The governor’s plan includes allowing the fifth penny of the state sales tax to expire, but remove sales tax exemptions businesses enjoy. The plan echoes the recommendations of a bipartisan taskforce. Republicans want to reduce state spending. Pinsonat is skeptical a deal can be reached by the January 19th deadline…

Edwards has said he wants to stabilize the budget with a revenue neutral tax plan, but Barras says he also wants to reduce state spending. Pinsonat doesn’t see either side budging much…

If the two parties don’t come to an agreement before the end of an expected February special session, the governor would be forced to submit a balanced budget reflecting a one billion dollar cut in state spending, most of which would target healthcare and education.

The arctic blast halted crawfish farming, caused a rash of house fires, but it looks like this year’s strawberry crop should escape with minimal damage. The Saints are moving on in the NFC playoffs after beating the Carolina Panthers 31-26 in front of a raucous Superdome crowd. New Orleans defense came up with a big stand in the final minute of the game and Drew Brees threw for 376 yards and two touchdowns…
