The Baton Rouge Police Department has arrested the mother of a 2-year-old who died Monday night as a result of trauma. They say 21-year-old Candice Smith told investigators that she pushed her daughter, Da’Laijah Smith, forcefully causing the child to hit her head against a shower wall. Smith also confessed to other physical abuses against her child. Smith is charged with second degreee cruelty to juveniles. Other charges are possible pending the autopsy which is scheduled for tomorrow.

State Police say a pedistrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on US 190 in St. Tammany Parish last night. Authorities say 27-year-old Joseph Robinson III of Lacombe was attempting to retrieve a ladder that fell from the back of his truck when he was hit by an SUV. Robinson was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Louisiana Tech had an easy win over Southern Arkansas last night. The Bulldogs won 74-52 for their 20th straight win in the Thomas Assembly Center. Alex Hamilton had 17 points and now has over 1,000 for his career.

Sun Belt play starts tonight for U-L-M and U-L Lafayette. The Ragin Cajuns are at Akransas Little Rock, while the Warhawks visit Georgia State. The Cajuns have won five of their last seven, while the Warhawks are 6-and-5, first time since the 2007-08 season they’ve had a winning record in non-conference play.

In the NBA…the Pelicans host the Phoenix Suns tonight. New Orleans is two games back of Phoenix for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office says one teen is dead and another in stable condition after being shot by a business owner after they allegedly broke into his store and tried to run him over. The owner told authorities that he fired several rounds into the vehicle after one of the men raised a gun toward him. Authorities say 19-year-old Latorious Walker was found dead in the vehicle with several gunshot wounds. 17-year-old Lamar Brooks was found with a single gunshot wound and taken to a local hospital.

Republican Congressman Steve Scalise of Metairie, has acknowledged, while serving in the Louisiana Legislature, he once addressed a white supremacist group. In May of 2002, Scalise spoke at a convention of the European-American Unity and Rights Organization, which the Southern Poverty Law Center classifies as a hate group. In a written statement, Scalise spokesperson, Moira Bagley Smith, says that Scalise spoke to rally support for conservative fiscal policies in Louisiana and in no way to endorse the views and mission of this group.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s Traffic Safety Culture Index shows that only one-in-four of drivers feel that the use of prescription drugs behind the wheel poses a threat to their personal safety. To educate drivers on the impact that prescription and over-the-counter drugs can have on safe driving ability, spokesman Don Redman says they have developed the free RoadwiseRX website…
