Renown Pointe Coupee literary icon Ernest Gaines has passed away at the age of 86. The writer was best known for his work, A Lesson Before Dying, which found national success after it was put into Opera’s Book Club in 1997. Gaines taught at UL Lafayette and was born on a plantation in New Roads in 33, and his family had to move out of state when he was 15 because his parish did not offer high school for African Americans.

A Denham Springs man is under arrest for stealing an electric shopping cart from a Walmart in Houma, allegedly to avoid getting a DWI. Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s spokesperson John DeSantis says 32-year-old Brice Kendell Williams had parked at one bar, started drinking, then decided to steal the cart and drive it to another bar. DeSantis says it was an incredibly dangerous decision.

Williams is facing felony unauthorized use of a moveable and a 2,500 dollar bond.

The first college football playoff rankings for the 2019 season will be released tonight at 8 PM.  Jerry Palm of cbs-sports-dot-com believes Alabama will be ranked third in the College Football Rankings. He says despite injuries, the Crimson Tide are very talented, especially if quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is healthy…
