A New Orleans man believes he’s deserving of up to 480-thousand dollars in compensation from the state for serving 42 years in jail for a crime he didn’t commit. Jeff Palermo has the story.
Cut 1 (35) “…I’m Jeff Palermo.”

The sixth district was redrawn specifically so that a Republican would get elected, but that hasn’t stopped two Democrats from running for the seat. Andrew Greenstein reports.
Cut 2 (35) “…I’m Andrew Greenstein.”

A 69-year-old New Orleans man who spent 42 years in prison for a murder a judge later said he did not commit is seeking 480-thousand dollars in state compensation. But Attorney General Liz Murrill says Elvis Brooks is not eligible because he pleaded guilty to manslaughter in 2019 in connection with the 1977 fatal shooting. Reporter Richard Webster…
Cut 4 (12) “…that should hold.”
Webster’s investigation for Verite News and ProPublica found Brooks accepted the plea deal before learning prosecutors had withheld potentially exculpatory evidence, including fingerprints recovered from beer cans handled by the gunmen.
Cut 5 (08) “…to his exonderation.”
Webster reports that since Murrill took office in 2024, she has opposed compensation requests in 22 of 23 wrongful conviction cases. Brooks, who now lives on a 994-dollar monthly Social Security check, says the compensation process has been torturous.
Murrill declined to comment on Brooks’ case.

On the heels of Colorado State putting out its revised hurricane forecast, NOAA is following suit. Forecaster Matthew Rosencrans has the updated numbers. (Revised forecast calls for seven to 13 named storms, including two to six hurricanes, with up to two being major hurricanes.)
Cut 7 (07) “…two major hurricanes.”
Rosencrans says the updated forecast is down from the original forecast of eight to 14 named storms.
Rosencrans says the quieter-than-average hurricane season can be credited to a strong El Nino in the Atlantic.

Following the Supreme Court ruling in the Callais case, the Republican-led legislature redrew the state’s congressional map with the purpose of flipping district six back to GOP control. But that didn’t stop Democrats Pat Forbes and Rubia Garcia from taking a stab at the seat that Cleo Fields is vacating as a direct result of the redistricting. Forbes was an aide to former Governor John Bel Edwards and says the Republicans vying for the sixth district seat seem to have lost their focus.
Cut 10 (08) “…to most people.”
Forbes says the people of the sixth district have serious issues that need to be addressed, and he feels that Republicans aren’t addressing them.
Cut 11 (11) “…and health care.”
Garcia previously qualified in the fifth district and has shifted her focus to the sixth district, since she lives within that district’s boundaries. She echoes Forbes’ sentiment that affordability is one of the biggest issues facing the people of her district.
Cut 12 (08) “…with groceries.”
Garcia says the issues facing the people of the sixth district do not have an “R” or a “D” next to them.
Cut 13 (11) “…all partisan lines.”
Going into the third and final day of qualifying, Forbes and Garcia will so far appear on the open primary ballot with four Republicans. Of course, everyone in the sixth district – and the fifth district – is waiting to see what Blake Miguez decides to do.

Saints legend Drew Brees will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame tomorrow. The Super Bowl MVP helped to revive the team and the city of New Orleans when he arrived as a free agent after Hurricane Katrina. He says it was a rebirth for both him and the community.
Cut 14 (12) “…the other side.”
Brees thought his NFL career might be over after an injury to his throwing shoulder ended his career with the Chargers in 2005. Instead, he led New Orleans to its only Super Bowl title and retired as the NFL’s all-time passing leader. He says there are so many people to thank along his 20-year career.
Cut 15 (08) “…so much gratitude.”
Brees will be enshrined alongside running back Roger Craig, linebacker Luke Kuechly, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald and kicker Adam Vinatieri. He says that every interaction he has with a current Hall of Famer gives him more appreciation for the honor he is about to receive.
Cut 16 (14) “…see and appreciate.”

Former LSU wide receiver Barion Brown has made a splash at Saints training camp. Brown was picked in the sixth round of this year’s draft as the last of three receivers selected by the Saints. Despite his strong start, he says he can’t listen to his own hype.
The Saints have a young and fast receiver room thanks to the addition of Brown and rookies Jordyn Tyson and Bryce Lance. Top wideout Chris Olave just inked a 136-million-dollar contract extension after four years in New Orleans, and Brown says he has stepped up as a leader in the room.
Cut 18 (10) “…some coaching tips.”
Saints head coach Kellen Moore has praised Brown as a sparkplug for the team. He says the 22-year-old has provided a positive attitude and has worked to be really well-prepared.
Cut 19 (19) “…been really detailed.”
