Among the topics in the first statewide televised debate with five of the seven major gubernatorial candidates, was the state’s property insurance crisis. Four of the candidates say they would call for a special session immediately after taking office. Slidell Senator Sharon Hewitt says how the state regulates the industry needs to be changed.

Treasurer John Schroder says if elected he would call for a summit to include several entities to discuss the best way to address the crisis.

State police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened in Acadia Parish last night. Rayne Police requested assistance following a response to a call of someone firing a gun. Once officers arrived, gunfire was exchanged and the individual was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries. No officers were injured.
