In the high school football playoffs last night, in Class 5A, 13th seeded Ruston went on the road and beat fourth seeded Ponchatoula 42-26. In Four-A, 12th seeded Minden defeated Leesville 21-14. The Crimson Tide will host fourth seeded Neville in the quarterfinals. The Tigers are in the quarterfinals for a 12th consecutive time as they defeated Westgate 53-34. In Two-A, 10th seeded Port Allen knocked off defending champion Ferriday 22-20. The Pelicans will face Mangham in the quarters. The Dragons defeated Kentwood 33-27.

For the first time ever, the Ragin Cajuns defeated Appalachian State as U-L Lafayette held on to beat the Mountainees 24-21. Trey Ragas (Ray-gus) rushed for two touchdowns and the defense held App State to less than 100 yards throwing. U-L Lafayette will now get ready to play Coastal Carolina in the Sun Belt title game in two weeks.

LSU’s defense is coming off its best game of the season last Saturday, but they face a huge challenge today when they host number one ranked Alabama, who is averaging 49 points a game. Defensive Coordinator Bo Pelini says it took time for him to learn the personnel and the players to learn his 4-3 system.

Alabama is almost a 30-point favorite to beat LSU tomorrow night in Tiger Stadium. LSU Defensive Coordinator Bo Pelini is impressed with Alabama’s offense which is led by Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Mac Jones, bruising running back Najee Harris and Louisiana’s own DeVonta Smith, who has 12 touchdowns.

Too bad LSU does not have Cam Jordan. The Saints defensive end was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Month for November. Jordan had five sacks last month as the defense as a whole has stepped up its game…

ULM is a three-touchdown underdog in tomorrow afternoon’s contest against Arkansas State. Based on the depth chart provided by the Warhawks, they only have 21 players available on defense.

Tulane closes out its regular season tomorrow at 11 AM by hosting Memphis. A win can give the Green Wave a six and five record.

The Pelicans have released the first half of their schedule. New Orleans will open the season on December 22nd versus the Raptors. The game will be played in Tampa because that’s where the Raptors are playing their home games.

The state health department reported 24-hundred new coronavirus cases today and 22 deaths to bring Louisiana’s death toll to 6,548. The number of COVID-19 patients in the hospital also increased by 32 to 1,357 and ventilator use increased by 12 to 154 patients.

The U.S Justice Department is investigating the Louisiana Department of Corrections over the long delays in releasing prisoners past their release dates. Jeff Palermo has the story.

The US Department of Justice is investigating the Louisiana Department of Corrections over allegations the state is keeping prisoners incarcerated long past their release date.

Attorney William Most says the DOC has known since 2012 that they hold about 2,200 inmates past their release date every year.

The investigation was the result of a series of lawsuits that uncovered information about the overdue release of prisoners.

Most identified one of the biggest problems leading to these delays.

Most says other states have release delays of a few days at most, and that no other state they’ve found has delays that last over a month.

Most says not only is the practice unjust and illegal, it’s costing taxpayers a lot of money.

The Louisiana Department of Corrections says they will fully cooperate with the US Department of Justice and the DOC takes this very seriously.

The state health department reports all but four ICU beds are in use at Acadiana region hospitals as COVID numbers continue to spike. Dr. Henry Kaufman, Chief Medical Officer at Our Lady of Lourdes in Lafayette, is extremely concerned.

Kaufman says the hospital is licensed for a specific number of beds with supporting staff, but they can expand into other areas of the hospital if needed.  As for staffing Kaufman says medical professionals have one of the highest burn-out rates and the ongoing pandemic has been taxing

Kaufman says while the majority of those who contract COVID will not require extensive care it’s when a surge breaks out hospitalizations go up.

The organizer of a swingers convention in New Orleans where 41 of the people who attended ended up positive for COVID-19 days after the event last month is planning another convention in the Big Easy in 2021. But Bob Hannaford told the Jim Engster show that their next convention is scheduled for August

Hannaford says he now regrets holding the convention this year after dozens of attendees tested positive for COVID-19 and one person had to be hospitalized. He says they did what they could to prevent an outbreak…

About two-thousand people attended the convention last year, but only 300 this year.  Naughty N’awlins is described as an opportunity for open-minded couples to embrace their sexuality.  Hannaford says based on their own contact tracing, sexual activity was not the main reason for the spread of the virus…

Polls open statewide at 7 AM and will stay open until 8 PM Saturday for the December runoff election. The Presidential election saw a 70 percent turnout, but Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin says this time around they only expect 20 percent.

Ardoin says the big drop in turnout is proof the state needs to move away from December elections. He says it’s just not a convenient time for fatigued voters.

The number of COVID-19 patients in the hospital has surpassed 13-hundred and according to the L-D-H dashboard, there are only four I-C-U beds available in the Acadiana region. Louisiana Treasurer John Schroder has been hospitalized with coronavirus. His office says Schroder is experiencing little discomfort.

It took less than a year for a COVID vaccine to be developed and some are concerned corners were cut. But Governor Edwards says that’s not true…

After a month off, the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs won for a fifth straight time at North Texas last night beating the Mean Green 42-31. Israel Tucker was well-rested and carried the ball 37 times for 161 yards and two scores, while Luke Anthony threw for two TDS. Tech is 5-3 on the year.

The Saints will visit the Falcons on Sunday after beating the dirty birds 24-9 just two weeks ago after a great defensive performance. The Black and Gold have the highest rated defense in the NFL, but defensive end Cam Jordan says the ranking doesn’t matter if they don’t accomplish their goals.

The Louisiana Film Channel, a streaming service of bayou state-related movies, is now accessible to film buffs. President of the LFC, Dr, Lucas Fry, says the channel was established so the public can see productions from up and coming filmmakers. Fry says many of the films are award-winning and have only been seen at festivals.
