Louisiana gubernatorial candidates turned in campaign finance reports and Republican David Vitter still has the most cash on hand with $4 million while the other candidates have between 1 and 1.6 million. Saints Quarterback Drew Brees’ banged up throwing shoulder will not allow him to play against Carolina. Coach Sean Payton ruled him out for Sunday’s game. Its the first time in Brees’ 15-year career that he’ll miss a game due to injury. The last time he missed a game was the 2009 regular season finale, so he wouldn’t get hurt. Luke McCown will get the start for the injured Brees against the Panthers.

US House Speaker John Boehner surprisingly announced his resignation Friday which means Majority Whip Steve Scalise, of Jefferson, could be declared the candidate for the No. 2 spot which is majority leader. Majority Whip is the third highest position in the leadership hierarchy and if House Republicans elect Scalise to be their leader, he’d be the highest ranking Louisiana member of Congress since the early 70s.
