbeck, Natchitoches, and Logansport customers will have to wait until Thursday night.

Sullivan says about 10,000 customers in the Shreveport-Bossier are without power along with 34,000 in central Louisiana.

136,000 of their customers were without power during the peak of the post-Laura period.

The state reports 324-thousand Louisiana customers are without power.

There is some good news when it comes to power outages. SWEPCO says estimated times of restoration for north Louisiana has been moved up a full day. Most customers should have power restored in Bossier City and Haughton by 10 PM tonight and by 5:00 in Shreveport tomorrow. SWEPCO spokesperson Carey Sullivan says they have about 44-thousand customers without power in Louisiana…

LSU star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase is reportedly opting out of the 2020 college football season so that he’ll be fully healthy for the 2021 draft, where he’s expected to be a top-five pick. Chase’s departure means Terrace Marshall Junior and Racey McMath will be LSU’s top two receivers. Football analyst Mike Detillier says there are young wideouts who will also be asked to step up

Former LSU running back Leonard Fournette has been released by the Jaguars. Fournette had some good and bad times at Jacksonville and ended up rushing for 2,631 yards and 17 touchdowns in 3 seasons. But management has also expressed concerns about his attitude and behavior.

Believe it or not, we are 13 days away from the Saints season opener in Tampa Bay. Coach Sean Payton says with the start of the regular season right around the country, it’s more important than ever to avoid any COVID-19 cases…

The Saints have placed running back Dwayne Washington on the reserve COVID-19 list. Washington participated in practice on Saturday, but just because a player is put on this list, doesn’t mean a player has tested for the positive the virus. It could be that the player believes they were exposed or it could be the result of a false-positive test result.

ULM will resume football activities today. The team has had limited workout time over the last ten days because they had nine positive COVID cases within the program. ULM’s season opener is September 12th at Army.

Former LSU running back Leonard Fournette is looking for a new team as the Jacksonville Jaguars have released the former first-round pick.

And in St. Tammany Parish, three people were found dead in a home in Pearl River. They’ve been identified as 80-year-old Lawrence Lynchard, 75-year-old Barbara Lynchard, and 48-year-old Debra Lynchard. An autopsy will determine the cause of deaths and the investigation is ongoing.

The number of Hurricane Laura related deaths is up to 14 after a 57-year-old man in Calcasieu Parish died from a head injury after falling from a roof. Another resident in Calcasieu Parish died from carbon monoxide poisoning. The state health department has verified eight Hurricane Laura-related deaths to carbon monoxide poisoning. Governor Edwards says for those residents who do not have power, he’s pleading with them not to run generators in their home…

The recovery continues today in hot conditions. North and southwest Louisiana are under a heat advisory. And the National Hurricane Center is monitoring four disturbances in the tropics, but none of them are a threat to Louisiana.

Tulane researchers have been awarded a 150,000 dollar grant to begin making a second-generation COVID-19 vaccine. A first-generation vaccine is not available yet, but Tulane Microbiologist Dr. Lisa Morici says the sooner version 2.0 is available the better.

Auburn returns to practice today without 16 players. Nine of them tested positive for the coronavirus and contact tracing has put seven others in a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

ULM resumes football activities today after holding limited workouts over the last ten days after nine positive coronavirus tests.

The Saints practiced in the Superdome on Saturday night and during the seven on seven-period, Quarterback Drew Brees connected with wide receiver Michael Thomas on a couple of long passes. Coach Sean Payton says it appears Brees’ arm strength is stronger this year…

The Saints have signed defensive ends T-J Carter and Anthony Lanier the Second along with linebacker Wynton McManis. McManis played the last three seasons in the Canadian Football League. Lanier was with the Chargers last season, while Carter is an undrafted free agent out of Kentucky.

Today is the Major League Baseball Trade Deadline, and former LSU Tiger Austin Nola has been traded from Seattle to the San Diego Padres, who have the third-best record in the National League.

In response to Hurricane Laura, Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser urges Louisianans to volunteer to help rebuild areas damaged by the Category 4 storm. Nungesser is confident the state will recover because citizens came together in 2016 after the flood and rebuilt 15 years ago after Hurricane Katrina.

Edwards says the state went from a peak of 600-thousand outages following Hurricane Laura to 375-thousand as of noon Sunday. The governor reports there are over 17-thousand people from 29 states working on getting the power restored.

Residents in Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, Jefferson Davis and Vernon Parish can apply for disaster aid through FEMA by going to disaster-assistance-dot-gov, calling their 1-800-621-FEMA or through the FEMA app. Edwards says so far more than 52-thousand people in Louisiana have applied and he expects additional parishes will become eligible

Saints held their first practice in the Superdome on Saturday in what was a dress rehearsal for the season opener on September 13th against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. There were no fans in the stands for the practice and there will be no fans in the Dome for the season opener. Coach Sean Payton says he’s not sure what it will feel like on game day with no fans

The season opener is less than two weeks away and so far the team has been able to avoid any COVID cases since training camp started. Payton hopes that will continue

Members of the LSU football team marched through campus today as the players say its time to stand up for racial justice. This week we’ve seen several sports teams hold demonstrations in the wake of the shooting of Jacob Blake, a black man shot in the back seven times in Wisconsin by police officers in Kenosha.

Today, LSU football players gathered outside of Tiger Stadium and marched to the university president’s office where they spoke with interim president Thomas Galligan. In a post on Twitter, Galligan thanked LSU student-athletes for speaking up and the university stands with them against racism and inequality. U-L Lafayette also held a march to protest social injustice.

Saints and Pelicans owner Gayle Benson has tested positive for the Coronavirus. Saints spokesperson Greg Bensel says Benson has developed some symptoms but is doing fine and recovering at home.

There are reports the Big 10 may start its football season around Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, LSU is four weeks away from its season opener against Mississippi State. The SEC announced today that if there is a season, only essential personnel will be allowed on the sidelines, so that means no on-field band performances.

The Conference USA announced game times for their football games this season. The Bulldogs league opener against Southern Miss on September 19th will kick off at 6:30 on ESPN-plus. The home opener the next week against Houston Baptist will kick off at 6 PM, so will the next home game on October 10th versus UTEP. A game time for the September 12th season opener against Baylor hasn’t been announced. That will come from the Big 12.

The NBA playoffs will resume tomorrow as there will be three games, starting with the Bucks versus the Magic at 2:30. It was Milwaukee who started the sport team boycotts when they decided not to play on Wednesday.
