In addition to drug maker Pfizer’s announcement last week that their COVID vaccine is 90-percent effective, on Monday, Moderna released news that their vaccine has a 95 percent effectiveness rate.

Associate Professor at Tulane’s School of Medicine Dr. Lisa Morici said the FDA indicated that the benchmark for success would be a 50-percent efficacy rate for a vaccination in stage three clinical trials.

Morici says she’s cautiously optimistic as we are still waiting on safety and efficacy rates from a larger number of clinical trial participants, so far data that’s been submitted is from approximately 100 participants that have been assessed.

Morici says at this time we don’t know if the vaccine prevents transmission of the virus once you’ve been vaccinated.

Morici says they hope that the vaccine will remain effective for six months, a year or greater, but until time has passed the data is unavailable.

The city of New Orleans’ website says there will not be any Mardi Gras parades in 2021. The announcement caught many by surprise.  Director of Communications for Mayor LaToya Cantrell, Beau Tidwell, says the mayor has been consistent that Mardi Gras 2021 will have to look different because of the pandemic…

Tidwell says they are asking for input on how carnival season can be celebrated under the current guidelines of no gatherings larger than 250-persons. Carnival krewe captains have been asked to submit detailed plans on how they will comply with COVID-19 guidelines to the city by December 5th and the city will accept public input until December 4th.

A U-S-A today story says LSU did not follow federal law and school policy after receiving complaints of sexual misconduct and dating violence involving nine former football players, including Derrius Guice and Drake Davis, since Ed Orgeron took over as head coach in 2016. Orgeron says when allegations are made, they should be reported to the university’s Title Nine office.

There’s no official timetable on when Saints Quarterback Drew Brees will return to the field. It’s been reported he has several fractured ribs and collapsed lung.

The Pelicans have traded fan favorite and two-time All-Defensive member Jrue Holiday to the Milwaukee Bucks. In return, New Orleans receives Eric Bledsoe, George Hill, and three first-round draft picks.

LSU is getting ready to play Arkansas this Saturday after last Saturday’s game against Alabama was postponed. Will the Tigers and Crimson Tide still play each other? It will take the SEC reshuffling some games. Coach Ed Orgeron thinks it will happen…

ULM’s schedule has been shuffled around as the Warhawks will now play Arkansas State on December 5th. That game was originally scheduled for November 14th. The Warhawks will play Troy on December 17th, instead of December 12th.

But ULM starting quarterback Colby Suits will not play in those games as he’s decided to opt-out of the team’s final three games and enter the NCAA transfer portal. He’s started all games of a winless season. Suits is reportedly the 15th player to leave the program since March.

State lawmakers approved the sales tax holiday as a way to provide relief for Louisiana residents recovering Hurricanes Laura and Delta as well as a coronavirus pandemic. Saints Quarterback Drew Brees reportedly has multiple fractured ribs on both sides of his chest and a collapsed lung. According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, Brees actually fractured three ribs in the Tampa game and two more on Sunday in the win over San Francisco. ESPN is also reporting the most optimistic return is in two or three weeks, but the injuries could take much longer to heal.

A USA Today article highlights several cases of LSU mishandling sexual misconduct complaints against students. The report says LSU athletic officials received complaints about former running back Derrius Guice for over a year and at least seven LSU officials had direct knowledge former wide receiver Drake Davis was physically abusing his girlfriend. USA Today and LSU beat reporter, Glen Guilbeau says athletic director Scott Woodward needs to make sure future claims are properly investigated…

There is more promising news today regarding a potential COVID-19 vaccine. Moderna says early data shows its vaccine is nearly 95-percent effective. This comes on the heels of Pfizer saying that its vaccine is showing signs of being 90-percent effective. Former Governor Edwin Edwards is home after a two-night stay at a Baton Rouge hospital. Edwards went to Our Lady of the Lake on Friday, because of breathing issues, but it turns it out it was just a bad head cold. His biographer, Leo Honeycutt, says the 93-year-old has had bouts with pneumonia but remains a vibrant senior citizen.

The USA Today published a lengthy story today detailing cases where LSU may have looked the other way when it comes to allegations of sexual abuse against females involving LSU football players. Jameis Winston relieved Brees and led New Orleans on an important fourth quarter drive that ended in an Alvin Kamara touchdown, his third of the day. Kamara knew Winston would be ready…

Civil rights activists and the ACLU demand an independent investigation into the death of a 15-year-old Black male who was found dead in an Iberia Parish sugar cane field.

An Iberia Parish Coroner’s report concluded that Quawan “Bobby” Charles drowned and that damage to his face was caused by wildlife, but ACLU of Louisiana head Alanah Odoms believes it may have been a hate crime.

Charles’ body has been sent to an independent forensics lab in Texas. A report from that lab is expected soon.

Charles’ parents have expressed serious concern with the lack of transparency and the slow pace of the investigation. Odoms says the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Department has provided little information to the family…

Last week an Iberia Parish Sheriff’s spokesperson said the investigation is ongoing and there is little information that can be given out at this time, but the death is being investigated as a possible homicide.

Charles went missing on October 30th in Baldwin. Odoms says it’s highly frustrating that Baldwin Police did not contact State Police about putting out an Amber Alert after being contacted by Charles’ family.

Charles was found 20 miles away from his home in the field near Loreauville on November 3rd.

An article in the journal Nature claims hurricanes are keeping their staying power longer once they make landfall, thus more inland destruction. State Climatologist Barry Keim says we know once storms make landfall, they are cut off from their energy source of warm water.

Keim says the study showed the average length of time it took a storm to weaken to two-thirds of its landfall strength in the 1960s was about 17-hours.

Keim says a good example of longer staying power is Hurricane Laura, it made landfall as a Category 4 and was still at hurricane strength when it reached Shreveport 250-miles inland.

Keim says hurricanes are no longer seen as a coastal issue as warmer sea temperatures from climate change serve as an energy reservoir for storms.

The study compared 71 Atlantic hurricanes with landfalls as far back from 1967.

Governor Edwards says he’s concerned about the recent spike in COVID cases and indicated that if it were to continue the state may have to move back to Phase Two or more.

The US has shattered total new daily case records throughout November, leading to new restrictions and lockdowns elsewhere in the country. Edwards says he hopes that’s not needed here…

The Saints are seeking their sixth straight win on Sunday when they face the San Francisco 49ers. After appearing in the Super Bowl last season, the 49ers have been hit with a bunch of injuries and enter Sunday’s game with a four and five record. The Saints will also play in front of their biggest home crowd of the season as six-thousand fans will be allowed inside the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

The Cajuns can win a Sun Belt Western Division title on Saturday with a win over South Alabama. But the Pride of Acadiana will not be there as the school has suspended on-campus music-making activities because of the rising number of COVID cases on campus and that includes band members.

The SEC announces it will use December 19th as a date to make up games that need to be rescheduled. That’s the day for the SEC Championship game as well. But it also opens the door for the league to reschedule Saturday’s postponed game between LSU-and-Alabama. Athletic Director Scott Woodward says December fifth is a possibility and that means the Ole Miss game on that day would be played on December 19th.

Woodward says there is only a small number of players who have tested positive, but many more are in quarantine. He says none of the players who have tested positive for COVID, have experienced a serious illness…
