Two Republicans are headed for a runoff in the 5th Congressional District race that covers a sprawling northeast, central, and Florida Parishes district. Matt Doyle has the story.

Senator Bill Cassidy avoided a runoff and was reelected to a second term. Brooke  Thorington has more on his victory.

The five members of Louisiana’s House delegation up for re-election have easily won another term in office. Republican Clay Higgins beat out three other opponents to win a third term. Higgins, a former law enforcement officer who was first elected in 2016, is humbled by the support he’s received…

Five of the seven constitutional amendments on the ballot passed. Amendment one, an anti-abortion measure, received the most support at 64-percent. But La-Politics-dot-com publisher Jeremy Alford says amendment four which would create a new state budget spending limit failed…

Also failing was Amendment Five which dealt with creating a new category for tax breaks for manufacturers. Alford says it just didn’t have enough support…

There were two Public Service Commission races on the ballot and Democrat Foster Campbell won re-lection as he held off Republican Shane Smiley 53-47 percent. Alford says Campbell is a political survivor…

The fifth Congressional District race is headed to a run-off featuring two Republicans, former Congressman Ralph Abraham’s chief of staff Luke Letlow and Alexandria State Representative Lance Harris.

ULM Political Science Professor Joshua Stockley says it’s not surprising in the deeply conservative district that a Democrat failed to make the runoff.

Stockley says GOP vs. GOP runoffs have been the case since former Congressman Rodney Alexander retired seven years ago.

Stockley says Letlow is the favorite due to his impressive half-million dollar fundraising effort but don’t count Harris out because anything could happen in a month.

The seat came open after Congressman Ralph Abraham announced his retirement.

Stockley says if 5th Congressional District voters go looking for ideological daylight between the two candidates they won’t find much…

Republican Senator Bill Cassidy won a second term Tuesday as he easily avoided a runoff in a race that featured 14 challengers. Cassidy received 62-percent of the vote and his closest competitor; Democratic Shreveport Mayor Adrian Perkins garnered 17-percent. Cassidy says he’ll continue to uphold conservative ideals.

With his wife and children beside him during his acceptance speech, Cassidy vowed to return to DC to fight for his constituents…

Perkins thanked his supporters during his concession speech for their work on his campaign that started in July. Perkins says over four months ago running for Congress was not on his radar.

Perkins congratulated Sen Cassidy on his victory, told supporters to pray for Cassidy, and encouraged a united front.

No LSU football on Saturday, but the Tigers baseball team will begin its purple-and-gold world series at Alex Box Stadium tonight at 6:30. Coach Paul Mainieri says the team has been practicing since September 30th and it looks they have a club that can play in Omaha next June…
