Due to new federal rules, Louisiana is one of 12 states where a prescription is now required to get the latest COVID-19 vaccine. Senator Bill Cassidy says the new rules are counterproductive.

Today is the statistical peak of the hurricane season, and the National Hurricane Center is not expecting a storm to form over the next week. LSU Health Climatologist Barry Keim says there have been six named storms and just one hurricane.

The mayor of New Orleans will be arraigned in a federal courtroom this afternoon. Andrew Greenstein reports.

DWI arrests are up by four percent in Louisiana. Almost 14 thousand people were arrested last year. Mark Lambert with the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission says increased law enforcement is helping keep the roads safer.

A Slidell woman was arrested for an alleged hit and run that left her co-worker critically injured. Slidell police say surveillance shows 67-year-old Lillian Sellers backing up recklessly in the parking lot of Greenbriar Community Care Center Sunday night when she struck a female co-worker. She then exited her SUV, retrieved a broken piece of bumper and then walked in to work saying someone had fallen in the parking lot. When medical personnel determined the victim’s injuries were consistent with being struck by a vehicle, they notified police. When questioned, Sellers reportedly shrugged her shoulders and gave no explanation.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is being arraigned in federal court this afternoon on charges related to travel with her bodyguard at the city’s expense. Loyola University Law Professor Dane Ciolino says Cantrell’s trial will not start until after she leaves office, and he does not see any pre-trial hearings interfering with her remaining time in office.

The Florida Gators will travel to Baton Rouge desperately seeking a win after getting upset by South Florida. Head coach Billy Napier says he is embracing Saturday night’s challenge of going into Death Valley and trying to get a win.

Florida is entering a tough stretch of their schedule. After this game, the Gators will play fifth-ranked Miami, seventh-ranked Texas, and then visit 16th-ranked Texas A&M.

The 2026 LSU baseball schedule is out. The Tigers will not play Arkansas this season in the regular season. They open the conference slate by visiting Vanderbilt, and LSU will host Florida on the last weekend of the regular season.

The Ragin Cajuns head to Missouri this Saturday to take on the 25th-ranked Tigers. It’s the first meeting between the two teams. Cajuns starting quarterback Daniel Beale had a quiet game in the 34-10 victory over McNeese last Saturday, only throwing for 86 yards. Coach Michael Desormeaux says  Beale needs some help to be successful..

Louisiana Tech coach Sonny Cumbie says he has not named a starting quarterback for this week’s game versus New Mexico State. The Bulldogs played both quarterbacks, Trey Kukuk (Q-kuhk) and Blake Baker against LSU. Baker led Tech to its only touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Saints return to work today, as they get ready to host the 49ers, who will be without pro bowl tight end George Kittle because of a hamstring injury.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is being arraigned in federal court this afternoon. Prosecutors say she and retired NOPD officer Jeffrey Vappie (VAA-pee) cheated the city out of 70-thousand dollars for trips they took together under the premise that Vappie was providing security to Cantrell while the two were actually in a romantic relationship. Loyola Law Professor Dane Ciolino says Cantrell will plead not guilty.

In 2024, 261 people who were not wearing seat belts were killed in crashes, compared to 302 in 2023. Lambert stated that drivers can do all the things necessary to be safe drivers, but they cannot control what others do on the road, which is why he says wearing a seatbelt is so important.

DWI arrests also increased by four percent, with law enforcement officers arresting almost 14-thousand people last year. Lambert says that increased law enforcement is also helping keep the roads safer.

LSU freshman running back Harlem Berry had one of the best plays of the game as he evaded multiple tacklers to break off a 43-yard run late in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s win over Louisiana Tech. Head coach Brian Kelly says that Berry has put the staff on notice after starting to get used to the transition to college.

Florida football will come to Baton Rouge this Saturday with a limited margin for error, as another loss would just about end the Gators’ playoff hopes. Head coach Billy Napier says he is embracing going into Saturday’s matchup against LSU as the villain in a hostile environment.

Napier has a record of 20-and-20 through his first 40 games with the Gators. He’s aware of the criticism he is getting for losing, but he says that it is important that he and his staff respond to adversity.

UL-Lafayette will travel to Columbia this weekend to take on number 25 Missouri in a sold-out Memorial Stadium. Cajuns head coach Michael Desormeaux (DEZ-er-moe) says that his team does not need to worry about anything outside of football.

Louisiana’s U-S Senate race has the potential to be heated with Senator Bill Cassidy facing three formidable challengers in a primary election that will be held in April. Jeremy Alford with L-A Politics weekly says if the primary was held today, he would expect Cassidy to come out on top.

Cassidy is considered vulnerable because of his 2021 vote to impeach then-former President Donald Trump.

An NFIB survey finds optimism among small business owners continues to increase. NFIB state director Leah Long says the federation believes the tort reform legislation that seeks to reduce frivolous lawsuits will help business grow.

Over the weekend, someone stole a statue of Abraham Lincoln from an Ascension Parish historic antebellum estate, and the owner would really like it back. Kevin Kelly, who owns Houmas House and Gardens in Darrow, says what’s just as upsetting as the theft of the statue are some of the reactions people are leaving on the estate’s Facebook page.

Police in Slidell arrest a woman in connection with a hit-and-run in a parking lot that left a woman critically injured. Surveillance video shows an employee of a community care center walking across the parking lot when she was run over by an SUV that was recklessly going through the parking lot in reverse. The driver was identified as 67-year-old Lillian Sellers of Mandeville, who’s also employed by the care center. Police say when Sellers was questioned, she shrugged her shoulders and provided no explanation.

When starting center Braelin Moore was injured on the first play of the game versus Louisiana Tech, sophomore DJ Chester came into the game to replace him. Head coach Brian Kelly says the staff is comfortable with playing Chester if Moore cannot go this week.

The SEC has announced its conference schedule for the 2026 baseball season. LSU baseball will travel to Nashville to face Vanderbilt in the first week of SEC play before hosting Oklahoma in Baton Rouge. Other key opponents include Tennessee, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Georgia on the road. In addition to Oklahoma, LSU will host Kentucky, Texas A&M, South Carolina, and Florida. Former LSU head coach Paul Manieri will return to Baton Rouge for the first time since being the Gamecocks head coach on May 1st.

Saints tight end Juwan Johnson had the opportunity to tie the game in the final seconds against the Cardinals with a crucial drop in the endzone. Johnson says that even though New Orleans came up short, the team needs to prioritize its focus on the next game.

The Saints will take on the San Francisco 49ers in New Orleans on Sunday at noon. 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is questionable with a toe and shoulder injury, and star tight end George Kittle was placed on the injured reserve after injuring his hamstring against Seattle.

Solar manufacturer, First Solar Inc, is expected to begin operations at their new 1.1-billion-dollar plant in New Iberia soon and they’ve tapped St. Landry Parish Noble Plastics to supply components for the new facility.  Noble is investing 8.5 million dollars to expand their facility to meet the needs. Their expansion is expected to be completed by the end of 2026 and is expected to create 29 new direct jobs.

Houmas House and Gardens in Ascension Parish is missing a valuable statue of Abraham Lincoln. Sunday morning, owner, Kevin Kelly discovered that the 64-pound silver statue created by Gutzon Borglum who also carved the four U.S. Presidents into the side of Mount Rushmore was missing. Kelly says Lincoln stayed at Houmas House on more than one occasion.

A 15-year-old was arrested after an accidental shooting on Northwestern’s Campus left a victim seriously injured. Investigators say the juvenile was handling a firearm in a negligent way causing it to fire.  Natchitoches city and parish authorities along with Northwestern police responded Monday night and gave aid to the victim who was eventually airlifted to an Alexandria hospital and is now listed in stable condition. The juvenile is charged with illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile and negligent injuring.
