The SEC has filed a federal lawsuit against LSU, president Wade Rousse, athletics director Verge Ausberry and head football coach Lane Kiffin alleging that LSU’s recruitment of former and current NFL players and intent to play them this season harms the conference and threatens further harm.
News of lawsuit came down as a Baton Rouge judge heard arguments on whether college athletes from the high school class of 2022 should receive a fifth year of eligibility because of the NCAA’s new rule that gives current and former college athletes five years to play five seasons.
The SEC is trying to implement a rule that says athletes who were on pro teams or signed pro contracts can not return and play college athletics. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill believes that the conference should not be allowed to circumvent a ruling against the NCAA with its own rules.
