Louisiana has three of the top 30 cities most in need of charity donations this holiday season according to WalletHub.com. New Orleans came in at 10, Shreveport was next highest in the state at 21, and Baton Rouge came in at 26. WalletHub Analyst Jill Gonzales says one category in particular stood out for those Louisiana cities.
The report took into account child poverty, unemployment, homelessness, high school drop outs, and economic security, health, and safety ratings.
The state as a whole has a 4.7 percent unemployment rate, one percent above the national average, but Gonzales says one city’s employment struggles in particular single it out as in need of some extra charitable love this season.
All three cities scored above average for the number of consumer bankruptcies.
Gonzales says these rankings show the substantial need for giving’s to local charities in the holiday season, and hopes this will inspire Louisianans to seek out reputable non-profits who can bright up the holidays for the less-fortunate.
The report surveyed 180 cities nationwide.
