A research team at LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center has been awarded a five year, $4.5 million grant. It comes from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, to evaluate two treatments for childhood obesity. Dr. Amanda Staiano says select facilities across the state will be participating with the program, which will be free for families.

A recent commission meeting involving the LDWF to discuss red snapper season has produced the estimated amount of red snapper landed this season. Finfish program manager for the agency, Jason Adriance says NOAA fisheries gave each of the Gulf States an exempted fishing permit, which allows states to manage their own recreational red snapper season.

Red Snapper season runs through July 8th.

A Legislative Auditor’s report says some companies that are paid by the state to help run Medicaid are not providing the Department of Health with information on what they are charging for their services. Managed Care Organizations, or MCOs, are required to give LDH detailed information that’s used to set the rates they are in turn paid. Legislative Auditor Daryl Purpera says this could also lead to a situation where the companies not providing the information, are in turn being paid more than they should because the state cannot verify the legitimacy of their charges.

Former LSU baseball player Alex Bregman hammered a game winning two run home run last night as the Astro’s defeated the Blue Jay’s 7-6. Bregman’s homer came in the 9-th inning.
