The ice storm has Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents busy responding to calls for assistance. Captain Kenneth Balkom says LDWF agents have transported dozens of essential workers to and from their work at the Northeast Veterans Home in Monroe and the Northwest Veterans Home in Bossier City.

A LDWF agent also rescued three missing juveniles stuck in their vehicle on the Upper Ouachita National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday.

Rockin’1000 has staging concerts in stadiums throughout Europe for ten years all featuring one-thousand musicians.  And their first US show will follow suit,  with Harry Connick Junior as its special guest artist director.  Connick says this will be the first Rockin’1000 concert to feature a brass section.

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is at the Senior Bowl this week to showcase his talents to NFL scouts, coaches, and general managers. Nussmeier battled an abdominal injury last season and says he’s worked hard to get back to 100-percent to participate in Mobile.

Going into the 2025 season, Nussmeier was a potential first-round pick, but after an injury-plagued season, he is now projected as a third to sixth-round pick.

Joe Brady, LSU’s passing game coordinator during the Tigers’ 2019 national championship, has landed a head coaching job at the age of 36. The Buffalo Bills promoted Brady after two seasons as their offensive coordinator.  Buffalo’s offense has been one of the best in the NFL since Brady took over as O-C.

A highly respected high school football coach has passed away. Former Jennings coach Rusty Phelps died late last week from a stroke at the age of 62. Phelps won over 200 games at Jennings and led the Bulldogs to a state championship game appearance in 2019. Former Eunice Coach Paul Trosclair, who coached against Phelps for many years, says Phelps meant a lot to the Jennings community.

Visitation is tonight, and funeral services are tomorrow in Jennings.

In college basketball last night, McNeese State dribbled past Southeastern Louisiana 76-66, UNO upended Nicholls 80 to 62, and Northwestern State came up a little short against the Lumberjacks, losing to Stephen F Austin 69 to 67.

The Pelicans lost to Oklahoma City 104 to 95.

Ouachita Parish is trying to recover from a nasty ice storm, but local officials are impressed with the community’s resiliency. Jeff Palermo has the story.

In all, more than 78-thousand people in North Louisiana remain power this morning– more than half of those are in Ouachita Parish. DeSoto, Richland, and Sabine parishes also have a large percentage of homes and businesses still without electricity.

To put together its first U.S. show, the people of Rockin’1000 sought out a heavy-hitter – and they found one in New Orleans’ very own Harry Connick Junior. The legendary musician is serving as special guest artistic director for the show that will rock the Superdome Saturday night.

As one might expect, Connick will be joining the band for a number or two.  We’re told tickets are still available.

Saturday’s Rockin’1000 concert in the Superdome will be like none other – and to accomplish that, organizers sought out a local heavy-hitter. Andrew Greenstein reports.

The ice and snow arrived in northwest Louisiana on Saturday. Balkom says they got a call that day about two 18-year-0ld duck hunters stuck in shallow water and mud in the Red River in Bossier Parish.

A LDWF agent also rescued three missing juveniles on the Upper Ouachita National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday. The agent found three juveniles in a truck that was stuck.

Balkom says LDWF agents also conducted welfare checks on the drivers who were stranded for up to 20 hours in some cases on I-20. He says winter weather and Louisiana do not mix well.

On social media, Cassidy said the credibility of ICE and the Department of Homeland Security are at stake. He says it seems that they may have lost sight of the purpose of the enhanced immigration enforcement operation, and that could have a profound effect on President Trump’s legacy.

Cassidy says the two deadly shootings at the hands of federal agents in Minneapolis this month threaten to undo the positive effects of the whole operation.

Much of East Carroll Parish, which is located at the northeastern tip of Louisiana, is without power and water. Echols has described the damage in East Carroll Parish as catastrophic. He says many businesses impacted by the ice storm will need some federal assistance.

Governor Landry says he has requested a federal disaster declaration to help fund the recovery effort.

About 75-thousand customers are still without power. West and East Carroll, Jackson, Richland and Ouachita parishes still have a large percentage of homes and businesses without electricity. Monroe Mayor Friday Ellis says if you are using a generator, make sure it’s 20 feet away from the home.

Former Jennings High School head football coach Rusty Phelps passed away on Friday after suffering a stroke. Phelps coached for a total of 35 years, with 28 at Jennings. Former Eunice football coach Paul Trosclair says Phelps was one of the good guys.

Phelps led Jennings to five district championships, eight quarterfinals, two semifinals and the Class 3A finals in 2019. Trosclair, who coached against Phelps for many years, says Phelps meant a lot to the Jennings community.

There are now eight people confirmed dead in the winter storm, after the state health department confirmed five additional fatalities today. Five people died of hypothermia, an elderly DeSoto Parish man died of carbon monoxide poisoning, a 79-year-old DeSoto Parish woman died after her oxygen concentrator failed as a result of no power, and a Texas man died while driving on icy roads in Mansfield.

Governor Landry wants people in north Louisiana to do these two things.

Landry spoke in Monroe today after taking a tour of some of the destruction the ice storm has caused in that city. Mayor Friday Ellis says once the ice melts away, the clean-up will be extensive.

Currently, more than 88-thousand people in North Louisiana remain without power – more than half being in Ouachita Parish. East Carroll, Jackson and Richland parishes also have a large percentage of homes and businesses without electricity.

The Buffalo Bills are promoting offensive coordinator Joe Brady to head coach on a five-year deal, making Brady the youngest active head coach in the NFL at 36 years old. Brady played a major role in LSU’s historic 2019 championship season as the pass game coordinator.

The Washington Commanders are hiring former LSU defensive coordinator and Minnesota Vikings defensive backs coach Daronte Jones as their new defensive coordinator. Jones served as the Tigers’ D-C in 2021.

Last night, the sixth-ranked LSU women’s basketball team defeated Florida 89-60 to win its fifth straight game. Sophomore guard Jada Richard led the team in scoring with 20 points. Richard also held Florida’s Liv McGill, who was ranked No. 5 in scoring in the nation, to just 14 points. Head coach Kim Mulkey says Richard’s defense has been impressive.

The 2026 LSU baseball team returns its entire starting outfield from last year’s 2025 College World Series championship team. Over the offseason, sophomore centerfielder Derek Curiel put on 20 pounds of muscle to add more power and speed to his swing. Curiel says he wants to make sure he’s a difficult at-bat for opposing pitchers this season.

The Pelicans will have a chance to finish their three-game road trip undefeated tonight as New Orleans takes on the Thunder at 7 p.m. Teurlings Catholic senior quarterback Alex Munoz is staying in Lafayette for his college career. Munoz announced his commitment to UL-Lafayette, where he will join his father, George Munoz, who serves as the Cajuns’ Associate Head Coach and Tight Ends Coach. Munoz led Teurlings to an 11-1 season this year.

The LSU men’s basketball team is back in action tomorrow as the Tigers host Mississippi State at 6 p.m.

About 90-thousand people in north Louisiana are still without power. Governor Landry says getting their power turned back on is a major priority. Landry says the number of linemen and crews have doubled as they’ve been able to shift personnel from south to north Louisiana. He says he’s hopeful 90-percent of customers will have power restored by Thursday.

Once the power is restored, an extensive cleanup will need to take place. There is a lot of debris that needs to be hauled away. Monroe Representative Michael Echols says many businesses impacted by the ice storm will need some federal assistance…

Echols has called the damage done to Ouachita Parish as catastrophic.

 

The ice and snow has made travel difficult on I-20. According to social media reports, some motorists sat on the interstate, with no way to move for up to 20 hours. Department of Transportation spokesperson Erin Buchanan….

For those of you in North Louisiana, DOTD is urging you to stay off the roads once again today, if you possibly can. Spokeswoman Erin Buchanan says that especially includes I-20.

Buchanan says those stalled 18-wheelers on I-20 are making the roadway nearly impassable, in some cases stranding people in frigid conditions for hours.

Cut 4 (11) “…out of there.”

Buchanan says they’re trying to help those stranded people as best as they can.

Buchanan says temperatures should start to warm up today to the point that the ice should start to melt and traffic can start moving again. But in the meantime, DOTD has its crews out on roadways clearing the ice as much as possible.

The state health department has announced five additional deaths because of the winter storm, bringing the total number to eight. The cause of death for five of the victims is hypothermia. L-D-H also says an elderly person in DeSoto Parish died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Also in DeSoto Parish, a 79-year-old woman died after her oxygen concentrator failed as a result of no power. First the good news – temperatures will warm up to close to 60 degrees for much of the rest of the work week.
