The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles has made significant progress in helping residents prepare for the May 7th REAL ID enforcement date. Acting Deputy Commissioner Matthew Boudreaux says over 1.2 million Louisianans have received a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or ID card through outreach efforts, expanded services, and public engagement.

Boudreaux says  OMV offices will continue issuing REAL IDs after the enforcement date.

Boudreaux encourages all residents to visit express-lane-dog-org to schedule an appointment and has a REAL ID checklist.

In 2025, Louisiana’s honeybee populations are experiencing their worst decline on record, with beekeepers reporting a staggering 60-percent loss in colonies. Louisiana Beekeepers Association VP Kevin Langley says this collapse threatens not only local ecosystems but also national food supplies, as bees play a crucial role in pollinating crops.

Langley attributes the decline to pesticide use, habitat loss, and disease—all of which weaken bee immune systems.

Langley says  there is hope. Farmers, researchers, and environmentalists are raising awareness and promoting bee-friendly practices such as pollinator gardens, limiting pesticide use during blooms, and preserving green spaces by cutting back on cutting your grass.

Small businesses are finding it harder to find quality workers to fill their job openings. The National Federation of Independent Business’ April jobs report showed that 34-percent of small businesses reported job openings that they could not fill. State Director Leah Long says this has been an issue that’s been going on for about a year.

Long says it’s not just skilled workers that small businesses are having trouble finding to fill their openings.

Long says there are two house bills making their way through the legislature that would address the need for small businesses to find qualified workers, including creating a one-door workforce policy.

Whooping cough cases continue their upward trend in Louisiana. State Epidemiologist Theresa Sokol says there have been 164 cases of whooping cough so far this year, already eclipsing 2024’s total of 153.

And Sokol says two infants have died from the illness. She says the trend is similar across the country, but it’s especially alarming in Louisiana.

Sokol says there are vaccines to protect people from whooping cough, and she especially urges certain women to get vaccinated.

Sokol says to take extra cautions when around newborns, because they cannot get a whooping cough vaccine until they’re two months old.

No LSU game last night because of inclement weather in College Station, so the Tigers and the Texas A-and-M Aggies will play a doubleheader today at 2 PM. LSU is 14-7 in the SEC and in position to receive a top eight national seed, while the Aggies need a strong finish to the regular season to make a Regional.

The Cajuns defeated Georgia State ten to five. Tate Hess struck out a career-high 10 hitters as he was outstanding out of the bullpen. Conner Higgs hit his 33rd career home run, moving into fifth place in school history.

Texas State topped ULM 12 to 2. The Bobcats scored eight runs in the second inning, Warhawks starting pitcher Zach Shaw gave up seven runs.

Tough loss for La Tech, the Bulldogs scored four runs in the eighth to tie the game at eight, but Western Kentucky won it in the bottom of the ninth 9-8.

Former Memphis guard P-J Carter has signed with the LSU men’s basketball team out of the transfer portal. Carter only averaged five points a game last season. LSU will be Carter’s fifth school since 2021.

Louisiana Tech has signed Scooter Williams. He was East Texas A-and-M’s leading scorer last season. The six-foot-five guard averaged 11 points a game for the Lions. He’s also played several seasons of college basketball.

The Ragin Cajuns will hold their spring football game today at 10 AM.

Grambling football will kick off the 2025 season in the Shreveport Classic in Independence Stadium on August 30th by playing Langston. The Tigers are 16-3 and-1 all time in the city of Shreveport

The state softball tournament was halted by severe thunderstorms yesterday in Sulphur, so they’ll continue with semifinal action today and championship games will take place on Sunday.

The tenth ranked LSU softball team won its 40th game of the season last night by thumping eighth ranked Arkansas 13 to 2.

Because of inclement weather in College Station, tonight’s LSU-Texas A-and-M baseball game has been pushed back to 8 PM. The Tigers enter the series with a 14-7 SEC record and feeling good about themselves after winning a series over Tennessee last weekend and a run-rule win over Southeastern Louisiana. The Aggies are fighting for their postseason lives as they are 8-and-13 and A-and-M was swept last weekend at Texas.

LSU men’s basketball has signed another player out of the transfer portal. The latest addition is Memphis guard P-J Carter, who averaged five points a game last season and shot 39-percent from three-point territory. Carter is six-foot-four and has been playing college hoops for while In 2023-24, he was at UTSA and prior to that two seasons at Georgia Highlands College and Campbell.

Two children were found locked in car seats inside a house in Webster Parish with no adult supervision, and one of them has died. Minden Police were called to the house mid-morning Thursday on a report of a two-year-old child being found unresponsive inside the house. The girl could not be resuscitated. Minden Police Chief Jared McIver says investigators are trying to determine exactly how the little girl died.

Chief McIver says investigators also want to know who was supposed to be home supervising the children.

McIver says this case is gut-wrenching to the entire community.

Voters in about half of Louisiana’s parishes will head to the polls Saturday to elect local officials and decide on various ballot proposals. Joel Watson with the Secretary of State’s office says several areas will hold runoff elections from earlier primaries, while others will vote on sales taxes, millages, bonds, and charter amendments.

Voters in Lake Charles will decide whether to re-elect Nic Hunter as mayor. He’s being challenged by Democrat Marshall Simien. There’s also a mayoral race in DeRidder. Watson says New Orleans area voters also have items on their ballot..

Watson says polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

Advocates gathered outside the State Capitol this week to draw attention to food insecurity. Pat VanBurkleo, the executive director of Feeding Louisiana, says they especially wanted to let state lawmakers know that many things affect hunger

VanBurkleo says one thing that doesn’t nearly get enough attention is hunger on college campuses.

Crawfish prices are at their lowest level of the season, according to the Crawfish-App. Co-founder of the Crawfish App, Laney King, says May is usually when we see the lowest prices…

King says in the days following Easter, crawfish prices dropped 50-cents per pound and they’ve held steady entering the first weekend of May. She consumers can purchase a sack of crawfish for under 100-dollars…

(Boiled crawfish is going for around 4.89 a pound.)

The Coast Guard has been brought in to help control an oil spill off Plaquemines Parish. Tens of thousands of gallons of oil have uncontrollably gushed out of an old well off the coast. Coast Guard Lieutenant Phillip VanderWeit says crews are working non-stop to get the leak under control.

Lieutenant VanderWeit acknowledges that this is a serious spill.

VanderWeit says the two main jobs are to get the source of the spill under control and to mitigate the impacts to the environment.

Tour guides in the area say oil spills like this will cause further loss of land and, in effect, further loss of hurricane protection. The cause of the break is unclear, and it’s also unknown how long it will take to plug the well and clean up the contamination.

The second-ranked LSU baseball team begins a three-game series tonight against the Texas A&M Aggies. The Tigers are third in the SEC in pitching with a team ERA of 3.75 and second in hitting, with a team batting average of .312. Former LSU star and ESPN college baseball analyst Todd Walker says LSU’s offense is more than good enough to win it all…

Alexandria Senior High Football star J-T Lindsey is the 2025 Warrick Dunn Award winner. The award goes to the state’s best high school football player and ten finalists are recognized by the LHSAA Network. Lindsey led the ASH Trojans to an undefeated regular season and a trip to the state championship game. He says he’ll never forget his senior season…

Lindsey rushed for just under 25-hundred yards and 33 touchdowns.

The semi-finals of the state softball tournament are today in Sulphur. The LHSAA Network will televise three games, starting at noon with Notre Dame versus D’arbonne Woods. At 2:30 PM Brusly will battle Assumption and at 5 PM Mount Carmel faces St. Thomas More in a division one select semifinal. Tomorrow is championship Saturday and the LHSAA Network will televise the Division Three non select and Division Two select title games.

A Jefferson Parish jury took less than an hour to convict Bunnak Landon of first degree murder in the brutal death of six-year-old Bella Fontenelle of Harahan. Landon killed her boyfriend’s child and left her body in a buck on the child’s mother’s front lawn. Landon claimed she was insane at the time of the crime.

The Louisiana Legislature is debating a comprehensive nutrition bill that, among other things, would ban SNAP recipients from using their benefits to buy soft drinks Governor Jeff Landry is not waiting for that bill to reach his desk….

The only real power the executive order has is that it directs the Department of Children and Family Services to request a waiver from the USDA to prohibit food stamp recipients from buying soda and candy.

Today there will be a crawfish eating contest today. Contestants will try to eat two and a half pounds of crawfish as fast as they can.

The Minden Police Department is investigating the death of a two-year-old child who was locked into a child seat inside a home. It’s unknown how long the toddler was left unattended. Authorities say it’s possible the two-year-old was  choked because of how she was fastened into the car seat.

 

Another hurricane season begins June 1st and the National Hurricane Center says it continues to improve its forecasting. Director Michael Brennan says one area of improvement is predicting rapid intensification of a storm…

Brennan says this year, the National Hurricane Center will produce an official forecast track for unnamed storms as early as 72 hours in advance before that system grows into a hurricane and impacts coastal areas.

The biggest crawfish festival in the state starts today. The Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival runs through Sunday, and Publicity Director Angelique (AHN-zhu-leek) Bernard says you can get crawfish prepared in many ways.

Democrats in the Louisiana Legislature oppose the idea of restricting SNAP recipients from using their cash assistance to purchase of soda.

There was enough opposition in the House Natural Resources Committee to kill a bill that would give parish governments the ability to permit carbon sequestration wells in their parish. Locals are concerned about the environmental impacts, but LSU law professor Keith Hall testified the Louisiana Department of Energy and Natural Resources should be the agency that permits these projects…

There’s an enhanced risk for severe weather for all of north Louisiana, most of central Louisiana and a part of southwest Louisiana for this afternoon and into tonight. Forecasters say we could see damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes can not be ruled out.

The House Natural Resources Committee has voted down a bill that would have allowed parishes to vote on whether to permit carbon sequestration wells in their areas. There was passionate testimony on both sides, including from 16-year-old Avery Williams, who expressed concerns about storing carbon dioxide below ground…

Industry leaders expressed concern this bill would complicate permitting and hinder a growing industry where carbon dioxide emissions are captured from the air and stored underground.
