And Delta has already helped produced large rainfall totals in the Baton Rouge area. Nearly nine inches of rain fell in Zachary as a result of a cluster of storms. A band of heavy rain has also moved through St. Tammany and Washington Parishes this morning.

Both Entergy and Cleco have thousand of additional workers on standby to respond to power outages from Hurricane Delta. Cleco spokesperson Jennifer Cahill says trees that were not damaged during Hurricane Laura are still vulnerable and with Delta trailing so close behind, they might not survive a second storm. Cahill says Cleco is ready to respond…

Governor John Bel Edwards has announced the Phase Three COVID-19 mitigation measures, including the statewide mask mandate, will remain the same through November sixth. The announcement comes as there is an aggressive effort by Republican lawmakers to limit his authority over issuing emergency orders. It’s moving north at 12 miles per hour but will turn towards the northeast and pass near Alexandria into northeast Louisiana as a tropical storm on Saturday. Hurricane Delta is expected to create widespread power outages, but hopefully not to the extent of what we saw after Hurricane Laura when over a half-million customers were without electricity. Entergy CEO Phillip May says about 75-percent of towers and transmission systems have been replaced with equipment to now withstand winds of 140-150 to miles per hour…

Governor John Bel Edwards is keeping the current Phase Three coronavirus public health restrictions in place until November 6th. That includes the statewide mask mandate. Edwards says the current mitigation measures have been able to keep the state’s case count and hospitalizations down, even with most businesses expanding operations.

Hurricane Delta is moving closer to the southwestern Louisiana coast and its expected to make landfall tonight near the Cameron-Vermilion Parish line. National Weather Service Meteorologist Ben Schott warns that the system is growing in size and it is likely we will see hurricane-force winds stretching from Lake Charles to Baton Rouge.

Storm surge could be as high as eleven feet from Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge to Morgan City, including Vermilion Bay. Once Delta makes landfall it will move north-north-east across the state with the center of the storm moving over central Louisiana as a tropical storm. Avoyelles Parish Emergency Preparedness director Joey Frank says potential flooding issues have caught the attention of the locals.

The State Fire Marshal’s office is urging generator safety ahead of Hurricane Delta after there were multiple carbon monoxide deaths that occurred after Hurricane Laura. State Fire Marshal says to avoid carbon monoxide getting in your home do not place generators inside any structure including garages, carports and sheds.

Acadia Sheriff KP Gibson says he’s already seen residents in the flood-prone southern portion of the parishes leaving, and they’re moving inmates out of the parish into facilities in north Louisiana…

Hurricane Delta continues its approach towards the Louisiana coast. National Weather Service Lake Charles meteorologist Chanelle Stigger says exactly six weeks after Laura clobbered the area, they are bracing for round two. The storm track has shifted west over the last few days, but landfall in Cameron is more likely now.

Stigger says the biggest problem appears to be wind damage with sustained speeds of 90-100 miles per hour, with gusts up to 120, but Delta will bring other issues.

Stigger says although the storm is not expected to be a major hurricane at landfall, southwest Louisiana is still a compromised and Delta is making things much worse.

Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter says he can’t believe another hurricane is set to strike the city again, but you can’t let fatigue keep people from taking this storm seriously.  Hunter is urging Lake Charles residents to get out.
