Starting in 2019, Louisiana high school students who compete sequences of STEM courses, will receive a special designation on their diploma for their efforts. Department of Education Assistant Superintendent Ken Bradford says students will be recognized depending on how many courses they’ve taken.
The course sequences necessary to obtain the seals include a wide variety of different STEM interests. Bradford says they cover fields that are in high demand these days.
A recent report showed only 10 percent of Louisiana students have met the benchmarks needed to show proficiency in science and math based curriculum.
Bradford says it’s vital to the state’s future that more students get qualified in STEM fields, but he expressed optimism that after reviewing ACT survey information, that many students are hoping to join those fields.

Drivers that use the Sunshine Bridge connecting Donaldsonville to Sorrento to cross the Mississippi River as part of their normal commute are going to have to find a new route for a while as the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development have announced the closure of the bridge as the result of damage sustained from a barge carrying a crane collided with the structure. DOTD Communications Director Rodney Mallett says there is no timeline for when the bridge will reopen.
Cut 12 (06) “…open the bridge.”
Mallett says the closure is going to be an inconvenience to the estimated 25-thousand drivers that use the structure on a daily basis, but there are alternate ways of crossing the Mississippi River.
Cut 13 (07) “…have two ferries.”
Mallett says the damage caused by the barge and the crane is enough to be a serious concern for the integrity of the 54-year old structure.
