Fallen Iberville Parish Deputy Charles Riley was laid to rest on Monday. The 33-year-old Riley and another deputy were shot last week while interviewing a suspect at the Iberville Parish Courthouse. Riley, a U-S Navy veteran, who served with the Iberville Sheriff’s Office for six years. His best friend and fellow deputy, Jordan Eric Ward, spoke about Riley’s bravery at the funeral…

It’s day 14 of the federal government shutdown. The U-S Senate is expected to vote again today on a House-passed measure to fund the government. LSU Political Science Professor Robert Hogan says the House is not in session, so the Senate does not have another option.

The funding proposal has already failed seven times, as Senate Republicans have not been able to get enough support from Democrats.

Former Governor John Bel Edwards says he will not be a candidate in next year’s U-S Senate race. Edwards, who served eight years as governor from 2016 to 2023, says this is not the right time to re-enter public office. Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says Edwards’ announcement is not surprising, since it’s very difficult for a Democrat to win a statewide race in Louisiana.

This, after for the second time this season, gunfire marred the festivities. Before this past Saturday’s game, a man accidentally shot himself in a leg, and two people were injured in a shooting by the campus’ north gates.

That, however, pales in comparison to the nine-million in cash Senator Bill Cassidy reported last quarter. Campaign finance reports are due to the Federal Elections Commission tomorrow.

Kelly says LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is fine after suffering a minor ankle sprain in the win against South Carolina.

Former LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels threw for 311 yards and three touchdowns last night, but he also turned it over twice, including a critical fumble that set up a game winning field goal by the Bears as Chicago escaped D-C with a 25-24 win. The Saints are at Chicago this Sunday.

 

UL-Lafayette head coach Michael Desormeaux (DEZ-er-moe) says junior quarterback Walker Howard is back practicing fully this week after missing the last six weeks with an oblique injury that required surgery. Lunch Winfield is still the Cajuns’ starting quarterback, but Desormeaux says Howard is glad to be back.

LSU’s defense will have to face another dual-threat quarterback this week with Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia. Head coach Brian Kelly says that the Tigers have to take Pavia’s ability to run out of the game to make him one-dimensional so that he becomes more predictable throughout the game.

LSU sophomore right tackle Weston Davis has struggled throughout his first five starts, but he did not allow a sack when he faced South Carolina’s Dylan Stewart. Kelly says the Tigers are sticking with Davis at right tackle and says it’s key for him to continue to play so that he can continue to develop.

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier had his fair share of ups and downs in the 20-10 win over South Carolina. Nussmeier threw the ball better against the Gamecocks, but still threw two interceptions. Kelly liked the way that Nussmeier attacked but says they need to limit his mistakes.

Authorities have arrested a Lafayette man for the murder of a Lake Charles Lyft driver and a second suspect died when he ran into traffic trying to escape authorities. Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Stitch Guillory says their investigation started on Friday when 62-year-old Lawanna Lewis’ body was found in a ditch in Westlake…

Twenty-three-year-old Ethan Bush of Boyce was pronounced dead after he was struck by traffic. Guillory says 26-year-old Tristan Bush of Lafayette is facing second degree murder charges.

After a shooting on LSU’s campus injured two people Saturday during the football game, Governor Landry has issued an order for state police to work with LSU and local law enforcement. According to LSU, they typically have 600 officers from various agencies on duty during football games and in the coming days will review resources and protocols. University officials say they are fully committed to protecting everyone who comes onto camps and as they enhance public safety protocols, they will communicate the changes.

Democrat Helena Moreno will take over as the mayor of New Orleans in 90 days. Moreno beat 11 other candidates to win the mayoral election, without the need of a run-off. John Couvillon of JMC Analytics and Polling says Moreno, who was born in Mexico, did very well with white voters and received a good number of votes from Republicans and Democrats…

LSU football is coming off a 20-10 win over South Carolina, but the Tigers had a few players go down with injuries. Head coach Brian Kelly gave an update on several players’ availability heading into this week’s game at Vanderbilt.

Kelly also said defensive end Jimari Butler suffered a minor ankle sprain and is probable. Defensive tackle Bernard Gooden has a bruised collarbone and is expected to be ready for Saturday.

LSU women’s basketball guards Flau’Jae Johnson and Mikaylah Williams earned preseason All-SEC honors as Johnson was named to the All-SEC First Team and Williams to the All-SEC Second Team. LSU women’s basketball was also picked to finish 3rd in the SEC behind South Carolina and Texas.

The Saints offense had multiple chances to win the game against New England on Sunday, but they came up short after a Juwan Johnson fumble and a turnover on downs on the last drive. Rattler says that New Orleans is better than its record shows and that the offense needs to do a better job of capitalizing on its opportunities.

Southeastern football made its 2025 debut in the AFCA FCS Coaches Poll at No. 22 this week. The Lions are 4 and 2 with recent wins over McNeese and Texas Rio Grande Valley.

The LSU men’s basketball team was predicted by media members to finish 15th in the SEC out of 16 teams. Last year, the Tigers finished 15th after only winning 3 conference games.
