The Community Lighthouse Project is set to open more facilities across Louisiana just in time for hurricane season. Representative Troy Carter of New Orleans, who donated almost 4 million dollars to the project last year, says the lighthouses will be a safe space during an emergency.

Cut 3 (04) “…power outages.”

Carter says the lighthouses will be more than just a place to charge phones, as they will also provide air conditioning and fresh food and water in the event of a community power outage.

Cut 4 (09) “…lives.”

Carter says community members could refrigerate medicine, shelter from a storm, and avoid heatstroke in the lighthouses. Though only six lighthouses are in operation now, Carter says more will be up in no time at all.

Cut 5 (07)  “…season.”

The pilot proposal calls for 24 lighthouses across the state, 16 in New Orleans and others in Caddo, Calcasieu, East Baton Rouge, Jefferson, Rapides, St. Bernard, St. John, and Terrebonne Parishes. To see a full map, visit togethernola.org/clhproject.

BESE approves a new performance plan for schools and students, it’s called the “Grow.Achieve.Thrive” plan. BESE President Ronnie Morris says the plan will help set an expectation that high school graduates are ready for their next step in life…

Cut 6  (11) “…build on. ”

Morris says the revised system will utilize a 100-point grading scale, raise the bar for student outcomes, and place an emphasis on career and college readiness. Morris says the new system also allows schools to build relationships with businesses and community partners to provide internships for students.

Cut 7 (09) “…so forth.”

Morris says students will have opportunities for paid internships while still in school

Because only 34-percent of students are proficient in math and only 44-percent are proficient in English, Morris says these are the core fundamentals that schools can focus on to improve graduates’ readiness.

Cut 8 (08)  “…for success.”

The plan will go into effect for the 2025-2026 school year.
