As we wait on a rollout for a COVID-19 vaccine, the state reported nearly three-thousand new cases and 43 additional deaths today. Hospitalizations also increased by 60 to 1,589.

Governor John Bel Edwards says he will not make it mandatory for people to get a COVID vaccine nor will he provide financial incentives. Matt Doyle has the story.

State Police Trooper Jacob Brown of Rayville has been arrested for allegedly using excessive force during an arrest of a black man in Ouachita Parish in May of 2019. State Police Trooper Michael Reichardt says they first learned of the incident in October when the victim’s attorneys filed a lawsuit…

The victim’s attorneys say their client was dragged to the ground and beaten and had to be hospitalized as he’s also a dialysis patient.

The state fire Marshal’s office says over the past two weeks, six people have died in house fires bringing the total to 70 for the entire year. State Fire Marshal’s office spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue is urging residents to make sure they have a working smoke detector…

In the past two weeks, six people have died in fires in Louisiana, including the latest fatal fire which occurred in Lafayette Thursday night.  While the causes remain undetermined, State Fire Marshal Spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue believes unsafe heating practices could be factors.

Last year 75 people in Louisiana died due to fires and another 70 lives have been claimed in 2020.  Rodrigue says cooking and heating tips can help keep people safe.

The first wave of Pfizer vaccines are expected to be administered to frontline COVID-facing healthcare workers early next week. A vaccine by Moderna is expected to be approved in December as well and that will be given to nursing home residents and staff.

European reports indicate the vaccine has some side effects, but Edwards says he’s reviewed the data and there are vaccines people already take with side effects worse than this…

Those reports indicate the heaviest side effects for the Pfizer vaccine come after taking the booster shot 21 days after you are first vaccinated.

Edwards warns the vaccine won’t be available to the general public until sometime in spring and right now we’re facing a highly concerning spike in cases.

State Trooper Jacob Brown of Rayville has been charged with one count of Aggravated Second Degree Battery and Malfeasance in Office for allegedly using excessive and unjustifiable force during an arrest of a black man in Ouachita Parish in May of 2019. Trooper Michael Reichhardt says a lawsuit filed by the victim in October started the investigation…

A law office in Monroe has identified the victim as Aaron Bowman. They claim Bowman was dragged to the ground and beaten senselessly during the arrest. Reichhardt says the 30-year-old Brown was assisting the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s office when he engaged in excessive force…

Reichhardt says when the investigation determined that Brown did commit the violations, the trooper was promptly arrested.

An AARP dashboard report indicates nursing homes in Louisiana face concerning trends.  Data analyzed from October 19th to November 15th show an increase in staff cases and an ongoing shortage of staff and PPE. AARP State Director Denise Botcher says community spread is responsible for 476 new staff COVID cases.

The report indicates a staff shortage of 37-percent and 17-percent of long-term care facilities have less than a week supply of PPE on hand.

The report analyzed data before the Thanksgiving holiday among nursing homes. Botcher says an adequate supply of medical-grade PPE is vital and with only 17-percent of facilities reporting a one-week supply, she fears the worst.

Of the statewide death total from COVID, 40-percent of those fatalities are in nursing homes. Healthcare workers and nursing home residents are prioritized to receive vaccinations once authorized by the FDA. Botcher is encouraged but knows the vaccines will take time to show results.

The governor also says he will not make it mandatory for people to get a COVID vaccine, but he hopes most Louisiana residents will want it. Edwards says he’s not expecting much resistance early on, since front line health care workers who have been taking care of coronavirus patients are among the first group to get vaccinated.

Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry joins 16 other Attorneys General in supporting a lawsuit filed by Texas challenging the legitimacy of mail-in ballots in battleground states. Senator Bill Cassidy has tweeted there’s no evidence presented yet that would overturn Joe Biden’s victory, but says it is important for legitimate claims to be fully aired out.

The lawsuit challenges results in Wisconsin, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.

The Bossier City arena has a new name as it’s now known as the Brookshire (Brook-shear) Grocery Arena. The Tyler, Texas-based chain replaces CenturyLink as the naming rights sponsor. Brookshire Grocery CEO Brad Brookshire says they are thrilled about this new partnership.

A State Police Trooper has been arrested for allegedly using excessive force during an arrest in Ouachita Parish in May of 2019. 30-year-old Jacob Brown faces one count each of aggravated second-degree battery and malfeasance in office. State Police say they began investigating the incident when they received a civil lawsuit in October alleging Brown engaged in excessive and unjustifiable actions.

The SEC and Disney have announced a new ten-year TV deal, which means starting in 2024 ABC will replace CBS as the home of SEC’s featured 2:30 afternoon game. ABC also plans to show about a half dozen prime-time SEC football games. The new contract will also allow for ESPN to announce most game times farther in advance.

The Sugar Bowl which will be a national semi-final game on January 1st will be limited to three-thousand fans. The Saints will also have three-thousand fans at their next home game on December 20th versus the Kansas City Chiefs. The plan was for 15-thousand fans in the Dome, but that is no longer the case because of an increase in coronavirus cases. The Pelicans say they will have 800 fans at their home games.

There was quarterfinal high school playoff action last night…in Class Four-A, Neville advanced to the semi-finals with a 27 nothing win over Minden. That’s the second shutout in the playoffs for the Tigers. and in Two-A, Mangham knocked off Port Allen 35-19. Mangham quarterback Kaleb Pleasant accounted for four touchdowns.

Edwards is hopeful that 159-thousand people could receive the first of their two injections by the end of December.

But a vaccine arriving in Louisiana is not enough to prevent the cancellation of the Christmas Eve bonfires on the levees in St. James Parish. Parish President Pete Dufresne says the parish issued permits for the construction of the bonfires, but that was before cases spiked…

Louisiana Republican Attorney General Jeff Landry has filed a legal brief with the U-S Supreme Court urging the Justices to look into the conduct of the Presidential election in Pennsylvania. The document supports a complaint filed by the State of Texas. Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy has said Joe Biden won the election and hopes this issue can be settled so that the country can come together again…
