A federal judge has ruled a 2023 state law that requires social media companies to verify the age of users is unconstitutional. Jeff Palermo has reaction.

A Vernon Parish woman authorities say called the police after shooting and killing her husband has pleaded guilty to a count of manslaughter.  Melissa Ann Sweat was arrested in August of last year and originally charged with second-degree murder.  She faces up to 40 years in prison with the manslaughter plea.  Sentencing is set for January.

Too much screen time can cause nearsightedness in children. Louisiana Deputy Surgeon General Dr. Wyche Coleman says using objects up close like phone screens can cause permanent complications.  He recommends kids put down the phones and go play outside.

Louisiana’s law requiring social media companies to verify the age of users, obtain parental consent and provide parental controls violates the first amendment. That’s the ruling from federal Judge John deGravelles after NetChoice challenged the law saying the government doesn’t have the authority to restrict free speech that way. But, attorney General Liz Murrill says the purpose of the legislation is to protect children from online predators.

Murrill has said she will appeal the decision.

Two people are dead, and one is in critical condition following a shooting in LaPlace last night around 7.  St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff Mike Tregre has said there is no threat to the public at this time and that this was an isolated incident.

Raising Cane’s owner Todd Graves and Saints owner Gayle Benson are once again donating children’s bikes to youth organizations across the country.  Yesterday, they were in Baton Rouge to donate 100 bikes and helmets to members of the YMCA of the Capital Area.

LSU freshman offensive lineman Carius Curne, a five-star recruit out of Arkansas, plans to enter the transfer portal. Curne started seven games this past season, with starts at both left and right tackle.

Tulane had just 282 yards of offense in its first matchup against Ole Miss in the regular season. The two teams meet again Saturday in a College Football playoff game. Green wave quarterback Jake Retzlaff (Rhett-Zloff) says offensive coordinator Joe Craddock told the offense it needed to improve on several aspects in order to give itself a shot at winning…

The Ragin Cajuns turned it over three times and lost to Delaware 20-13 last night in the 68 Ventures Bowl.

 

ULM men’s basketball opened up Sun Belt play last night by losing a tough game to South Alabama, falling to the Jaguars in double overtime 96-82. The Warhawks had an 18-point lead at halftime. The Jaguars scored the final 14 points of regulation to force the first overtime.

Louisiana Tech shot 32-percent from the field and lost to Tulane 61-53.

Attorney General Liz Murrill says it’s unfortunate that the court chose to protect huge corporations that facilitate child exploitation.

LSU men’s basketball is coming off an impressive win against SMU in New Orleans this past weekend. Senior forward Pablo Tamba had one of his best games as a Tiger as he scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Head coach Matt McMahon told Tiger Rag Radio that Tamba is a special player.

With LSU junior Jalen Reed’s season-ending Achilles injury, the Tigers had to move senior forward Marquel Sutton back to the post after he played the three for a while. McMahon says he adapted well in his natural position against the Mustangs.

Tulane faces Ole Miss for the second time this year in the first round of the College Football Playoff on Saturday. The Rebels blew out the Green Wave the first time, winning by five touchdowns. Junior quarterback Jake Retzlaff said the team is looking to get revenge the second time around.

The last time Tulane played Ole Miss, the Green Wave had only 282 yards of offense. Retzlaff says offensive coordinator Joe Craddock told the offense it needed to improve on several aspects in order to give itself a shot at winning.

The former U-S Marine was arrested Friday on his way to New Orleans and authorities say they found guns, a gas canister and body armour in his vehicle.

A 14-year-old honors student was killed when she was struck by a vehicle in Shreveport on Monday. The victim has been identified as Cali Agent and she was an eighth grader at Magnolia School of Excellence. Police say the driver is cooperating with the investigation.

LSU interim head coach Frank Wilson has accepted a job with Ole Miss to be the Rebels’ running backs coach. Tiger Rag Editor Glenn Guilbeau says new LSU head football coach Lane Kiffin is expected to hire the running backs coach he had at Ole Miss, Kevin Smith, as Wilson’s replacement and Smith could help the Tigers acquire a 12-hundred yard rusher…

LSU redshirt freshman quarterback Colin Hurley is expected to enter the transfer portal. Hurley served as the third-string quarterback and left the team in November. The Tigers are now down to one scholarship quarterback with Michael Van Buren.

Freshman offensive lineman Carius Curne is also expected to enter the transfer portal after playing in seven games and starting games at both left and right tackle this season.

UL-Lafayette host the Delaware Blue Hens in the 68 Ventures Bowl tonight at 7:30 p.m. Quarterbacks Lunch Winfield and Walker Howard will both be available. Howard helped lead the Cajuns to a 30-27 overtime win over ULM after Winfield exited the game with an undisclosed injury. Desormeaux says he has full confidence in both players to get the job done.

New Southern head football coach Marshall Faulk is set to make 1.2 million dollars over the next three years, earning $400,000 dollars each year. Faulk is now is among the highest-paid coaches in HBCU football, tying Michael Vick’s annual salary at Norfolk State. Faulk also has several performance-based incentives in his contract, one of which would pay him 50,000 dollars if Southern were to win the Celebration Bowl. The contract also includes a $950,000 pool for assistant coaches’ salaries.

ElementUSA announces that it’s investing 850-million dollars to build a rare earth and critical minerals refining facility in St. James Parish. Parish President Pete Dufresne says the facility will lead to the creation of 200 new direct jobs with an average salary of 90-thousand dollars a year, along with more than 550 new indirect jobs.

The facility will help strengthen the U.S. supply chain for materials essential to advanced manufacturing, national defense and energy technologies. Dufresne says ElementUSA chose St. James Parish because the industrial infrastructure is already in place with the Atlantic Alumina plant.

Dufresne says the addition of ElementUSA would enhance the production that’s happening at Atlantic Alumina.

Construction of the new ElementUSA plant is expected to begin sometime in 2027.

FBI agents arrested the 29-year-old last weekend as he was allegedly loading his vehicle with an assault rifle and body armor. Investigators have linked him to a California-based anti-government group which had been plotting a series of bomb attacks on New Year’s Eve. Ciolino says it will take quite a while before more serious charges are filed, and even longer before an indictment can be handed down.
