The cyclosporiasis outbreak is the biggest in the country’s history, with about 18-thousand confirmed or suspected cases nationwide – 100 of them here in Louisiana. Dr. Fred Lopez, a professor of medicine at LSU Health New Orleans, says cyclospora is normally prevalent in the warm months, namely May through August; and while lettuce is the most common source of the parasite, it has been found in other produce as well.

A federal inmate serving life in prison for his role in the kidnapping and murder of a Northwest Arkansas man died yesterday after being found unresponsive at the U.S. prison in Pollock on Sunday.  Prison officials have not released a suspected cause of death.
