State Ag and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain is asking for the public’s help to find the suspect accused of starting the Tiger Island Fire, the largest wildfire in Louisiana history in Beauregard Parish. Strain says the arson caused wildfire caused devastating damage to property and structures.

The Tiger Island Fire began on Aug. 22 and is only 55 percent contained. While no details were provided on exactly how investigators believe the blaze started, Strain urges the public to help find the culprits.

Strain says this fire is unprecedented. He says the wildfire forced the evacuation of 1,200 people from the town of Merryville and placed lives at risk.

Louisiana Forestry Association is offering up to two thousand dollar reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible. Anyone with leads should call LDAF investigators, the State Fire Marshal, and the Beauregard Parish Sheriff.

Research from Pennington Biomedical Center reveals that 45 percent of pregnant women in Baton Rouge exceeded the recommended weight gain during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Director of Reproductive Endocrinology Dr. Leanne Redman says the data also indicated increased rates of adverse pregnancy outcomes during the pandemic.

More than 23 thousand deliveries at Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge were examined between March 2019 to March 2022. Redman says for mothers with obesity, weight gain has continued to rise.

A slightly lower 44 percent exceeded recommendations for weight gain during pregnancy. Redman says the post-pandemic weight gain of pregnant women is starting to decrease to average gain.

The opening weekend of the high school football season was marred by a fatal shooting at the Brusly-Port Allen game on Friday night. Sergeant Landon Groger with the West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s  during halftime, 18-year-old Jarrettin Jackson the Second shot 16-year-old Ja’Kobe Queen only a few feet away from a concession stand…

Queen was a student at Brusly High School. A 26-year-old woman was also shot in the arm.

Groger says they’ll work to make sure future football games and other public events in West Baton Rouge are safe. But he says it’s a bad situation when an 18-year-old feels a need to bring a gun to a high school football game…

The West Baton Rouge School system says it will have increased security at future games and trauma and grief counselors are at the schools today. Jackson was arrested yesterday and booked for second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.

Narcan, a drug used to reverse opioid overdoses, will be available without a prescription on Wednesday. LSU Health New Orleans Chief of Community and Population Medicine Dr. Benjamin Springgate says Narcan is an important tool to counter the opioid overdose epidemic, but the cost could be a factor.

The suggested retail is $45 a carton which contains two doses of nasal spray.

While Springgate admits he’s not sure if over-the-counter availability of Narcan will make a dramatic difference

Some health insurers will cover the cost, or a portion of it, when it’s prescribed. Besides individuals who are at most risk for an overdose, Springgate says others should also consider purchasing Narcan

If you do have to administer Narcan, know that vomiting or seizure-like activity is a potential side effect. So, roll the person on their side to prevent choking, call 9-1-1 and stay with them until help arrives.
