Grambling quarterback Myles Crawley has been named SWAC Offensive Preseason Player of the Year. He threw for 23-hundred yards and 16 touchdowns last season. Southern defensive lineman Ckelby Givens has been named defensive player of year. Southern and Grambling are picked to finish in the middle of the SWAC Western Division behind Alcorn and Prairie View.
The U-L Lafayette athletics director Bryan Maggard has agreed to a contract extension through June 30th 2019. Maggard has been with the Cajuns since 2017 and during that time the school has won 21 Sun Belt Conference, bowl game and NCAA regional championships in mens and women’s sports. U-L Lafayette is also in the middle of a 65-million dollar renovation project of its football stadium.
Two LSU pitchers were selected by the New York Yankees in the Major League Baseball draft. Right-hander Thatcher Hurd went in the third round to the Bronx Bombers and in the sixth round, New York took left-hander Griffen Herring, raising the possibility Herring will not return to LSU.
Power hitting first baseman Jared Jones has yet to be drafted, raising the chances he returns to LSU and shortstop Michael Braswell says he is returning to LSU.
The Chicago White Sox selected Louisiana Tech outfielder Cole McConnell in the tenth round after hitting .378 for the Bulldogs last season. The Chicago Cubs drafted Nicholls first baseman Edgar Alvarez.
