The high school football season will kick-off on October 1st and schools will play an eight-game regular season with the state championship games taking place December 26th to the 28th in the Superdome. No football game for Louisiana Tech on Saturday at Baylor because of a COVID-19 outbreak within the Bulldogs team. Coach Skip Holtz says they’ve had 36 players test positive since Hurricane Laura. Holtz says if the infected players do not have any complications that show up on an EKG, that up to 30 of the 36 players could return in time to play their next scheduled game on September 19th against Southern Miss.

No fans in the Dome for Sunday’s Saints game against the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay wide receiver Mike Evans was not at practice yesterday because of a soft tissue injury and he’ll be a game-time decision on Sunday. For the Saints, rookie offensive linemen Cesar Ruiz, and defensive end Marcus Davenport did not practice yesterday.

Louisiana Tech Football Coach Skip Holtz confirmed today that his team had 36 players test positive for the coronavirus since Hurricane Laura roared through Ruston. Holtz says because of the number of positive tests they are not able play Baylor on Saturday in a game that was set to be on Fox Television…

Holtz is hopeful they can play on September 19th against Conference USA foe Southern Miss. The coach says power outages caused by Laura led to players finding other places to sleep which has led to the outbreak in cases.

The LHSAA executive committee votes that football teams can begin contact practices tomorrow and the start of the season has been moved up to October 1st through the third.

The program will run in phases, with the first phase beginning tomorrow in Acadia, Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, Jefferson Davis, Rapides, Vermilion, and Vernon.  Shavana Howard with DCFS explains what eligible recipients should do…

Howard urges anyone who lives in the 16 parishes impacted by Hurricane Laura to pre-register online first and then call in according to their last name on certain days to apply. A list of days can be found on the DCFS website.

Howard says they will roll out benefits to the remaining seven parishes beginning September 17th and storm victims are encouraged to the DCFS website for information about eligibility. Howard says they are working with other state agencies to streamline the registration process.

Saturdays will look much different at Tiger Stadium this fall LSU announces there will be no pre-game walk down Victory Hill, the Tiger band will not perform on the field, no tailgating, and attendance will be capped at 25%.  Interim LSU President Thomas Galligan says attendees need to prepare to mask up.

Despite a smaller crowd, Galligan is confident the energy of Tiger Stadium will still be there.

Single-game tickets will not be available, so the fans that get to go to the games will be season-ticket holders, students, and a small number of fans from the visiting school.  Athletic Director Scott Woodward says the fans will enter the stadium in phases.

The state Republican Party calls on Governor Edwards to allow parish governments to make their own decisions on whether or not to move into Phase Three.

LA GOP spokesperson Ben Smith says the current one size fits all statewide plan isn’t allowing areas with manageable levels of COVID-19 to restart their economies. He says it should be up to the locals.

Smith says local governments should also have the ability to decide whether to implement mask mandates, gathering limits, and bar closures.

Smith says many areas of the state have plenty of hospital capacity and low transmission rates.

Governor John Bel Edwards says Laura damaged or destroyed over one-thousand power transmission towers, but the federal government is allowing Louisiana to use power generated in Texas

Lousiana Tech’s season opener at Baylor on Saturday has been postponed as a result of a COVID-19 outbreak within the Bulldog football team. There are media reports that say 38 players on the Tech football team tested positive for the coronavirus. Athletics Director Tommy McClelland says the coronavirus outbreak is the result of players staying with others, because of the power outages from Hurricane Laura. The two schools will look to re-schedule the game, meanwhile, the Bulldogs are hoping they can play next week at Southern Miss.

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association executive committee has approved a motion that allows full contact football drills to take place in Phase two of the state’s COVID-19 reopening. But New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has said no contact sports are allowed in her city during Phase 2, so unclear if football can be played in the Crescent City.

LSU Football Coach Ed Orgeron announces that defensive end Ray Parker has been suspended indefinitely from the football team for a violation of team rules. Parker was a redshirt freshman last season after a standout prep career at Ruston High School.

Former Nicholls cornerback Darren Evans has joined the LSU football team as a graduate transfer. Evans was a two and a half year starter for the Colonels and a second-team All-Southland Conference selection in 2018. Evans prepped at Glen Oaks High School in Baton Rouge.

If you watch the national news, you’ll hear about the California wildfires, but nothing about the difficult recovery from Hurricane Laura in Lake Charles as most of Calcasieu Parish remains without power. Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter says there’s a lot of groups and organizations helping, but since the response has not been a train wreck, it doesn’t make for an interesting story nationally…

New Orleans Police say two Lake Charles evacuees have been arrested for their role in a fatal shooting that took place on Canal Street yesterday afternoon. The victim is also a Laura evacuee. One of the suspects was reportedly on bond for a Memorial Day shooting that injured seven people at an unsupervised teen party in Lake Charles.

Governor Edwards is expected to make an announcement either today or tomorrow on whether the state can move into Phase 3 of coronavirus pandemic restrictions. Edwards has received criticism for his handling of the pandemic, but the governor says he does not have any second thoughts…

Lake Charles and the community’s response to Hurricane Laura has fallen out of the national media spotlight and it has left many of its residents feeling forgotten. Mayor Nic Hunter says the story of resilience is one that apparently doesn’t appeal to national media outlets.

Hunter says maybe if the local response to the disaster was a train wreck, the level of lasting national media attention would be different. But he’s proud of how Lake Charles and the state have come together to rebuild their city.

The Hammond City Council has voted for a measure that urges Mayor Pete Panepinto to remove Edwin Bergeron as the city’s police chief. A video from 2017 has surfaced that shows Bergeron, who was a booking sergeant at the time, involved in a violent arrest of a black man. Mayor Panepinto has said he has no plans to terminate Bergeron.

A coronavirus outbreak involving numerous football players at Louisiana Tech has resulted in the postponement of the Bulldogs season opener against Baylor on Saturday.

The LHSAA Executive Committee meets today and the panel will announce the official start date for high school football and it’s expected to be October 8th.

A senior at Pine High School in Washington Parish is taking his local superintendent and the school board to court after his painting of President Trump was covered up with paint. Ned Thomas says he received permission from the principal to paint a stylized picture of the president, as part of the school system’s “Seniors Paint Your Parking Space” program, but Thomas says apparently some people objected to the paint job…

Thomas is seeking an injunction so that he can re-paint his picture. No comment from the Washington Parish School system.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says there are 14-point-six billion dollars in federal aid available for fishermen and others in the industry who have suffered financial losses because of the COVID-19 pandemic. LDWF biologist director Jason Duet says you must be able to demonstrate you’ve been in the industry as of 2018 or 2019…
