A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for most of south Louisiana through Thursday as heavy rains are expected throughout the area. Mike Shields, with the National Weather Service in Slidell, says this is due to a stagnant weather pattern over the area…

He says a very slow moving upper level trough is pumping moisture from the Gulf into the area. Shields says significant rainfall totals are expected today through Thursday…

He says three to six inches of rain could fall in south Louisiana over the next few days, with isolated areas receiving up to eight inches. Shields says some areas could receive repeat showers and thunderstorms, with heavy rainfall at times, throughout the course of this weather event…

According to a survey by the personal finance company SmartAsset, Covington and Mandeville top the list of best places to retire in Louisiana. Managing Editor A.J. Smith says they looked at key things which make the golden years happy and healthy including taxes, medical care and social life…:

Smith says one of the main reasons Covington ranked so high on the list was because of the large number of doctors offices in the area per 1,000 people at 15…:

The top retirement cities in the state also include Thibodaux, West Monroe, Gonzales, Denham Springs, Slidell, Hammond, Morgan City and Lafayette made number 10. Smith says most of these top cities are above the national average in the number of doctors offices. She says our taxes are also really low which makes Louisiana in general a good place to spend the golden years…:

However, Wade Duty, co-owner of Precision Firearms in Baton Rouge, says the report can be misleading because they base their report on a percentage of households…

Duty says his sales are up about 11-percent from the same month last year. Duty adds that there is a possibility that some the people surveyed may have not been completely truthful about owning a gun…

Data from the FBI shows an increase in the number of background checks being run, which indicates that the number of firearms being purchased is going up. The survey does show a shrinking gender gap in gun ownership. Duty says he has noticed the increase in women who are seeking to purchase firearms…

Mississippi-based Triumph Campaigns has polled this year’s governor’s race, and found that Republican US Senator David Vitter leading Democratic Amite Representative John Bel Edwards by just two percentage points. Triumph owner Justin Brasell says their generic gubernatorial ballot revealed an interesting statistic…

In the Lt. Governor’s race, Democratic Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden leads the field with 33-percent, followed by Republicans former Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser garnering 23-percent and Jefferson Parish President John Young with 20-percent. Brasell says this could be a very interesting race…

In the Attorney General’s race, incumbent Republican Buddy Caldwell and Democratic Alexandria Mayor Jacques Roy are in a dead heat with 30-percent each. The poll surveyed over 1,600 likely voters. Brasell says, overall, this survey shows Democrats faring much better than many thought…
