According to data from the National Education Association, public school teachers who first start out, are paid about 15-hundred dollars more than the national average for rookie teachers around the country. But after a few years, the average salary for a veteran teacher falls significantly below the national average. Teacher unions say the higher than average starting salary attracts teachers to the profession.
