With a massive ice storm approaching Louisiana, Governor Landry has declared a state of emergency. Landry says while Louisiana had a historic snow event last year, snow is easier to deal with than ice.

LSU Health Climatologist Barry Keim says driving on icy roads is dangerous enough; driving on icy elevated highways is impossible – and here in Louisiana, there are miles and miles of them. Thus, he’s expecting transportation officials to shut many of them down this weekend.

The last time Louisiana had a major ice storm was February 2021.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill says while it’s long-standing policy not to issue opinions on the constitutionality of state laws, cockfighting remains illegal in the state. Murrill was responding to a formal request from the St. Landry Parish Council, as some in the parish want the state to amend or repeal its ban on cockfighting. Nadea Comeaux told the council cockfighting is, in her opinion, wholesome entertainment.

Wayne Pacelle (puh-SELL-ee), the president of Animal Wellness Action, says that woman couldn’t be more off-base if she tried.

Louisiana was the 50th and final state to ban cockfighting in 2007; it became illegal at the federal level as part of the 2014 farm bill.

Lane Kiffin’s top-rated 2026 transfer portal class got even stronger after receiving a commitment from the top edge rusher in the portal, Princewill Umanmielen (ooh-MAHN-me-ellen) of Ole Miss. Umanmielen had 45 tackles, including 13 tackles for loss, as well as nine sacks for the Rebels last season. Zack Nagy, the managing editor of LSUTigersOnSI.com, says Umanmielen is an impact player.

UL-Lafayette men’s basketball lost to Appalachian State 72-58 today to drop to 5-and-16 on the season. Junior guard Dorian Finister led the team in scoring with 16 points. The Cajuns’ game at Old Dominion on Saturday has been postponed to Monday, February 16th at 4 p.m. due to an anticipated winter storm.

Saints rookie quarterback Tyler Shough was named as a finalist for the Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Joining Shough as finalists are New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart, Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Emeka Egbuka (uh-MEH-kuh eh-BOO-kuh), New England Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson and Carolina Panthers receiver Tetairoa McMillan. Shough was 5-4 as the starter this season.

The ULM men’s basketball team was blown out by Marshall 115-60 today to drop to 3-17 on the season. The Warhawks are right back at it tomorrow at 11 a.m. against Appalachian State. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was moved up due to winter weather concerns.

McNeese men’s basketball is moving Saturday’s game against the University of New Orleans up to 2:30 p.m. Tipoff was originally scheduled for 4 p.m.

Due to anticipated inclement weather, Grambling State men’s basketball is rescheduling its game against Mississippi Valley State on Saturday to Monday at 6:30 p.m. The Tigers’ game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, originally scheduled for Monday, will now be on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

South Louisiana could also see freezing rain this weekend, but it’s not expected to be as significant as central and north Louisiana.

The St. Landry Parish Council is making a formal request to Attorney General Liz Murrill for her opinion on whether the state’s law banning cockfighting is unconstitutional. It comes as several in the parish are pushing to make it legal there once again. Nadea Comeaux says cockfighting, which had a history in the parish, would bring in much-needed revenue.

Comeaux argued before the council that cockfighting is, in her opinion, wholesome entertainment.

It is a federal crime to attend an animal fighting event, and cockfighting is illegal at the state level in all 50 states, with Louisiana the last state to outlaw it in 2008. Jim Demoruelle told the council that laws mean nothing to those who stage cockfights.

Jeff Dorson, the director of the Humane Society of Louisiana, said prior to the meeting that reinstating cockfighting would be a horrible idea, as it would promote cruelty at a time when the world has seen enough of it.

The council also voted on a resolution to contact State Representative Dustin Miller to introduce a bill to repeal or modify Louisiana’s cockfighting ban. The resolution failed on a vote of 7-to-6, with Council Chairman Wayne Ardoin casting the tiebreaking vote.

Corbin says SWEPCO works closely with the offices of emergency preparedness in each parish in its service area so that it has the latest information on road conditions.

Corbin says SWEPCO does not wait until the forecast mentions “ice storm” to start preparing for one.

Corbin says when government officials urge you to stay off the roads during ice storms, this is to keep them clear so that crews can safely get to locations to restore power.

In the last hour, the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for north Louisiana. And it begins Friday night until noon on Sunday. It covers the Shreveport and Monroe areas. In its warning message, the National Weather Service says ice accumulation between one third of an inch to an inch is expected along the I-20 corridor.

The mother of a 10-month-old child who died after being left in a hot car in August of 2024 has been sentenced to five years in prison. Hannah Faith Cormier of Jennings pleaded no contest to negligent homicide.

A film shot in Louisiana is now one for the record books. Ryan Coogler’s vampire epic “Sinners,” starring Michael B. Jordan, scored a record-breaking 16 Oscar nominations, including Best Film, Best Actor and Best Director. The previous record was 14, held by three films – “All About Eve,” “Titanic” and “La La Land.”

Lane Kiffin’s already No. 1 Transfer Portal class got even stronger with the addition of the number one edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen (ooh-MAHN-me-ellen), who led Ole Miss with nine sacks last season. Umanmielen is rated as the fifth best prospect in the portal by 247sports.

Kiffin may not be done yet. The Tigers are fighting to land Colorado sophomore Jordan Seaton, who is rated as the number-one offensive tackle in the transfer portal. Zack Nagy who covers LSU for Sports Illustrated says LSU and Oregon are in a recruiting battle for Seaton.

Hometown hero Josh Brantley is returning to Ruston as he’s committed to play for Louisiana Tech. As a quarterback, Brantley led Ruston High to a state championship in 2023. He was on Tulane’s roster last season, but didn’t play. Matt Belinson of the Ruston Leader reports Brantley is expected to play tight end for the Bulldogs.

Tonight In women’s hoops, the sixth-ranked Lady Tigers look for their fourth straight win as they travel to Texas A&M. The Lady Techsters are looking for their fifth straight win as they visit Missouri State. McNeese Coach Ayla Guzzardo returns to Hamond tonight as the Cowgirls look for their eighth straight as they face Southeastern. Guzzardo is an S-L-U alum and led the Lady Lions to the NCAA Tournament as their coach in 2023.

North Louisiana could be hit with a significant ice storm this weekend. State Climatologist Jay Grymes says rain will reach the state’s northwestern parishes on Friday, and that rain will eventually turn to freezing rain and spread across the northern half of the state.

Minor icing is also possible across south Louisiana which is why the winter storm watch has been extended south to the I-10 corridor.

DOTD spokesperson Rodney Mallett says they do have a chemical called Pavix that can help with iced over bridges, elevated highways and roads.

Mallett says the state also has more than ten million pounds of salt.

 

Two juveniles have been arrested in the shooting death of a sixth-grade student in Bastrop. According to the Morehouse Parish sheriff’s Office. One of the juveniles has been charged with negligent homicide, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of a firearm by a juvenile. The second juvenile is facing an obstruction charge along with drug and gun charges.

With Julia Letlow seeking bigger and better things, the race is on to replace her in the House of Representatives. Andrew Greenstein reports.
