The Council for A Better Louisiana (CABL) has canceled its scheduled October 20th U.S. Senate debate, which would have pitted incumbent Republican Senator John Kennedy against Democrat challengers Luke Mixon and Gary Chambers. CABL President Barry Erwin says Kennedy’s campaign will not commit to a specific date, because his schedule is uncertain. Erwin feels it’s important for candidates to take part in televised forums…:

Erwin says CABL provided the candidates with the debate date and time many weeks ago, so the news from the Kennedy camp is a disappointment. He says it’s hard to have an election debate with no incumbent. Erwin says there may yet be some hope the candidates will square off before the November 8th election…:

Erwin says a live televised debate gives voters a better idea at who the candidates really are, because they are un-rehearsed and spontaneous. He says more and more political candidates are becoming reluctant to take part…:

CABL’s debate is canceled, but Erwin hopes that senate candidates will have at least one before the election.

In addition to the Louisiana National Guard and the United Cajun Navy, a shelter task force from the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services and an all-hazard incident management team from the State Fire Marshal’s Office are in Florida. State Fire Marshal Dan Wallis says their team can assist in a variety of recovery efforts.
Emergency Preparedness Director with DCFS Ricky Montet (Mon-tay) says three staff members are in Tallahassee and from there they will be deployed to assist with shelters in Florida.

Montet says it’s not the first time a shelter task force has aided in Florida, they were in Florida in 2018 for Hurricane Michael. The initial request is for two weeks and it’s part of the Emergency Management Assistance Compact or EMAC.
The DCFS shelter task force has played a critical role in every natural disaster in Louisiana since the 2016 floods.
Wallis says because Louisiana has requested assistance from other states in the past, especially after the last two hurricane seasons and the 2016 flood it was time to return the favor.
Wallis says depending on Florida’s needs post-Ian more personnel and equipment could be deployed.

LSU sets a new record in academic quality for its most accomplished freshman class in the university’s history. Assistant Vice President and Director of Administration Daniel Barrow says the class has an all-time high median GPA of 3.78 and an ACT composite of 25.5.
The freshman class is made up of 68 percent Louisiana residents and 32 percent from out of state and one-third of the freshman class are first-generation college students.
Barrow says as a member of the SEC and other research powerhouses across the nation, it has elevated LSU’s preeminence.
In addition to breaking academic quality, Barrow says this year’s freshman class enrollment of 7,367 surpasses last year’s record enrollment of 7,038.

Barrow says overall enrollment is at an all-time high of more than 37 thousand.

Union Parish Running back Trey Holly broke the Louisiana High School Football rushing record last Friday with 8,708 yards in his 5th season. The record was previously held by former LSU running back Nick Brossette who has a special bond with his usurper…
