Today’s baseball game between LSU and Grambling State has been postponed due to the threat of severe weather in the Baton Rouge area. The two schools will attempt to reschedule the game later this season.

The New Orleans Pelicans got their third straight win last night as they took down the Sacramento Kings 117-110. The Pels were up by as much as 23 points at half time but Sacramento came back in the second half to make it a game. Brandon Ingram had a big night offensively, scoring a team-high 34 points. Forward Zion Williamson added 30 of his own and New Orleans is now just 4 games under .500 after the win with a 25-29 record.

The Ragin Cajuns baseball team grabbed a series victory over Arkansas State winning two out of three this weekend.  The Cajuns were carried by their offense as they had 38 hits and 30 runs this weekend.  Head coach Matt Deggs says his team was able to hit despite some new faces in the lineup.

Ragin Cajuns pitcher Connor Cooke has been named Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week. Cooke had a great outing against Arkansas State on Saturday as he threw a two-hit, complete-game shutout including 12 strikeouts and no walks.

Southeastern Louisiana right-hander Brennan Stuprich earned Southland Conference Player of the Week honors after tossing eight shutout innings in his last start, Stuprich struck out eight Abilene Christian batters in route to a 7-0 victory.

Louisiana Tech’s Jonathan Fincher has been named Conference USA pitcher of the for a second time this season after a shutout of Rice. Fincher is now 6-0.

Tax reform is expected to be a big topic at the legislative session which got underway last week. In his address to lawmakers to open the session, Governor Edwards called on revenue-neutral tax reforms. He says since 2016 they’ve made great strides stabilizing the budget and can’t go back to running deficits…

Republican legislative leaders are looking at lower income tax rates in exchange for a reduction in tax break programs.

The NCAA has threatened to remove events from states that pass this legislation. New Orleans is set to host the men’s Final Four next year.

The Louisiana Department of Education is launching a new campaign to boost the state’s shockingly poor levels of literacy among young students. Right now only half of the third-graders are reading on or above their grade level. Superintendent Cade Brumley says that number has been declining for several years.

The state is launching a new series of training programs for teachers and administrative staff in elementary and middle grades to boost literacy rates.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says a rehabbed brown pelican that was found covered in oil near Queen Bess Island in 2010 following the BP spill, and then released in Georgia, has found its way back to the Bayou State. LDWF Biologist Casey Wright says this is the first pelican released from the Coast Guard Station in Brunswick to return home.

Wright says brown pelicans are hard-wired genetically to return to their birth colony to breed, even when they move long distances.

Edwards says he’s also asking for lawmakers to approve another pay increase for K-12 teachers and support staff. The governor is also proposing a faculty increase for higher education professors and his budget proposal also fully funds TOPS.

The NCAA has announced its support for transgender athletes and threatens to pull events from states that pass anti-transgender laws. There’s a bill in the legislative session that would prohibit transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports in this state. Political commentator Clancy Dubos says the state legislature may end up creating problems that do not currently exist…

During his State of the State address last night, Governor Edwards says the state is receiving over three billion dollars in federal stimulus aid, but the money must be spent wisely…

A number of antitransgender bills have been filed that one political analyst says could be costly for the state if any pass. Brooke Thorington explains.

The Advocate is reporting that four LSU Health Shreveport employees have filed complaints with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleging that Chancellor Doctor G-E Ghali covered up harassment claims made by medical students and disciplined faculty who raised the allegations. An LSU Health Shreveport spokesperson says the school is ready to defend itself against these latest allegations.

Governor John Bel Edwards wrapped up the first day of the Legislative session Monday with a speech at Southern University’s Mumford Stadium outlining his hopes for the next two months. Edwards challenged lawmakers not to allow the state to return to the pre-pandemic normal, but to something better, highlighting his support for equal pay, minimum wage increases, and other reforms.

Residents in the St. Landry Parish village of Palmetto are rummaging through the damage from an EF3 tornado that ravaged at least 25 homes early Saturday morning and claimed one life. Parish President Jesse Bellard (Bell-ard) says the tornado touched down on Bolden Road just off Highway 359.

The National Weather Service says debris could be seen 15-thousand feet in the air. Seven people were transported to the hospital where two remain, one with back and neck injuries, the other with a collapsed lung.

Bellard is encouraging those who received damage to report it to Damage.LA.Gov so the state can assess the damage and possibly receive funding.

Bellard says he’s encouraged by the outpouring of support from residents of nearby towns assisting with clean-up and providing food for victims. As for tornado damage, he says this is the worst he’s ever seen.

The St. Landry Foundation is also collecting funds to assist with transporting the body of the one fatality from the storm back to his home in Mexico so he can be buried.

A 26-year-old woman who fell off her jet ski and was not found until the next day is listed in critical condition at a hospital in Covington. Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries spokesperson Adam Einck says the search began Friday night in the Tchefuncte River…

Einck says the search resumed Saturday morning. He says at around 10:30 in the morning the woman’s jet ski was located and St. Tammany Parish deputies found her about a half-hour later…

Louisiana could be in line for billions of dollars in federal “infrastructure” aid under President Biden’s over two trillion dollar American Jobs Plan.

Biden says Louisiana is in particular need, giving the state a D+ grade on the Infrastructure Report Card. State Transportation Secretary Shawn Wilson doesn’t dispute that appraisal.

It’s currently unclear exactly how much of the two trillion dollar bill would be headed to Louisiana.

The single biggest item in the proposal is 600 billion dollars for transportation infrastructure, 115 billion of that going to repairing roads and bridges.

Also included is 50 billion for infrastructure environmental resiliency, 111 billion for clean water infrastructure, 300 billion for manufacturing, 100 billion for broadband, and 85 billion for public transportation.

The AJP is marketed as an infrastructure bill but it contains hundreds of billions in funding for expanded childcare, elderly caregiving, and housing. Wilson says those investments are needed to power a modern economy.

Over 900 bills and resolutions have been filed for the legislative session that began today and there are several measures dealing with the legalization of sports betting. Metairie Senator Cameron Henry says a big question is whether lawmakers will agree to allow residents in approved parishes to place bets on their phone

Voters in 55 of 64 parishes said yes to legal sports betting in their parish last November. Henry says he’s heard the governor is not completely comfortable with mobile sports betting, where bets can be placed anywhere in an approved parish. He says as the legislation moves forward they’ll work with the governor’s office …

The mishandling of previous sexual misconduct cases at LSU will be an issue in the legislative session that starts today. New Orleans Representative Aimee Freeman has a bill that would require the firing of any university employee who fails to report sexual misconduct and abuse allegations…

Last year’s session was disrupted because of the coronavirus pandemic, so there are a lot of issues that legislators will attempt to tackle. House Speaker Clay Schexnayder says he’s pushing a tax reform bill that he says will simplify the state’s tax laws and help attract businesses…

A bill that will be heard in the legislative session calls for the automatic termination of any university or college employee who fails to properly report incidents of “power-based violence” to the campus Title Nine coordinator. New Orleans Representative Aimee Freeman says her legislation is in response to LSU’s failure to properly handle incidents of sexual misconduct.

Power-based violence is defined as dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and stalking.

The Ragin Cajuns eight-game winning streak ended yesterday with a 16-11 loss to Arkansas State. U-L Lafayette committed two errors that led to eight unearned runs and the Cajuns also walked nine hitters, while U-L batters struck out 13 times. Coach Matt Deggs says that all led to the loss…

Southeastern Louisiana turned a school-record five double plays to help the Lions blank Abilene Christian seven to nothing. The Lions are in first place by a half-game over McNeese. The Cowboys swept UIW this past weekend as Christian Vega allowed one run over six innings.

Grambling moved a half-game ahead of Southern for first place in the SWAC Western Division as the Tigers took two of three from the Jags.

Zion Williamson had 38 points as the Pelicans defeated Cavaliers 116 to 109 win over Cleveland. New Orleans hosts Sacramento tonight. The Kings have lost six in a row.
