State Police say a head on collision in Plaquemines Parish has left a mother and her 4-year-old son dead and a child in another vehicle critically injured. They say 25-year-old Jenny Taing, for unknown reasons, crossed the center line of the roadway and collided with an SUV. Taing and her son suffered fatal injuries in the crash. A 6-year-old boy in the SUV was transported to a local hospital where, at last report, he was listed in critical condition. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Republican Senators Bill Cassidy and David Vitter took a moment to honor the victims and heroes in the Lafayette movie theater shooting on the Senate floor. In light of this event, Cassidy says it’s time to reform America’s mental health system and he’s working on legislation with Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy…

We’ve learned since the shooting that the gunman, John Russell Houser, had a history of mental illness.

A UL-Lafayette research facility in New Iberia has been cited by the USDA for the injury and death of two different monkeys and allowing monkeys to escape their cages. Co-founder of Stop Animal Exploitation Now, Michel Budkie, says the USDA is not done investigating the facility and these new citations might mean a higher fine added against the center….

Budkie says UL Lafayette was fined 38-thousand dollars in 2011 after three young rhesus monkeys died of negligence.
