In Tangipahoa Parish an overnight traffic stop escalated into a shooting where an Independence police officer was shot. Authorities say during the initial stop around 3;00 AM, a Tangipahoa Parish deputy was threatened with a gun and a chase began. During the second stop the suspect allegedly fired multiple shots and struck an Independence police officer in the leg. The suspect then ran into the woods, stole a car, and fled to Amite. The suspect who has not been identified was later arrested. The injured officer was treated at the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing.
