When Coach Jay Johnson walked off the bus, he threw his arms up in the air. Johnson says this championship feels just as good as the one won in 2023…

The NBA draft this Thursday night and the Pelicans have the seventh and 23rd picks in the first round. The Pels are looking at adding talent in both the front court and back court. Rod Walker of NOLA-dot-com has New Orleans seven-foot-one center Khamen Maluach (Kah-mahn  Mah-loo-ach) from Duke with the seventh overall pick. And with the 23rd overall pick, Walker has the Pels taking guard Walter Clayton Junior, who led the Florida Gators to a national championship.

Former Pelicans guard Jrue Holiday is on the move once again. The Boston Celtics have traded the two-time NBA champion to Portland for Anfernee Simons and two second round picks.

LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey is serving jury duty this week. She was spotted among the pool of candidates to serve on a jury in Baton Rouge yesterday.

Louisiana Tech women’s basketball coach Brooke Stoehr is reportedly receiving one year contract extension. Matt Belinson from the Ruston Leader says Stoehr is being rewarded for leading the Lady Techsters to the Great 8 of the WNIT and keep together a promising freshman class.

Lawmakers have created a new scholarship award for the TOPS program. Colleen Crain reports high school students who score a 31 or higher on the ACT and have at least a 3.5 GPA are eligible for more scholarship money….

Governor Landry will hold two bill signing ceremonies today. The first one will take place in Lafayette. The governor’s office says Landry will sign legislation that will unleash Louisiana’s coastal energy production. This afternoon, Landry will return to the State Capitol to sign a bill that reforms Pharmacy Benefit Managers with the hopes of lowering drug prescription prices.

 

Southeastern Louisiana University reached its 100-million-dollar goal for its “Get There Together” fundraising campaign, celebrating 100 years of SLU. The university’s biggest fundraising campaign to date, university President Dr. William Wainwright says funds will go towards supporting scholarships and professorships.

The national champion LSU baseball team received a hero’s welcome yesterday as they returned to Baton Rouge with the program’s eight national championship. Hundreds of fans braved the heat to greet the team at Alex Box Stadium….

The LSU Tigers are heading back to Baton Rouge as national champions of college baseball. The Tigers defeated Coastal Carolina five to three to win the series two games to none. Anthony Eyanson was the winning pitcher. He earned his 12th win of the year by striking out nine over six and a third innings and allowing just three runs on a hot afternoon. Eyanson transferred from UC Davis with the goal of winning a national title….

An Oakdale 13-year-old was killed around midnight Saturday night in a UTV crash on West River Road in Rapides Parish. The juvenile operating the vehicle lost control and struck a parked UTV, ejecting both the driver and passenger, Kyndal Vadrine. Master Trooper Casey Wallace says Vadrine was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead…

Jay Johnson becomes the first college baseball coach to win two national championships in his first four seasons at a school.

A three-judge panel of the Fifth U-S Circuit Court of Appeals is citing a 1980 U-S Supreme Court ruling for declaring the state’s Ten Commandments law as unconstitutional. Loyola University Law Professor Dane Ciolino says analysis of the 1980 ruling has evolved, but the essence of the opinion has held steady which is why the courts have said it’s unconstitutional to require the Ten Commandments to be posted in every public school classroom…

A 2024 law that requires the Ten Commandments to be placed in every public-school classroom remains on hold after a three-judge panel at the Fifth U-S Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court’s ruling that declares the law unconstitutional. Attorney General Liz Murrill says she will immediately seek relief from the full Fifth Circuit, if necessary, the U-S Supeme Court. But Loyola University law professor Dane Ciolino says there’s no guarantee that the Supreme Court will even take up the case.

Louisiana gas prices have climbed to $2.83 per gallon for a regular gallon of gasoline, up nearly ten-cents from last week, according to AAA. Spokesperson Don Redman says the increase is driven by rising crude oil prices and uncertainty fueled by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.

Redman says crude oil prices are around 75 dollars a barrel, and oil accounts for 50 to 60-percenet of gas prices.

A 30-foot tiger sculpture on a flatbed trailer affectionately named Mardi Gras Mike has been the talk of the town. Barry Kern, the president and CEO of Kern Studios, which created Mardi Gras Mike, says they’ve been taking him all over the city all week long.
